'Usain Bolt won his third gold medal of the 2012 Olympics as he anchored Jamaica's sprint relay team to a sensational world record.

Jamaica's quartet clocked 36.84 seconds to smash the old mark by two-tenths of a second and leave the USA team with silver.

Nesta Carter and Michael Frater produced excellent first and second legs but it was 100m and 200m silver medallist Yohan Blake's blistering third leg that set the platform.

Bolt provided the perfect finale - exploding away to leave Ryan Bailey trailing as the capacity crowd stood to acclaim him.'

In Jamaica? I thought the Olympics were in London.

Seems like most of the winning racers are black guys. Why is that?

It's physiological. Some years ago, a study of basketball players revealed that blacks can jump higher than whites because of the greater leverage afforded by the attachment of their ligaments joining the calves and the thighs. The ligaments are placed higher on the thigh and somewhat lower on the calf.

The same physiological difference creates an advantage in the sprints -- a stronger "burst" out of the starting blocks.

Understand that these physiological differences are not universal. Some whites enjoy the same advantage. But a much higher proportion of blacks do.

I have observed that Slavic gals are quite competitive in these track events. I wonder if sexual dimorphism plays into the ligament-attachment explanation.

I wouldn't have any idea. That one post expended my knowledge on the subject.

It is certainly true, though, that -- while race and ethnicity aren't necessarily determinative -- there are physical characteristics that are clearly "characteristic" of particular races and ethnicities.

What's interesting is that the physiological advantages don't include ALL blacks, but mainly those of West African descent. That's why sprinters from the U.S. and former British colonies around the Atlantic Ocean tend to dominate sprint events.

Many East Africans, on the other hand, don't seem to have a build that is well suited for short sprints ... but in places like Kenya they are tall, thin, and very well suited to long-distance running.

Actually, a lot of those Slavic women struck me as thespians, no?

It’s early, I know, but I cannot figure the time out. How do four men run 400 meters in a time that is nearly two seconds better than the time would be if each ran at 100 meter world record speeds?

Runners after the first get up to speed before receiving the baton. The time of acceleration, in effect, does not count.

There’s not enough mustard in the world to cover this hot dog, but you’ve got to admit...you can’t take your eyes off him.

Was not a Bolt fan until he stopped an interview and turned toward the podium in respect when the U.S. National Anthem was being played when an American was receiving a gold medal for a different event.

That was a class act.

Good point. The gene isn't so much "black" as "regional".
