Romney spokesman on steelworker ad: In Massachusetts, he would have been covered under RomneyCare
Hotair ^ | 08/08/2012 | AllahPundit

Via Mediaite, the key bit comes at 1:25. Are we sufficiently close to the election yet that we’re obliged to give Team Mitt a pass on this purely in the interest of defeating Obama, or is there still time left to wrist-slap him for touting a deeply problematic statist health-care expansion? (It's not just his spokesman who alluded to RomneyCare this morning but, according to Reuters, Romney himself.) If the answer is the former then I'm not optimistic about holding his feet to the fire from the right once he's elected. The Democrats have formidable challengers lined up for 2016 in Hillary and Andrew Cuomo, if they're willing. You don't really want to weaken President Mitt by criticizing him for moving to the center when he's facing a brutal struggle for reelection, do you?

It's not a big deal in the full context of the campaign but, like Erick Erickson says, any hint of backsliding by Romney is noteworthy:

[T]he Romney campaign decided to sabotage itself with a mind numbingly bit of spin that may mark the day the Romney campaign died…

Conservatives have put aside their distrust of Romney on this issue in the name of beating Barack Obama. They thought he and his campaign team had gotten the message and the hints. Consider the scab picked, the wound opened, and the distrust trickling out again.

About the only thing more stupid in terms of building bridges with the right would be to say something nice about fetal stem cell research.

Start your watches for that one!

If I were an Obama advisor, I’d be looking at Saul’s comment as an escape hatch from the rolling clusterfark that is the steelworker ad. It’s a twofer. On the one hand, it lets them grind Romney’s face in the one policy “accomplishment” more than any other that irritates his base, and on the other, it gives them an excuse to tout ObamaCare as a solution to situations like Soptic’s. I’d be surprised if O’s Super PAC isn’t working up a new ad about it already, assuming they’re not backlogged with spots accusing Romney of causing cancer or whatever.

Exit quotation from stalwart RomneyCare skeptic Philip Klein, trying to imagine future Romney talking points in this vein: “Well, in Massachusetts, the rich pay a lot of taxes.”

Update: More from Klein:

It’s hard to say what type of political ramifications this specific development will have, but I do think it’s an example of a broader problem. Romney consistently attempts to make up with tactics what he lacks in vision. Romney’s campaign isn’t driven by any core ideology or governing philosophy, but by responding to news cycles. It is a campaign that was perhaps best summed up by senior advisor Eric Fehrnstrom, when he proudly tweeted yesterday, “On Fox just now Romney was asked to respond to ‘RomneyHood’ charge and called it ‘Obamaloney.’” Conservatives, rest assured – Romney will not allow himself to be called a childish nickname without responding by calling Obama a childish nickname.

Last month, here in Germany, my doctor sent me for an operation on my back. That doctor claimed it to be “beauty surgery” and said I had to pay for it. She said because it is “beauty surgery” I had to wait 24 hours to think about it. Then she offered that she “could do it anyway” but wasn’t really in the mood because she already did a couple of surgeries so I ended up having to go back in a couple weeks from now and pay for it.

I told my wife that I went to the doctor and got sent for “beauty surgery”. How pathetic is that!??

Next year I am going to get a really cool full back tattoo to smooth over this indignity. That’s “beauty surgery”!

Last winter I had an emergency. My doctor sent me to be measured for a stomach bandage. They said the law was changed last year and I had to pay half.

My wife is as close to legally blind as a person can get but has to pay most of the cost for glasses.

When the government has control they can rewrite the rules and you will pay. You will pay.

Socialized healthcare is starting to bankrupt me.

My 90 year old mother-in-law is fighting to keep her home visits going. That is another story. Who needs to fight for a thing like that at age 90?

When they have power to terrorize you in old age - they will!

Ann, like the liberal wing of FR, needs to just close her mouth, sit silently and accept the consequences of supporting the man who gave every indication and in fact has made the statement that he will govern ‘Progressively’.

They support this. They are campaigning for this. Ergo they want this.

So they got this.

And they should be reminded of it now and for the rest of their natural lives. Because they deserve every liberal proclimation, law, regulation et all. When America’s chips were down, they trashed actual conservative candidates who were against this insanity. To this day, on this very thread, they trash anyone speaking against Romney’s liberalism because they are scared of Obama.

This ABOs is yet another crystal clear example of your fright-filled folly. And be PROUD. Because it’s only going to get worse once he officially gets the nomination and the MSM unloads with both barrels.

^ THIS ^ 1,000,000,000x this.

If the Romney haters on this and on other FR threads were/are so brilliant and competent - Why have they not run for office and given the gift of their wonderfulness to America?

You Mitt Supporters keep saying this falsehood over and over again as if by the more you say it, the more it becomes true.

Sadly, you are completely mistaken.

We don't hate Mitt, however, we do hate his progressive liberalism.

His record is chock-full of PRogressive Liberal actions like the following. This is what we hate:

All we care about is the truth where Romney is concerned, All you Mitt supporters care about is burying the truth where Mitt is concerned.

Every since Jim called the truce.....the Romney “sunshine pumpers” have been out in force on FR making it like its Peace & Safety with everything being in the hands of Romney, when it’s not

I think it’s abundantly clear to everyone that the truce with the ABO brigade had the same outcome as all the go along get along crap the GOP uses with the Dems. The ABOers have proceeded to slap JR and FR in the face daily, along with those of us allergic to kool aid. It is a mistake for the GOP and IMO, was a mistake here. But that is my opinion. Not my site to control.

