* Democrat Daniel Akaka, 86, is retiring from Senate
* Lingle is heavily favored to win Republican primary
* Republican has set up her own cable TV station
HONOLULU, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Voters in Hawaii went to the polls on Saturday in a primary expected to set up Republicans for their first real chance at a U.S. Senate seat in the heavily Democratic state since 1970.
A victory by former governor Linda Lingle, who has an early edge in fundraising, in President Barack Obama's home state could also help Republicans take control of the U.S. Senate as they battle for a net gain of four seats.
While analysts expect Lingle to easily win her Republican primary contest, U.S. Representative Mazie Hirono and former Congressman Ed Case are locked in what is seen as a closer contest on the Democratic side to contest the Senate seat.

The debate could win it for Lingle. She's very good.
Yes, some purists on FR won't like her because Lingle is moderate in some areas, but to have her in the Senate over Hirono would be 1000% better. BTW...Lingle is a good friend of Palin.
No one here claims the bastard that I have seen or heard. The only cars with bumper stickers for the turd are driven by angry old white people, not Hawaiians or Asians.
Lingle ... rhymes with sells out to 0m0slem again.
> Zero’s home state is Illinoise, not Hawaii
And his home village is in Kenya where he was born.
” not Hawaiians or Asians. “
Happy to hear it ! You live in Hawaii ?
Lingle is a liberal and she killed the HI GOP.
Lingle’s a RINO.
Lingle pushed for the HI super-ferry and she vetoed gay marriage.
She speaks out in favor of business ALL THE TIME.
Hirono does none of this. Easy choice IMO.
I am FBI....(From Big Island) popular tee shirts here.
Hawaii needs to be cut loose from the U.S. entirely. Cut a deal for the bases and leave them to their own devices. 4 Communist members from there, for which the 2 Senators can mean the difference between a majority and minority status has to end.
If you cut HI loose China will move in. Our bases won't be a whole lot of good on Chinese communist terrain.
He was just a poor use of human skin, and a useless eater as the democrats would say if he wasn’t a democrat....
What the hell is an 86 year old doing in the Senate in the first place??
Been to the Big Island twice ( from Japan ...was there last in March ) . Going again with wife , and this time daughter , this coming March . Renting a house on the ocean between White Sands Beach and Kahaluu Beach . Love the BI and would move there in a second if I had the dough .
Hell, the Red Chinese aren’t as Communist as American Democrats.
Whatever your opinion on Democrats, I still don’t think our military in HI would appreciate us leaving them on Chinese soil and allowing the Chinese to be that much closer to our mainland.
Both Communist Senators from Hawaii are 88. (Born in 1924)
I’m curious under what scenario that by granting Hawaii independence that it instantly becomes a province of Red China.
HI is too strategic a location for the large countries to not want it and HI is too weak politically to stand on its own.
With its expanding wealth, China is the most likely candidate to take it over.
I agree - it would be good to have her...although at best to come along for the ride. I would not want her to be the deciding vote on repealing Obamacare as she might not do it given it is likely (for whatever reason) popular in that state...and she is more likely to then want a “bipartisan” solution since all of the pressure would be on her. A couple of extra seats than just a bear minimum majority would be best.
She got rid of a children's universal health program in HI when she was Governor.
Lingle is hard to pigeonhole. Fiscally she is quite conservative. There's a few social issues where she is more moderate, but she vetoed gay marriage. It would be an amazing feat if she beat out the Democrats and helped us to get the Senate Chairmanships.
“I am FBI....(From Big Island) popular tee shirts here.”
We Punatics are with you all the way. Just a little discouraging that the election here is held up and polls will close an hour and a half late due to “snafus”...code word for Damocrats running the process.
Pi$$ed in Keaau.
That’s a foolish suggestion. Our military presents in the Pacific is vital to our national and international interest.
Yes, Lingle in office is a better choice.
I said keep the bases. As a state, it is moonbat and its elected officials are execrable, as has mostly been the case since statehood.
She’s the best RINO we got over here. There are NO conservatives in the islands that could get on a ballot. If you want to run for office here you have to register Democrat or run as a RINO that will “reach across the aisle”. That’s the way it is here and no one can do a damn thing about it.
There isn’t an honest Democratic Party politician in Hawaii. Read “Hawai’i Free Press” and you’ll see what I mean. (Okay, maybe Inouye but he’s moved left over the years).
Hawaii is not Obama’s home state; Chicago is. Hawaii (or Kenya, depending on who you listen too), is Obama’s birth state.
Reuters - sometimes very good; sometimes just carelessly wrong.
You are correct. EVEN if it would cost us the bases (which it need not) 2 Marxist Senators are NOT an even trade. If worse came to worse we could forcibly occupy them ala Gitmo.
I’m a huge advocate or reorginzing boundaries for electoral purposes. German reunification was a huge mistake, East Germany still votes for leftist scum, Thatcher was right, a free but separate east was the right way to go. England should kiss Scotland GOODBYE, they send nothing but scum to Parliament.
Hawaii and Vermont should F off as far as I’m concerned. Hawaiian Independence and Vermont to Canada are only supported right now by a tiny leftist fringe but more power to them.
BTW Hirono won as expected which I think is the better outcome for Lingle.
Relax I feel your pain since I’m in IL, but he carpetbagged here and HI voters treated him like a favorite son same as IL ones did. You know who was born and raised here? Shillary! Sucks!
Lots of Black pols like to carpetbag here. All 3 Black Congressman? Born in the South.
I thought the better outcome would be Case beating Hirono ? I see Tulsi Gabbard won in the 1st, which means she’ll undoubtedly be the hottest member of Congress, hands down.
