Doctors target gun violence as a social disease
San Antonio-Express News ^ | August 12, 2012 | MARILYNN MARCHIONE

Is a gun like a virus, a car, tobacco or alcohol? Yes say public health experts, who in the wake of recent mass shootings are calling for a fresh look at gun violence as a social disease.

What we need, they say, is a public health approach to the problem, like the highway safety measures, product changes and driving laws that slashed deaths from car crashes decades ago, even as the number of vehicles on the road rose.

.............Dr. David Satcher tried to make gun violence a public health issue when he became CDC director in 1993. Four years later, laws that allow the carrying of concealed weapons drew attention when two women were shot at an Indianapolis restaurant after a patron's gun fell out of his pocket and accidentally fired. Ironically, the victims were health educators in town for an American Public Health Association convention.

That same year, Hargarten won a federal grant to establish the nation's first Firearm Injury Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

"Unlike almost all other consumer products, there is no national product safety oversight of firearms," he wrote in the Wisconsin Medical Journal.

That's just one aspect of a public health approach. Other elements:.......

......Disease patterns, observing how a problem spreads. Gun ownership — a precursor to gun violence — can spread "much like an infectious disease circulates," said Daniel Webster, a health policy expert and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research in Baltimore.....

By classifying it as a disease, you will be taken in for “treatment” to cure your disease.

In fact this would be just the start.

Whatever leftist ideology you don't conform to will be called a disease and you will be taken in for treatment.

I already dealt with a pediatrician asking my kid, privately, if there are guns in the house. I have NO IDEA where that information would have been reported if he said yes, or what the follow-up questions would have been - I suspect it goes into some database, along with the rest of his records.

I remember Florida was trying to outlaw that kind of crap, but even people here defended it as “doctor-patient” privilege. Sickening.

If your doctor asks if you have guns, just turn the table on him/her.

My doc asked this once, and I came right back with: "Do you have any malpractice suits still outstanding?"

He immediately got the connection to legitimate activity assumed to be wrongful, assumption of guilt, motive of profit and control on the part of the accuser, and it made it personal to him.

He never asked again, and I (and family) never participated in any of his health research studies again.

“”refused to answer”
Good for you. It’s none of their $%^%^%$ business.”

While I admire the stand on principle - I suspect that “refusing to answer” is considered a “yes” answer, but it does cut off the follow-up questions (about storage, ammo, kids access, etc.). Even so, that answer does put you in the database, maybe even in the kook database (i.e., anti-government type). [and no, nothing personal intended, I’m just looking at it from the government angle]

“All my doctors and dentists, including my personal physician, were/are hunters i.e. gun owners.”

You’re not the only one. But some of us have to find new doctors - and if we ask, we get lopped into the kook category.

“... refusing to answer is considered a yes answer”.

You are probably correct. By refusing, you appear “guilty” and “secretive”. My husband did refuse... I didn’t answer correctly. I would go into detail but my response makes women laugh and men cringe. (we’ll leave it at that since I was in hard labor). What is great about this thread is that it prepares freepers to this type of question. Both of us were not prepared at all. Even if your primary physician has never asked, there may come a time when you have to go to another type of doctor (a specialist of sorts) and that is when the question can be posed in writing OR verbally. The knowledge that this question may be presented to one in the future helps planning a good response. IMHO.

Interesting they feel the need to go this route. Further proof that a lot of “medicine” of the mind is just quackery.

Meanwhile promiscuity by teens and homosexuals will continue to be encouraged without moral or health discussions. STDs and mental health be damned.

Yea, you have to pick your battles carefully. Sometimes a polite “no” is best.

In this case, you have to pick your battles at the legislative level. But, yep, if you don’t expect it, you will not be ready and certainly will not have a plan thought out. For that, you have to think quickly and be prepared to lie.

you are correct, a very good post. And when it is time to bury your guns, it will be time to dig them up. When, and if there is ever an effort to confiscate guns door to door, you have lost far more than your firearm rights. You have, at that time, lost them all.
Maybe civil war isn’t such a bad thing. I believe it was Patton who said that “War is the greatest endeavor that man can undertake, everything else pales by comparison”

HHS dictates coming down the pike?

The left will do anything that works to ban guns, from lead "contamination of the environment" to "child safety."

Last night we had a lovely family over to dinner in our home. They are naturalized citizens from Ethiopia. Do they EVER understand the Second Amendment.

THe only violence that needs control is Government. Our Founding Fathers knew what an evil over-regulating church can wrought and what real peace and pastoral life was all about.

I am tired of those psychos. We need to control them.

Trayvon, Loughner, Karl Marx, Ivan, their handlers, Hitler, Stalin, Obama, Holmes, Holder, Hillary and, yes, the Sikh temple murderer, are all one and the same type of revolutionaries who all have thoughts of never being wrong and always being right. They are a culture petri dish from hell, all children of satan. They always blame somebody else, or, worse, an inanimate object, to hide their evil and indulgences and “rights” and other fantasies that Kenya built America.

This is not about “gay marriage” or fairness, this is about intransigeance, imposture, crime and crazies.

There is a well-established negative correlation between legal gun ownership and gun violence. The "disease" in the US is in the inner cities, where guns are procured illegally.

I bet they do!

Meanwhile in Venezuela (where armed citizens have been a check on Hugo Chavez's total communist take over of the country) under the guise of "rise in violent crime".....

Venezuela Bans Gun Sales Amid Rise In Violent Crime "The Venezuelan government passed a new gun law that prohibits the commercial sale of firearms and ammunition, moving the country closer to President Hugo Chavez and his administration's goal of disarming all civilians as crime rates continue to rise.

The new law will effectively end the sales of firearms and ammunition by private retailers. Only the army, police and certain exceptions such as security firms will be able to purchase weapons from a state-owned manufacturer or importer.

The ban has been touted as the government's latest initiative to improve public security and reduce crime in the runup to the presidential elections in October.".....
