Summit County sheriff worried about surge in CCW permits

AKRON, Ohio - Summit County Sheriff Drew Alexander said he's concerned about a surge in the number of residents applying for a carrying concealed weapon permit.

"I think you have to understand in today's society, we don't know who is carrying weapons out there," Alexander said.

In 2011, the Summit County Sheriff's department issued 1,252 CCW permits. That number will easily be surpassed this year. The department has issued 1,168 permits through July and 93 more applications were submitted in the first nine days of August.

"The recent shootings in Colorado and Wisconsin obviously are having some effect," Alexander said.

Alexander said he supports the 2nd amendment, the right to bear arms, but is bothered that Ohio's CCW law only calls for 10 hours of firearms training in a classroom and an additional two hours of experience shooting at a range.

He would like to see those hours increased and more thorough background checks conducted.

"The average citizen that' getting their CCW license out there doesn't have the firearms training that a lot of NRA members and law enforcement officers have," Alexander said.

The Dayton Daily News reported that the state's sheriffs issued 18,823 CCW permits in the first three months of 2012. That's about a 40 percent increase from the same period two years ago.

If I were a Summit county resident, I’d be “concerned” that maybe we need a new Sheriff.

I live in north central Ohio. Our county sheriff makes it easy for residents to get their CCW’s.

If we can take care of ourselves...it’s less work for him and his deputies.

10 hours is a lot of training.
Ohio has the same requirements for training that Texas has.

The good sheriff is worried about two things:

1) He can’t control the legitimate tenets of the Second Amendment any longer.
2) He knows that he’s failing at his job and the people sensing it are arming themselves.

There is just no data to suggest that in states where people can carry guns that there is any increase in gun violence. Probably the reverse is true. Maybe it’s time for the LEO’s to partner with the citizens instead of trying to subjugate and abuse them.

Get rid of the regulation altogether and I’m betting you’ll find that a lot of people become true experts even without the 10 hour course.

"I think you have to understand in today's society, we don't know who is carrying weapons out there," Alexander said.

Hey! Dummkopf! Cops with guns are more likely to commit crimes with guns than CCW-holders.

...the average citizen -- yes, even the average cop -- is much more likely to commit a crime with a gun than is a gun owner with a concealed carry permit.

Here in Texas it is a percentage of percent of the time.

Like .04% of overall gun crimes.

It’s time for Summit County Sheriff Drew Alexander to resign and take up residence in some community in Mexico where citizens don’t want their silly guns and all are safe from those bitter clingers, and Drew wouldn’t have to wet his pants so often.

I understand the Sheriff’s concern, I really do. But he has to understand that he’s concerned about a problem he doesn’t have yet, and a problem that he does have - that all of us have - is criminals who are armed. I would gently suggest that for his own peace of mind he concentrate on the problem he does have and leave the potential ones to their own time.

I’m an “extremist” who thinks all free men have a right to be armed. If they’re too dangerous to carry a gun, they belong in prison.

I grew up in NE Ohio. These fools have screwed up Summit Co. for quite a while now.

Drew Alexander and his whole extended family of inbred idiots are a bunch of useless eaters.

I would carry concealed Photobucket but I couldn't find a place to put it.

Some of us don't have internal storage compartments big enough to hide a tommygun in.
