Doctors target gun violence as a social disease

Is a gun like a virus, a car, tobacco or alcohol? Yes say public health experts, who in the wake of recent mass shootings are calling for a fresh look at gun violence as a social disease.

What we need, they say, is a public health approach to the problem, like the highway safety measures, product changes and driving laws that slashed deaths from car crashes decades ago, even as the number of vehicles on the road rose.

.............Dr. David Satcher tried to make gun violence a public health issue when he became CDC director in 1993. Four years later, laws that allow the carrying of concealed weapons drew attention when two women were shot at an Indianapolis restaurant after a patron's gun fell out of his pocket and accidentally fired. Ironically, the victims were health educators in town for an American Public Health Association convention.

That same year, Hargarten won a federal grant to establish the nation's first Firearm Injury Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

"Unlike almost all other consumer products, there is no national product safety oversight of firearms," he wrote in the Wisconsin Medical Journal.

That's just one aspect of a public health approach. Other elements:.......

......Disease patterns, observing how a problem spreads. Gun ownership — a precursor to gun violence — can spread "much like an infectious disease circulates," said Daniel Webster, a health policy expert and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research in Baltimore.....

May 2012: U.S. Surgeon General—Keynote Commencement Speaker, Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology David Satcher, M.D., PhD, is the 16th Surgeon General of the United States who was appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1998-2002 while serving simultaneously as the Assistant Secretary for Health

...... Two overarching themes run through “Mental Health: A Report of the Surgeon General”--- the importance of information, policies and activities that reduce and eventually eliminate the cruel and unfair stigma attached to mental illness; and the importance of a solid research base for every mental health and mental illness intervention.

....."Of his disappointments Satcher speaks of supporting research showing that guns were most dangerous to the people who owned them than they were in terms of protection. “We tried to get Congress to pass gun control legislation, but that was used against me when I was being considered for Surgeon General”, he said."...

Government run “health care” is an open door to control everything we do or consume.

With RomneyCARE/ObamaCARE, "doctors" are agents of the state.

Who cares what a Provider (a state owned-"doctor") says under duress.

"RomneyCare 2.0 With costs rising fast, Massachusetts moves to dictate medical care
Under the plan, all Massachusetts doctors, hospitals and other providers must register
with a new state bureaucracy as a condition of licensure—that is, permission to practice.
They'll be required to track and report their financial performance, price and cost trends,
state-sanctioned quality measures, market share and other metrics."

This will open the back door to the same type of unfounded regulations as the EPA has used against the coal industry.

gun violence?
This is difference from other violence?
How?
Is a human being more violated or more dead if you shoot them, then if you beat a person to death with a baseball bat?
IDIOTS. The problem is PEOPLE not the gun or the bat.....

“Unlike almost all other consumer products, there is no national product safety oversight of firearms,” he wrote in the Wisconsin Medical Journal.

And, “all other consumer products” should be treated the same; there should be NO Government sponsored “national product safety oversight” on those, either.
Product safety should be a function of free market dynamics, not government intrusion into the private sector. There is no Constitutional authority for such intrusion.

Notice the almost imperceptible, seamless way gun violence and gun ownership are blended to be virtually the same thing. Also missing is any allowance for justifiable gun violence as in self protection.

Unwarranted gun violence may be a social disease; gun ownership and self-protection are not.

Why can't statism be considered a 'social disease', esp. considering its far more virulent pathology?

This new law waspassed by Democrat house and senate and signed by a Democrat governor. I don’t like Romney care, but this law was NOT part of it.

This is exactly why you should never have to answer a doctor’s question as to whether you have guns or not.

If mere ownership of guns caused gun violence, then Wisconsin would have massacres weekley similar to what happened at the Sikh temple. Thousands or hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites have multiple firearms. My part of the state has a large contingent of hunters and gun owners many of whom have multiple firearms. It has one of the lowest crime rates in the country. And a few murders we’ve had recently were the work of criminal gangs. If you were going choose a person most likely to go on shooting rampage, you might pick someone, like Page, who’d lost his job, his girlfriend, and was a member of a hate group. Target those people...not law-abiding citizens.

None of my doctors feel this way, by the way. I feel great emotions this a.m. as I listen to a beautiful spiritual tune, “Behold the Lamb,” while I read this article and others and I sense that war is on the horizon for our great nation if these people cannot be stopped. These bureaucracies and their surrogates in the media and other secular bodies have become so corrupt and so powerful that they view us as lambs just ready for slaughter and we might be called upon to be just that. If you are so inclined you might read a description from the book of Judges (Christian Bible), Chapter 17:1 through 21:25 to get an idea of how wrong human actions have a domino effect throughout a society, which can bring certain disaster down on everyone. My only power is to pray for I might never live to see the end of this but some of you will and, God forbid, your children will. If your mean of protecting yourself from the tyranny they plan are removed through the confiscation of your guns, then, you are sitting ducks. They use the influence of “doctors,” and “mental health” (remember Hitler), to try and bring about their agenda which will promote the serfdom of our people. I am beyond the economic/jobs issue of this election..I see it as a choice between freedom and dictatorship and I firmly believe that if Obama is re-elected, we will head quickly into just that. Paul Ryan will not back down from trying to tell this country what is happening. He is a good choice for Romney but I fear that the tipping point of the “takers” vs the “givers,” has occurred. We shall see.

” like Page, who’d lost his job, his girlfriend, and was a member of a hate group. Target those people...not law-abiding citizens. “

Ummmmm...

“Lost job”, “Lost Girlfriend”, “Member of a ‘hate group’” - last I checked, none of these is against any law...

Or does your definition of ‘non-law-abiding’ include ‘lifestyles/life events/life choices you don’t approve of’???

By making it a disease, it is out of the hands of the legislature and in the hands of bureaucrats who can edit the definitions as required. And they are not banning guns - simply limiting or denying care if you own one. Exercising your right results in a denial of care, but not active round-ups and jail time. It’s a softer kind of fascism.
