Old Friends Say Drugs Played Bit Part in Obama’s Young Life (2/9/2008. Lots of illegal drugs)
ny times ^ | 2/9/2008 | SERGE F. KOVALESKI

Nearly three decades ago, Barack Obama stood out on the small campus of Occidental College in Los Angeles for his eloquence, intellect and activism against apartheid in South Africa. But Mr. Obama, then known as Barry, also joined in the party scene.

Years later in his 1995 memoir, he mentioned smoking “reefer” in “the dorm room of some brother” and talked about “getting high.” Before Occidental, he indulged in marijuana, alcohol and sometimes cocaine as a high school student in Hawaii, according to the book. He made “some bad decisions” as a teenager involving drugs and drinking, Senator Obama, now a presidential candidate, told high school students in New Hampshire last November.

Mr. Obama’s admissions are rare for a politician (his book, “Dreams From My Father,” was written before he ran for office.) They briefly became a campaign issue in December when an adviser to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Mr. Obama’s chief Democratic rival, suggested that his history with drugs would make him vulnerable to Republican attacks if he became his party’s nominee.

Mr. Obama, of Illinois, has never quantified his illicit drug use or provided many details. He wrote about his two years at Occidental, a predominantly white liberal arts college, as a gradual but profound awakening from a slumber of indifference that gave rise to his activism there and his fears that drugs could lead him to addiction or apathy, as they had for many other black men.

Great article from 2008 on Obummer’s lost years. Wayne Allen Root might be on to something big.

Obama transferred hating himself into hating America and became the image of God in his own mind.

Years ago, such an admission of drug use would have been an impediment to many jobs, especially security-related jobs. It appears that any dregs of society can aspire to be President. I’d say that office has been cheapened considerably.

I believe very little about this guy good or bad.

He’s a total fabrications from the word go.

Look at his name for example. Barry Soweto. This guy doesn’t even go with his original name. What would he not change, if he’s willing to change that?

Generally, when we think of people changing their name, we think of someone in trouble with the law, or someone trying to run from a history. Either way, it’s not all that good is it.

He’s a flake. He was a blank slate and the Left built upon what was already there, to create a Frankensteinian fabrication. Okay, that’s stretching it. One step removed, and it’s right on target.

Obama sends Reid out there to make baseless allegations against Romney based on an “anonymous” source but in this case there's no need for anonymous sources since Obama and his friends admit they committed criminal acts.

Amazing. Everyone they talked to had great things to say about him. Unnatural, in fact.

3 years of getting high = over 1000 days.

Buying illegal Schedule 1 narcotics is a felony.

SO .... if Obama bought every illegal drugs every day, then he’s committed 1000 drug felonies

... if he bought every 2 days, that’s still at least 500 felonies he’s committed

... if every 3 days, over 300 felonies ....

AND THIS GUY’S CAMPAIGN wants to paint Romney as a criminal??

This is the NYT’s attempt to inoculate Obama against druggie charges. Since McCain did not have the cojones to do it, they're afraid that Romney will. Then they can say “old news” and refuse to cover it.

I’m surprised somebody found people who knew Zero and would talk about him. Now can we hear from some people who knew him at Columbia and Harvard?

Obama himself said

"I spent the last two years of high school in a daze, locking away the questions that life seemed insistent on imposing. I kept playing basketball, attended classed sparingly, drank beer heavily, and tried drugs enthusiastically. I discovered that it didn't make any difference if you smoked reefer in the white class mates sparkling new van, or in the dorm room with some brother you'd met down at the gym, or on the beach with a couple of Hawaiian kids who had dropped out of school and now spent most of their time looking for an excuse to brawl."

Maraniss recently exposed how Obama got heavily into the "choom" gang.

Obama's past is gearing up to be an issue this time around.

This article looks like a pre-emptive CYA attempt to me.

NYT to the rescue.

Was it that good? I wasn’t listening. ;^)

I remember at the time them talking about how bright he was and that he was their go to guy over the horizon.

I remember thinking..., that’s a very large mount of fertilizer at this stage in the game.

Interesting. The WSJ piece says “Others speculate about ties to the Black Students Organization, though students active then don’t seem to remember him.”

Contrast this to the NYT: “Mr. Obama was involved in the Black Students’ Association and in the divestment campaign to pressure the college to pull its money out of companies doing business in South Africa. To make a point, students camped out in makeshift shantytowns on campus.

In his book, Mr. Obama said that his role in the divestment push started as kind of a lark, “part of the radical pose my friends and I sought to maintain.” But then he became more engaged, contacting members of the African National Congress to have them speak at the college and writing letters to the faculty.

He was one of a few students who spoke at a campus divestment rally.”

How could student leaders of BSA not remember one of the few students to speak at the divestment rally? One of these accounts appears to be in error.
