SINGER ISLAND, Fla. -
Eighteen Cuban refugees came ashore on Singer Island early Wednesday morning.
Sixteen men and two women packed into a homemade, 21-foot fishing boat Friday and made the five-day trip from Cuba, officials told WPBF 25 News' Chris McGrath.
"They risked it all," U.S. Border Patrol spokesman Frank Miller said. "They risked their life."
Miller said the group endured rough conditions as a result of Hurricane Ernesto swirling in the Caribbean Sea.
"It could have turned out very badly for these people," Miller said.
Miller added that the boat had taken on water and was leaking fuel.

Welcome to America. Here’s your voter registration...........
Quick! Get them on Welfare!!
You beat me to it!
Why would anyone want to risk life and limb on an unseaworthy craft and break the law to come to the US... this ‘racist sh^% hole’ where minorities are so ‘ill treated’!!!??? (sarc)
Just WHERE was the coast Guard and why were they able to reach land? More Obama orders?
Just what jobs did they come here for? Well, it is hard work standing in the welfare line. S/
Hand made maybe. It had an inboard motor and seemed to have reasonable lines.
break the law to come to the US
I thought Cuba was one place that you didn’t break the law coming here. Once you plant one foot on the ground you are a citizen. Is that not true?
Who would want to leave a place where they have free healthcare?
” I cannot believe that anyone in their right mind would leave that socialist nirvana for a capitalist pig dog country!!”
After a few days under obama, they’ll turn around and go back.
Big difference between Cubans and Mexicans coming to America.
While the latter are mostly content to avail themselves of every government handout they can get, the former have a deep seated cultural respect for all those ideals conservatives hold near and dear.
My guess is you’ll soon see them attending Tea Party events and supporting Rubio (and maybe Romney)...
Why wouldn’t the U.S. immigration laws apply to Cuba as well as any other country?
I use the word ‘laws’ loosley.
I don’t know if they get a pass or not. I never heard of that.
I find it hard to believe you don’t know that. It’s common knowledge that Cuban escapees get refugee status once they touch US soil. You were kidding, right?
No-I didnt know that. I thought immigration policy was uniform across the board.
They don’t stand in line when its a mouse click away.
The dry feet policy (if they make it to shore, they're allowed in) is a cold war legacy.
We can send refugees back to third world shitholes, but not back to the hemisphere's premiere Soviet sphere nation.
“”They risked it all,” U.S. Border Patrol spokesman Frank Miller said. “They risked their life.”
I can understand the need to leave Cuba but we should have the right to require legal entry into this country less we become exactly like the country you left behind.
I loath government workers and elected officials who turn their backs on the brilliance of the founders everyday. They all deserve the very worse things in life.
To the very few in government service who are not part of this communist assimilation, PLEASE start blowing your whistles as loud as you can and expose anything and everything you can find.
If you keep silent, if it is not already too late, it will be shortly.
No. There are exceptions, as well as preferences. The immigration bill sponsored by Ted Kennedy in 1965, for example, de-prioritized European immigration in favor of immigrants from Middle Eastern, Asian, and African immigrants. You have better odds of getting in the US as a Pakistani jihadi than you do if you’re a British accountant, as I understand it.
