7 dead in Oak Creek temple shooting

Police said that seven people are dead in a shooting at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek Sunday morning.

Greenfield Police Chief Brad Wentland said four people were deceased inside and three people deceased outside the Sikh Temple, 7512 S. Howell Ave. That is located just south of Rawson Avenue.

The shooting took place around 10:20 a.m.

The shootings happened at about 10:00 a.m. at the Sikh Temple, on the 7500 block of South Howell Avenue in Oak Creek.

“An officer arrived on scene. He engaged an active shooter. The officer was shot multiple times. He has been transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive,” said Wentlandt. “The shooter was put down.”

Pictures from Chopper 4 showed at least four people who were shot, though Oak Creek Police did not confirm those reports.

One witness told Newsradio 620 WTMJ’s Dan O’Donnell that at least one, possibly four gunmen were hiding inside the temple after they started shooting.

From a story posted in "JSOnline"...."One of the temple's committee members, Ven Boba Ri, said that based on communication with people inside the temple, the shooter was a white male in his 30s.

This is a horrific crime, very sad for everyone involved, and also as we know, this will only fuel the fires of those who want to control guns, no matter what may be disclosed about the type of weapon involved in todays act.

Governor Walker statement on Oak Creek incident

MADISON - Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker released a statement Sunday regarding the fatal shooting in Oak Creek.

It reads: "While the situation in Oak Creek continues to develop rapidly, we are working with the FBI and local law enforcement. I became aware of the situation late this morning and continue to receive updated briefings.

"Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, as we all struggle to comprehend the evil that begets this terrible violence.

"At the same time, we are filled with gratitude for our first responders, who show bravery and selflessness as they put aside their own safety to protect our neighbors and friends.

"Tonette and I ask everyone to join us in praying for the victims and their families, praying for the safety of our law enforcement and first responder professionals and praying for strength and healing for this entire community and our state."

The gunman may have been a member of the Sikh community. There have been such incidents before, and most church shootings are by disaffected ex-members of the congregation. Similar in nature to family violence.
