In 2008, Harvard Law classmate...remembered Obama as ‘a pretty cold fish’ (audio at link)
The Daily Caller ^ | June 3, 2012 | Jeff Poor

Posted on 08/07/2012 12:14:55 AM PDT by beaversmom

While details from President Barack Obama’s college years are scant, with the exception of a few acquaintances’ recollections, in 2008 one of his Harvard Law classmates offered a few seldom-heard remembrances of the president’s time at Harvard.

Conservative commentator Carol Platt Liebau, author of “Prude: How the Sex-Obsessed Culture Damages Girls (and America, Too!),” guest hosted Hugh Hewitt’s February 22, 2008 radio show and described her relationship with Obama during her law school years. Despite his liberal slant, she said Obama was respectful of the conservative perspective when he was president of the Harvard Law Review.

“I knew him reasonably well — as well as most people knew him, if not better — because quite in contrast to this image that Barack tries to project, as someone who is warm and all-embracing and all that kind of stuff,” Liebau said.

“I mean, I will tell you I’ve written a piece that has praised Barack for certain things and I stand by that piece: He was color-blind in the way he chose, staffed the law review when he was president. He did give both sides a fair hearing. He always went with the far-left side, but he did give both sides a respectful hearing, which was fairly atypical at Harvard Law School at that time.”

The essay she referred to was published by Townhall.com in 2007. It described President Obama as a listener but “a liberal’s liberal.”

At the time of Liebau’s radio broadcast, Obama was being portrayed as a great unifier, which inspired bizarre reactions from the likes of MSNBC’s Chris Matthews. But Liebau said that was hardly the way he was viewed at Harvard.

“Quite in contrast to this all-embracing kind of ‘earth father’ image — this sort of messianic blaze of glory with which he’s deemed to envelope our television screens — he was a pretty cold fish,” she said.

“He was not a warm person. He was not the type of person that gave you a warm and fuzzy [feeling]. And you got the sense that he even wasn’t even terribly fixated or focused on what he was doing.”

Liebau also describe Obama as a guy “whose eyes were always looking over your shoulder to see if anyone more important is in the room” and that he was always looking for “bigger and better things.”

Her longest one-on-one communication with Obama, she said, came when she was managing editor of the Harvard Law Review.

“So I guess it caused a lot of rumbling that I didn’t know about, and so we were all impressed with a return visit by our retired president, the former president, Barack Obama, who took me out on the back steps of Gannett House, which is where the review was housed and wanted to have a little one-on-one with me,” she said.

Liebau said his advice started off sound, but ultimately came off as disappointing.

“He said, ‘Look, what do you care who does the work?’” Liebau recalled Obama saying in reference to her management of the law review. “’It is the same amount of work for you to hand out the work no matter who it goes to, so why fight it? Do what’s easiest for you. Give the work to the people who will do the work, and just don’t worry about the people who don’t want to pull their weight.’”

Liebau wasn’t impressed.

“I guess I was young and naïve: I was like, ‘Ah but that wouldn’t be fair,’” she said.

“And what surprised me is apparently that didn’t bother Barack at all. It was just kind of like — take the easy way out. Why bother yourself with all these silly notions about justice and fairness? Do what works. Revealing? I don’t know. Good advice? I didn’t particularly think so.”

Not to mention lazy. I know Obama enthralled the brain dead in 2008, but I've never been able to see him as a warm person. He comes across as reptilian to me. Apologizes to all the reptile fans out there.

"Why bother yourself with all these silly notions about justice and fairness?"

Typical socialist thinking and Obama still operates with this warped set of values.

The "President" of the Harvard Law Review is an elected position - based on popularity, not intelligence. If Obama is described as a "cold fish," than I can't imagine him being the most popular guy on campus. How was he elected President?

Was this a situation were "it's not the votes that matter, but who counts the votes?" I wouldn't be surprised if he was appointed President by the faculty, just so that they can claim a "First..."

I’m not sure how it works, but I thought I saw someone discussing it on another thread. I’ll look for it.

Found it: See Post #86

Obama’s College Classmate: The Obama Scandal is at Columbia
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2915390/replies?c=86

From SmokeyBlue:

I don’t have time to look it up but I seem to remember reading that there were 19 candidates and that the vote went well into the night. There was a tie between two other candidates (not Obama) so as a compromise they went with Obama (affirmative action - give away).

The two top candidates got screwed.

Here are two other articles:

Ever Wonder How Obama Became President of the Harvard Law Review?

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2600176/posts

Until the 1970’s the editors were picked on the basis of grades, and the president of the Law Review was the student with the highest academic rank. (snip) That system came under attack in the 1970’s and was replaced by a program in which about half the editors are chosen for their grades and the other half are chosen by fellow students after a special writing competition . The new system, disputed when it began, was meant to help insure that minority students became editors of The Law Review.

Law Review Debates Affirmative Action Policy

http://www.thecrimson.com/article/2006/6/5/law-review-debates-affirmative-action-policy/

Prior to 1981, law students could join the Review either by being among the top five students in their first-year sections—each class used to be divided into four sections—or through a combination of their grades and their scores on an annual writing competition, a process designed to preserve absolute objectivity.

But the 1981 editors felt it necessary for their admission policy to take into account the underrepresentation of minorities and women.

