U.S. Rep. Todd Akin of Wildwood is leading in the hard-fought battle of conservatives for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, according to early statewide returns.

With 515 of the state's 3,428 precints reporting, Akin has 32,050 votes, or 34 percent; followed by 29,675 for former state treasurer Sarah Steelman of Rolla, at 31 percent; and 28,463 for businessman John G. Brunner of Frontenac with 28,463 votes, or 30 percent.

Five other candidates trail far behind. There will be much more to count as the night goes on.

The winner will face Sen. Claire McCaskill, who is seeking re-election to a second term.

The primary is a cliffhanger, with Todd Akin holding a slight edge for now. It all depends on who turned out the vote and which parts of the state haven’t reported yet.

I like Todd Akin. My husband and I split our votes..one for Steelman and one for Akin. Now, on to beat the witch McCaskill!

This election, at the state level, Republicans are having the weird challenge of a lot of races that are conservative vs. conservative, and sometimes vs. conservative.

With 40% of the precincts in, it’s still a cliffhanger, with Todd Akin clinging to a very narrow lead.

Akin, Todd GOP 84,274 34%

Palin endorsed Steelman.

Was there an official Tea Party Express endorsement for any of the candidates?

We must be more cynical here in Swampeast Mo. Her ad against Akin was better than any he could have ran for himself! Most of us decided the Dems think they can beat Aiken and were really trying to get him over the top! lol! Hope we’re wrong, oh, how I hope we’re wrong!
