Summit County sheriff worried about surge in CCW permits
News Channel 5 ^ | 9 Aug 2012 | Bob Jones

AKRON, Ohio - Summit County Sheriff Drew Alexander said he's concerned about a surge in the number of residents applying for a carrying concealed weapon permit.

"I think you have to understand in today's society, we don't know who is carrying weapons out there," Alexander said.

In 2011, the Summit County Sheriff's department issued 1,252 CCW permits. That number will easily be surpassed this year. The department has issued 1,168 permits through July and 93 more applications were submitted in the first nine days of August.

"The recent shootings in Colorado and Wisconsin obviously are having some effect," Alexander said.

Alexander said he supports the 2nd amendment, the right to bear arms, but is bothered that Ohio's CCW law only calls for 10 hours of firearms training in a classroom and an additional two hours of experience shooting at a range.

He would like to see those hours increased and more thorough background checks conducted.

"The average citizen that' getting their CCW license out there doesn't have the firearms training that a lot of NRA members and law enforcement officers have," Alexander said.

The Dayton Daily News reported that the state's sheriffs issued 18,823 CCW permits in the first three months of 2012. That's about a 40 percent increase from the same period two years ago.

Shove it Alexander. The 12 hour class is way more than most states require. A man shouldn't have to pay $200 and lose a day of work just to exercise a right. Furthermore, there's no evidence to support the claim that the 12 hour class is insufficient. Making it more difficult will also make it more difficult to enter into reciprocity agreements with other states, Pennsylvania specifically. We need to be working with PA to develop a reciprocity agreement, not working to make it more difficult.

A lot of non-NRA members have more training and shoot/practice more than the cops.

I have had difficulty with several cops for bad gun habits.
I don’t mean to ding on them (I do when I have to), but please don’t ding on us when we’ve done nothing wrong.

Poor Sherrif!

If he could just grasp the whole “armed citizen” concept, he would worry much less about new applications for CCWs. He could start honestly expressing his fears that there is a high probability that he won't be able to forcibly stop an uprising amid the general law abiding populace, if/when they ever get fed up with his incompetence.

And WHY should he care about who’s carrying weapons

LEGALLY AFTER INTENSE BACKGROUND CHECKS AND TRAINING?

unless he’s one of those “only agents of the state should be armed” kinda guys...

Many sheriffs’ departments are adopting more policies of municipal police departments and contemporary academia (e.g., women’s studies).

It’s a sign that people have lost faith in the ability of law enforcement personnel to do their job, being subverted by political and financial interests as they are. Police officers used to be respected members of the community, but that all changed when politics and psychological picking of the worst traits became common. The cops I see today are a mere shadow of the real police officers I seen in my youth. When I grew up, police were part of the community, looking out for our best interests, they were approachable. The current crop of cops are like an occupying army, to be feared and loathed.

“I live in north central Ohio. Our county sheriff makes it easy for residents to get their CCW’s.”

Wayne County? I live in Northfield Center. The tiny part of Summit that juts into Cuyahoga County. The next town North, Northfield Village,,,, well,,, the demographics are changing. Not “Suburban Sprawl,” More like “Urban Crawl.” My house is well protected, but,,,, I’m fixin’ it up. Gonna sell and move further out!

Went to downtown Cleveland two weeks ago, to have Dim Sum at my favorite restaurant, Bo Loong. Had to park on the side street, as the lot was full. There was a bunch of “Youths” walking away from me, but when they saw this old guy park his car, they turned around, and headed my way. I was carrying,,,, not supposed to, and I had my “special” cane. A bone breaker! I got back in my car and split for Li Wah. Didn’t need the aggravation. Called the cops though.

Any time you hear a well paid government "employee" say he supports the Second Amendment, the one thing you can be absolutely sure of is the vermin is going to add "but," followed by a bunch of qualifiers and/or complaints and/or baseless fears and/or whining.

Fire the bums. There's no shortage of people who can do their jobs and respect our civil rights.