Oops, make that the 2nd. Djou will be having his rematch with Hanabusa in the 1st.
I didn’t know there was any chance Hannemann could lose, I didn’t bother to look up this chick. Finally a Leninist broad that’s easy on the eyes. Shocking!!!!! Our nomination went to some d-bag who thinks “smoker’s rights” is the most important issue facing Hawaii and the nation. That’s all that’s on his website. He joins that gay megarino in MA Tisei as GOP House candidates I feel no need to endorse.
As for the Senate. Well I was thinking if Case won, Asians would be more likely to vote Lingle. But isn’t Case more popular with indies? It was a while ago and maybe Case himself put it out there but there was a poll that showed him with a larger lead over Lingle.
Thank God you weren't in the postion to plan and execute strategy during the Revolutionary War, WWI and WWII...
And to think one of them is 3rd in line to the President!
Primary Election Results
> Hawaii needs to be cut loose from the U.S. entirely....
Are you a member of the “Kingdom of Atooi” Hawaiian sovereignty movement?
Polynesian Kingdom of Atooi
> There isnt an honest Democratic Party politician in Hawaii.
I know one less honest person in Hawaii because he became a Dem. in ‘08 and became a state legislator.
> Read Hawaii Free Press
The very interesting HI-02 Dem primary pitted the Samoan, 6’7” (IIRC) former Harvard basketball star, pro-life, Mormon mayor of Honolulu, Mufi Hannemann, versus the young, very attractive daughter of a Republican state senator (who recently switched to the Democrats because Republicans were down to less than 10% in the body) and who herself was an Iraq War veteran and the youngest legislator in U.S. history, Tulsi Gabbard. I have to assume that, being her father’s daughter, Gabbard will vote less liberal than any of the Communists who have represented HI-02 through the years, but I would have preferred Hannemann, who (i) is pro-life, (ii) is relatively old, and thus less likely to use that seat as a springboard to the U.S. Senate, and (iii) controversial enough among Democrats so as to have given Republicans a chance at an upset victory in 2014 (if a legitimate candidate ran instead of the third-tier guys running this year).
As for the Senate race, I agree that I’d rather have Lingle face Hirono, since Lingle has beat her once before and since Lingle should be able to get votes from the moderates and goo-goos (if you aren’t familiar with the term, look it up before assuming that it’s racial in origin) who support Case. Besides, as DJ pointed out, Hirono is too old to become a 6-term senator if the Hawaiian Democrat tradition, while Case is far younger, so she’d be preferable if Lingle can’t beat her.
You seemed to ignore the last two sentences.
Yup. Although fortunately that might end come January (and the job goes to Orrin Hatch).
Nope. I’m in favor of not having an insular ultraleftist state thousands of miles from the mainland with its 2 Communist Senators being the difference between a minority and majority status for our governing body. Without those 2, we may very well could’ve halted ZeroCare (and more than that, as a foreign and independent country, Zero himself could never have ascended to the Presidency). Just a fe key problems having Hawaii poses for us.
Unfortunately, it appears Gabbard switched on life and gay issues to the dark side in order to run for Congress and was backed by Emily’s List. Some leftists thought she lacked credibility by her recent switch, but I’d be surprised if she suddenly starts voting Conservatively.
There seriously needs to be a way to call the bluff of freepers who constantly whine about "yankee transplants who tell us how to run our state" and set up some kind of "political transplant exchange" program, where we agree to take back our "yankees" and they can have all our politicians that are from south of the Mason-Dixon line (according to them, there's no such thing as southerners who move to Illinois, so there's nothing to worry about)
The northern states would fare far better under this deal and rid ourselves of numerous commies that have wreaked our states. I guess we'd end up with Don Sunquist back, but getting rid of Jackson Sr. & Jr. would be well worth it. And I haven't even started to look into all the southern transplants we have in the state legislature and local governments.
Mufi may not be that pro-life
<<<<<<”Hannemann offered the most conservative viewpoints on abortion, but still defended women’s right to choose.
“While I am personally opposed to abortion, I believe that every woman should have the ability to utilize their free agency in exercising their right to choose,” Hannemann said.”>>>>>>>>>>
Ted Kennedy is that you. “I’m again’ it but don’t worry I won’t do anything about it!!”
He was a bit wishy washy on Roe
<<<”Hannemann described Roe v. Wade as “the law of the land,” and himself as “bound to uphold” it. He also said that individual states should be tasked with regulating abortion.”>>>>
Sounds like a RINO right there.
He did say marriage is “between a man and a woman,”.
Still for Hawaii a primary between a socially moderate Mormon and a the scion of a GOP traitor is pretty good.
I’d make the trade, all Illinois natives for all carpetbaggers.
Take Obama, the Jackson’s and Rush and I’ll take back Scumquist and even Hillary!
Plus, Reagan, born and raised.
That’s not pro-life at all. How many “personally” pro-aborts vote pro-life ? It’s like the marriage issue, I’d rather you be “personally” pro-fudge but vote NO on that abomination than the other way around. It ain’t how you talk, it’s how you vote.
I’d pay to see that.
“I’m personally for gay marriage BUT......” LOL
But I have yet to see any of them say, "While I PERSONALLY think gay marriage is normal and healthy and applaud two men sealing their eternal love in a public ceremony, I have NO RIGHT to change 200 years of American laws to force my PERSONAL beliefs on society..." ;-)
On the flip side, you see similar standards with the Perrybot wing of the GOP when it comes to screaming "STATES RIGHTS!!!" on every issue, but then fighting tooth and nail to keep states from doing anything to deport illegals or curtail gun ownership...
