Lawyers for James Holmes just stated in open court -- they believe their client suffers from a mental illness ... and they need more time to figure out what's wrong with him before entering a plea.
Holmes' attorneys made the announcement during a hearing today, in which several news outlets had assembled to argue that the judge in the case should unseal court documents that could reveal important details about the July shooting in Aurora, CO.
Both the prosecution and the defense wish to keep the documents under wraps while the case is pending.
While everyone was in court, Holmes' attorney also appealed to the judge on an unrelated note -- demanding prosecutors and investigators turn over ALL documents related to the case ... in order to help the defense team determine just how crazy their client is.
The lawyer said, "We cannot begin to assess the nature and the depth of Mr. Holmes' mental illness until we receive full disclosure of all the documents."
It's the first mention of Holmes' intent to pursue an insanity defense.

Holmes is an adult. I don't believe his father is obligated to pay for his defense.
The law only looks at his own financial situation. His family isn't responsible for his crimes or defending him.
I’d say he’s effectively laid the groundwork for an insanity plea.

If your son could have been experimented on at the University AND was not seen shooting with a gun in his hand but only seen at the car..and you had the means at your disposal..would you leave him to a public defender?
A woman came into the court today saying she had important information and she had a computer...she was escorted out.
True, and the best Holmes can hope for is an insanity plea. There's no point in shoveling cash at lawyers at this point.
So? Kill him anyway.
There was a time during the early hearings where they described his conduct in the courtroom: eye-rolling, opening his eyes wide, staring blankly... Then I remembered videos of Terry Shiavo who did those same things (she couldn’t help herself).
I wondered if he wasn’t either mugging in some way to show contempt or establishing a pattern of behavior that might lead to an insanity plea.
I am fairly certain that this guy would best serve our nation as a shark's dinner at the local aquarium or zoo.
but study him. That way we can find out what makes him tick or what doesn't make his brain tick properly.
After we are done, 
he should be free to go.
Did I mention that as part of studying his brain 
we should physically extract it.
When we release him we can hand him his own brain and he can put it back in himself.
The problem with him is he's still alive. I have a 22-caliber prescription that should cure him. It has to be taken intra-cranially.
And in the legal sense, there's no way this skidmark is insane. He knew full well that what he was doing was wrong.
Not true. No one can identify him inside the theater. At least what we know so far.
Why all the secrecy???

I don’t know the purpose for the mental experimentation on the Unabomber by someone who had worked with the CIA ...but it created a mass murderer.

They probably know he is nuts and are staying as far away as possible from it lest they be implicated somehow and out of family embarrassment.

I’m guessing this is going to be the first in a series of lone white crazed gunmen shootings.
There’s no a whole lot about this case that makes much sense. The way he surrendered just doesn’t seem to square with a diabolical killer. It’s as if he just became a zombie immediately after his supposed shooting spree.
I don’t think this is an act, this guy has been seriously messed with. The switch has been turned off.
No, the blood of the victims should demand the truth of what happened. It should demand to know just who was doing the shooting and was more than one person involved.
It should not be satisfied with a quick execution of an obvious target for wrath.
A top notch attorney should not be pleading insanity before he has even seen all the evidence. Their guy might not have even been the shooter.
So why is the famous father leaving his adopted son to public defenders.
