A picket line could soon become the newest attraction at San Francisco's two fine arts museums if a contract dispute between some museum employees and management continues.
Workers in the union that represents about 90 employees of the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum in Golden Gate Park and the Legion of Honor Museum in Lincoln Park completed voting last week to authorize their two-person bargaining team to call a strike if talks fail.
"We do not want to go on strike, but we will be forced to if management refuses to work with us," said Larry Bradshaw, vice president of SEIU Local 1021 in a statement.
The museum employs about 500 public and private workers.
.......Management executives have said that they are not proposing wage cuts for anyone and want museum workers to pay a portion of their health care insurance premiums like city workers. They also dispute the union's characterization of their finances - a spokesman said the museums "barely broke even last year."
....."It's unfortunate that the union's leadership has taken this step in light of what the museum considers an extremely fair and generous contract offer," said Garcia in a statement. "We think it's fairly remarkable that this union, or for that matter, any union, would choose to walk away from a double-digit pay raise offer in these harsh and difficult economic times."

Art museums! Clearly something government should not be involved in. Fire them all. Dispose of the assets. Its a win all the way around.
Art museum? Close and lock. Fire the entire “work” force. Leave the phone off-hook. Lease out the building to a real productive/profitable business that can pay in some taxes.
Is this good news, or bad news?
Those museums are vicious slavemasters who exploit the workers, expose them to dangerous working conditions and violent management practices, employ forced child labor, discriminate against people of color and operate illegal sweatshops, all in service of generating obscene profits for their capitalist bankster one-percenter owners.
Outrageous labor practices like the ones employed by these museums are the reason why unions were organized in the first place. Comrades, we must show solidarity in the face of this cruel oppression. No justice, no peace.
They are being offered a double-digit pay raise and want to strike? Really? Eliminate their positions and find folks who will work for less, or just close it down.
Fire the whole bunch and bring in scabs.
There are lenty of people in San Francsco wh will be glad to get those jobs.
Unions are a waste of money ask Nancy Pelosi, she doesn’t hire Union workers in her hotels.
Does anyone else think a staff of 500 for a freaking art museum reeks of featherbedding already? Imagine what it will look like once the union gets its hooks in!