All we can do now is point and laugh at the folly of the ABOers defending the liberal activities of their liberal candidate, while calling his and their actions ‘conservative’ and claiming it’s going to save the country.

The ABOers pretty much have to ride their horse to the finishline. If they admit their mistake now, they would have to likewise admit that us ‘Obama supporters’ were right to begin with. And not one of them has thusfar displayed the integrity to do that. So expect more ranting and raving on how evil/bad/stupid/crazy we are and how we who have both campaigned and supported the conservative position will be the downfall of America.

As a side note, I wish I could see the books when history is written about this situation. It will not speak well for the the wholly illogical ‘Anyone but’ philosophy.

Because if ‘anybody’ was acceptable, we should run Hillary! for a 100% guaranteed win. After all, she’s not Obama. And if the ABOs don’t agree with that they cannot by definition be ‘ABO’. So they are in truth Pro Liberal Romney.

My biggest complaint with the stunning intellectual dishonesty of the ABO brigade is their persistent mewling and barking that: "Well, it's okay if Mitt's really a hardcore liberal on virtually every last social issues known to man, because Congress will absolutely, positively hold his darned feet to the fire, by God and by damn!"

This, of course, is nothing more than reconstituted horse crap, and everyone with an I.Q. higher than their resting pulse rate knows it. As Erick Erickson pointed out, earlier today:

"[...]we’ve seen this play out before. Once George Bush was elected, we had to keep the fragile coalition together. Then it was the war. Then it was re-election. We got to TARP and the GM bailout and people were still yelling that we could not criticize the Bush Administration lest we help Barack Obama.

"These supporters are enablers of the $16 trillion debt we presently have. If we cannot vocally and forcefully hold Mitt Romney accountable now, there will be a new excuse after the election for why we cannot hold him accountable, just as there always has been up to $16 trillion."

Republicans in Congress never, ever, EVER hold the feet of their party's President "to the fire" on ANY issue of importance to movement conservatives. We have eight years of GWB, amply serving an inarguable demonstration of that.

They lie.

Unhesitatingly, and directly to your face: they lie.

Oh, gee, WHAT A SHOCK. ROMNEY DEFENDS SOCIALIZED MEDICINE.

I hope all you people who are saying that we must vote for Romney to defeat Obama at any cost are reading this! Your guy, Romney, is exactly the same as Obama.

The Government Party pushing hard to condition Americans to Extortion-Care, with any contrived "controversy" they can. As I mentioned on another thread, right out of the movie theme “Oscar”, in attempt to garner sympathy in attempt the conditioning to normalize Extortion-Care.

For me, the bottom line with the ABOers is simple. In real life, if a person we knew called themselves a devout christian and spent every weekend coked up at the strip joint, we would likely distance ourselves from that person.

If we knew someone who led the local scout troop, volunteered at the old folks home and cooked at soup kitchens for the homeless... then spent their time online at Stormfront railing on Blacks and Jews, we would likely distance ourselves from that person, if not end ties permanently.

Why? Because they put on (Bill) airs of being one thing, when their actions prove to be something else entirely.

When an ABOer comes on here/other sites claiming how mouch they love/fear for America and then go and actively campaign for a man who represents by his very record, the polar opposite of everything that person claims to believe, they are either lying about what they believe or they are intentionally showing by their actions that their beliefs meant nothing to them.

There is no other option. They can bitch and scream till the cows come home, but it’’s reality. And it is also reality that such people are the reason the left has and maintains power. Because rather than standing for what is right, they capitulate everything.

So IMO, there is no ‘America’ for them to fight for. By their actions, they gave up on America with thir support for a man whose actions stand against what ‘America’ itself stands for.

Such people disgust me with false patriotism. Because I defy one of them to attempt to define abortion/homosexual marriage/homo-military/mandates/gun control et all as ‘patriotic’.

They may as well be coked up in the strip joint on Saturday night and preaching mass Sunday morning. Same BS, different BSer.

Pretty much. I’d like one of them to explain how the DU/OWS types carrying the water for the Dems when they KNOW the Dems will screw them, are being ‘Useful idiots’; but the ABOers carrying GOP water KNOWING the GOP will cast them aside as soon as they get their lib elected...as they have a 100% record of doing, is somehow ‘not’ being a ‘Useful Idiot’.

If the ABOs set aside their fear of Obama for a couple solid hours and REALLY thought about this, I think a few would see the error in their ‘logic’.

The rest are demonstrably too stupid for anyone to help. All one need do is look at the verbage in their attacks on conservatives to see that in crystal clarity.

His political ‘brain trust’ comes from Massachusetts politics: they have no understanding of American political sentiment nationwide and particularly misunderstand independent voters in swing states. Yet, they are confident that because they are from MA they understand moderate and independent voters better than anyone else.

Applying a Massachusetts political mentality nationwide is a certain losing approach.

(And as to Saul, what are they doing with a 30yo twit as their spokesperson for a presidential candidate anyway?)

There are people afflicted with cancer and neurologic diseases
that cannot even see primary care physicians quickly
now in Massachusetts.

All because of Mr. RomneyCARE (who then fled the state).

Did anyone else see the violent reaction by Ann Coulter tonight on Hannity? She was LIVID about Saul (that young twit campaign spokeswoman for Romney) and said she will NOT work hard for Romney in any way shape or form if he continues to surround himself with TOTAL MORONS like Saul

Ann Coulter was totally and irationally in the tank for Romney during the primaries and just NOW she is surprised that junk like this emerges? Sorry, Annie - you wanted this, now we all have to deal with it.

"Moderate" Republicans are nothing more, ultimately, than smarmily disingenuous liberals who enjoy the occasional tax cut. ;)
