As Chief of Cherokee Nation, Oklahoma’s delegate is used to meeting with president
Modified: Friday, Aug. 10, 2012

Cherokee Nation Chief Bill John Baker said of President Barack Obama: “We really appreciate the attitude his administration has placed toward Indian Country.”

Chief Bill John Baker of the Cherokee Nation met with President Barack Obama last month in Washington, D.C., to talk about tribal issues.

**SNIP**

Baker is a fourth-generation Cherokee born and raised in Tahlequah, Okla., the capital of the Cherokee Nation. His great-great-grandmother was brought there in the early 19th century after her parents died on the “Trail of Tears.”

“I said there is no reason he could not be as you implied that he was almost NOT an Indian. “

I don’t even understand what you wrote, with “no/not/NOT” in the same sentence. English Sentence Composition 101 would help a tad bit...

It’s impossible to prove a negative.

He teaches at Oklahoma State U. He’s a full-blood Comanche, the area in and round Ft.Sill(Cochise County) is the ancestral home of the Comanche(second largest Indian nation and some tough-ass people). I’ve been corresponding with him for some few years now, he’s a good man. He HATES the hell out of Morris Dees too!

Obama tactics here. When you are shown to be wrong so you can't run on that, hit the opponent with what ever you can come up with to try to make him look stupid. So you attack a typo instead of proving me wrong on the subject. Nice try.

I will correct my statement so you can get back on the subject at hand.

I'll repeat it. I said there is no reason that he could not be (full blooded) as you implied that he was almost NOT an Indian at all. Can you hear me now!!

Do you know what courses he teaches? I would be interested in speaking with him because I am not far from Okie State. By the way I have met some pretty conservative Osages.

Just so everyone knows I am not an Indian. My handle is a combination of my first name, the former color of my hair, and my last name. I did not know it was the name used by by a famous Indian artist until after I began using the handle.

I'm not attacking a typo, and you are certainly not stupid. I never said or implied that. You did. I'm still just trying to figure out ***what you're saying/asking***, so that I can give you an answer. I can't untangle all the no/not/NOTs... can you re-phrase it?

Post #9 said he's not; I never said it in Post #2. Only that there are so many frauds/fakes out there claiming to be Indian, and he doesn't have any of the physical features, that his claim is suspicious, on the surface.

Has he proved his lineage? I assume that if he's carrying the title "Chief", and others aren't calling him a liar like Churchill and Warren, he's proved it?

Yes?

No?

According to Dingy Harry Reid, it 'might be out there' that he's 'possibly' a fraud, so he needs to prove it.

The burden of proof isn't on me; it's on him.

Yes, I *HEAR* you, but I still don’t understand *WHAT* you’re asking.

It is very clear too me CH. He is saying there is no reason to assume he is or is not full blood from the article. You implied that he was not from the same article. You used no other source from which you drew that possible conclusion.

Arguing to argue...

“...fourth-generation Cherokee born... His great-great-grandmother...”

Difficult, if not impossible, to prove/disprove. Lots of BS room in that claim.

Read Post #9, from someone who knows better than all of us.

I’m done with this semantic, gymnastic silliness.

I’ve got Cherokee on both sides, seven on the Guion-Miller Rolls, an indian census. A past chief of the Eastern Band, George Hicks, was a third cousin.

I don’t have any idea what “fourth generation Cherokee” means, either. You are or you aren’t. There is no magic tribal fairy that could have waved a wand and made a great grandparent into one, who wasn’t one already. Heck, I don’t even consider myself to be, despite the ancestry. Never lived as one.

I would say the fourth generation in Oklahoma.

Trail of Tears

In the winter of 1831, under threat of invasion by the U.S. Army, the Choctaw became the first nation to be expelled from its land altogether. They made the journey to Indian territory on foot (some “bound in chains and marched double file,” one historian writes) and without any food, supplies or other help from the government.

In 1836, the federal government drove the Creeks from their land for the last time: 3,500 of the 15,000 Creeks who set out for Oklahoma did not survive the trip.

1838, only about 2,000 Cherokees had left their Georgia homeland for Indian territory. President Martin Van Buren sent General Winfield Scott and 7,000 soldiers to expedite the removal process. Scott and his troops forced the Cherokee into stockades at bayonet point while whites looted their homes and belongings. Then, they marched the Indians more than 1,200 miles to Indian territory. Whooping cough, typhus, dysentery, cholera and starvation were epidemic along the way, and historians estimate that more than 5,000 Cherokee died as a result of the journey.

Doing the math, I don't find it hard to believe he is fourth generation in Oklahoma. We could write books on peoples inability to plug out comprehensive articles, myself included. Have a good day.

The Indians alive today are not the same ones who suffered when their lands were taken away many years ago. How long does this compensation last? As for being one-quarter Indian, how about Elizabeth Warren as the poster girl for taking advantage of racial and ethnic preferences? It’s laughable to believe there aren’t people claiming to be Indians who are about as Indian as Warren is.

If they are truly sovereign nations, let them take care of themselves now. The fact that they run casinos where desperate people gamble away their welfare money is another reason to stop the government gravy train for grievances left over from the 19th century.

all true. It also takes proof of first Indian ancestors homestead to get a roll number now and believe me Indians want to swell the roll number. Just ask their roll number next time someone says they are Indian.

Not sure of what courses he teaches. I’d suggest going to his site and registering so you can post and if you look over his home page he has an e-mail address, he’s not hard to get to know although he is fairly busy at times however, as I said he’s an approachable guy. Word to the wise though, Doctor Yeagley ( I don’t generally like to call him’’Doc’’) does NOT tolerate bs, bad language or bad manners on his web-site, all due respect to Free Republic but we do tend to get, er,uh, a little carried away here at times however Bad Eagle.com ain’t Free Republic! So behave.