Under their modified plan, the top four students in each first-year section would still be elected to the Review, but the fifth spot would be reserved for the top-scoring minority student among the top 25, and if no such minority student existed, the fifth spot would go to the woman with the highest grades.

Two days after the adoption of this policy, three editors—including one woman—resigned in protest.

In response, the Review’s leadership convened to reconsider their plan, opting for a non-quota system that would merely take race and gender into consideration. But despite the modification, the Review continued to encounter opposition from students, alumni, and most importantly, from the faculty.

“The second time I went out to California to attend Mohammad Hassan Chandoo’s graduation from Occidental College, Obama was enjoying the lavish lifestyle being financed by his friend and roommate at the time - Hassan Chandoo. The wealthy patron provided Obama access to big houses, lavish parties & had him dressed in the slickest clothes. I could have sworn they were both Gay & wealthy.”

Those were some of the initial observations by Dr. John C. Drew, PhD, on his second encounter with Barack Obama who was attending Occidental College at the time. ..."

Obama Espoused Radical Views in College [advocated communist revolution]
Steve Malzberg - WOR News Talk Radio 710 ^ | February 12, 2010 | Ronald Kessler

Dr. John C. Drew, a grant writing consultant in Laguna Niguel, Calif., tells Newsmax he met Obama in 1980 when Obama was a sophomore at Occidental College in Los Angeles. Drew had just graduated from Occidental and was attending graduate school at Cornell University.

During Christmas break, Drew says he was at Grauman-Boss’ home in Palo Alto when Obama came over with Mohammed Hasan Chandoo, his roommate from Pakistan.

“Barack [Obama] and Hasan showed up at the house in a BMW, and then we went to a restaurant together,” Drew says. “We had a nice meal, and then we came back to the house and smoked cigarettes and drank and argued politics.”

For the next several hours, they discussed Marxism.

He [Obama] was arguing a straightforward Marxist-Leninist class-struggle point of view, which anticipated that there would be a revolution of the working class, led by revolutionaries, who would overthrow the capitalist system and institute a new socialist government that would redistribute the wealth,” says Drew, who says he himself was then a Marxist.

The idea was basically that wealthy people were exploiting others,” Drew says. “That this was the secret of their wealth, that they weren’t paying others enough for their work, and they were using and taking advantage of other people. He was convinced that a revolution would take place, and it would be a good thing.”

Drew concluded that Obama thought of himself as “part of an intelligent, radical vanguard that was leading the way towards this revolution and towards this new society.” ..."

Referring to Obama’s quote from “Dreams of My Father” that he associated with Marxist professors, Drew says, “What he’s not saying is that he was in 100 percent total agreement with those Marxist professors. When you understand that, Obama’s later associations and policies make more sense, including why he was taken in by Rev. Wright’s ideology.”

I haven't. But based on a recent radio interview with the film maker that I caught a part of, I suspect its weak. The guy went on and on about Obama but didn't mention once that he/Obama was a Marxist. Maybe I came in too late and missed that part?

I’m not familiar with D’Souza’s entire premise, but from what I understand Obama was/is influenced by his phantom father’s hate of colonialism and is motivated by that and is pursuing that dream of his father. I’m sure it’s more complicated than what I’m describing. I believe that Obama was much more influenced by the radicals that were actually around him including his grandparents and mother.

I did find this about the movie:

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/dinesh-dsouzas-anti-obama-documentary-opens-strong-at-the-box-office-over-the-weekend/

The documentary, based on Dinesh D‘Souza’s book “The Roots of Obama’s Rage,” features an interview with President Obama’s impoverished half-brother, George Obama, and sheds light on the president’s relationship with his avowed communist mentor Frank Marshall Davis.

From David Horowitz's FrontPageMag.com/DiscoverTheNetworks.org:
Profile: Khalid Abdullah Tariq al-Mansour

"Khalid Abdullah Tariq al-Mansour is a Muslim lawyer and a black nationalist who made news in 2008 when it was revealed that he had been a patron of Barack Obama and had recommended the latter for admission to Harvard Law School in 1988.

Before becoming a Muslim, al-Mansour in the 1960s was named Don Warden. He was deeply involved in San Francisco Bay Area racial politics as founder of a group called the African American Association. A close personal adviser to Huey Newton and Bobby Seale, al-Mansour helped the pair establish the Black Panther Party but later broke with them when they entered coalitions with white radical groups."
...

Al-Mansour is an outspoken hater of the United States, Israel, and white people generally. In recent years he has accused the U.S. of plotting a “genocide” designed “to remove 15 million black people, considered disposable, of no relevance, value or benefit to the American society.” He has told fellow blacks that “whatever you do to [white people], they deserve it, God wants you to do it and that’s when you cut out the nose, cut out the ears, take flesh out of their body, don’t worry because God wants you to do it.” Alleging further that Palestinians in Israel “are being brutalized like savages,” he accuses the Jews of “stealing the land the same way the Christians stole the land from the Indians in America.”

He did give both sides a fair hearing. He always went with the far-left side, but he did give both sides a respectful hearing, which was fairly atypical at Harvard Law School at that time.

Of course he did because he's a gentle soul. Just like the respect he accorded Paul Ryan at the Health Care "summit."
