Skip to comments. The Romney campaign’s big health care blunder

Last week, I got into a debate with David Frum over his post arguing that Mitt Romney should use his Massachusetts health care law to counter charges that hes unsympathetic to the middle class. Well now have a chance to see how that strategy plays out, as it appears as if the Romney campaign has decided to take Frums advice. Andrea Sauls response here creates a huge opening for defenders of the national health care law.
It isnt too hard for the Obama campaign and his liberal allies to use Sauls comments in defense of Obamacare. The essential argument is: the Romney campaign acknowledges that people in Massachusetts dont have to worry about losing their health care if theyre unemployed because of a law that includes a mandate, Medicaid expansion and subsidies, and Obama wants to make sure the rest of the country enjoys those same benefits, while Romney wants to repeal the health care law. It didnt take long for the Washington Posts Sarah Kliff to write a post entitled, Romneycare would cover an unemployed cancer patient. Obamacare will too. And as Talking Points Memos Benjy Sarlin notes, this isnt a one off statement by Saul. Romney himself has increasingly been touting his health care law on the stump.
Its hard to say what type of political ramifications this specific development will have, but I do think its an example of a broader problem. Romney consistently attempts to make up with tactics what he lacks in vision. Romneys campaign isnt driven by any core ideology or governing philosophy, but by responding to news cycles.

It was the danger we all knew about.
Romneycare, the big stinking pile in the middle of the room... and we know who put it there, too.
Anyone who thinks Mittens is going to get rid of Obamneycare is smoking some medical maryjane.
“Andrea Sauls response”
That does give Mitt a chance to clarify things if he wants.
POTENTIAL ROMNEY VOTERS...
So those are the RomneyBots who have been beating me up in these threads...
For all practical intents and purposes: yes. ;)
"It's a feel-good story, this Romney thing.
Romney is an ascendant guy."
Sen. John Kerry (D) to Don Imus on RomneyCARE:
"I like this health care bill".
Sen. Hillary Clinton (D) on RomneyCARE:
"To come up with a bipartisan plan in this polarized environment is commendable."
“Staying Home for 2012: Try Again In 2016”.
That is my election motto.
If there is such a thing as the perfect post . yours is it.
It’s not Obama who needs to go, first, it’s the GOP elite.
Staying Home for 2012: Try Again In 2016.
Count me in
It is so obvious if you just look at this campaign and what it is that they say and do. They respond to a lying attack about a woman who died of cancer and whose memory is being whored out for politics, by touting the same communist styled healthcare program as a solution to obama’s lying claim. They are ALL progressives... anyone in the inner circle is... and they only know and believe in what we see them promote. I will leave it to all of you to make your minds up as to which school of political existence that romney and his campaign handlers belong to.
From that picture, I don’t know how effective Mitt would be. I can see quite a few black people. When it comes to the gay agenda, blacks are way too conservative for Mitt to convert.
