We must act now to prevent gun violence (barf alert)

When is the right time to take sensible and pragmatic action with regard to guns?

Is it after the senseless and tragic "mass shootings" that leave us shocked and numb at the very thought that such cruel and brazen acts of terror are committed in our communities, our neighborhoods?

It's been a week since the Oak Creek tragedy; about four weeks since the mass shooting in Aurora, Colo.; just over two months since a gunman murdered five people in a Seattle coffee house; a little over a year and a half since six people were gunned down and 18 others, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, were wounded in Tucson, Ariz.; and five years since 32 people lost their lives at Virginia Tech.

As a country, we watch the news and feel intense grief as details of those murdered and wounded unfold. We hear from the pro-gun lobby and the gun control groups. We move on.

Should we take action after the men and women who are sworn to uphold the law, protect and serve and put their lives on the line are shot in the line of duty?

Tom Barrett needs to go to Chicago. Chicago has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country. About two dozen people were shot in Chicago in the last 3 days - so we know those gun control laws are working.../s

Go for it Tom Barrett... take guns away from law biding citizens... And while you're at it, take all the knives away too. All of 'em. Even the bread and butter ones in middle class homes. We all know if law biding people are denied any access to kitchen knives, that criminals will stop using knives for crimes...

Ayers’ then-girlfriend Diana Oughton, along with Weatherman members Terry Robbins and Ted Gold, were killed when a bomb they were constructing exploded unexpectedly. That bomb had been intended for detonation at a dance that was to be attended by hundreds of Army soldiers at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Ayers himself attested that the bomb would have done serious damage, “tearing through windows and walls and, yes, people too.” Notably, Ayers’ fingerprints were found at the bomb-making site, along with an assortment of anti-personnel weapons, stabbing implements, C-4 plastic explosive, and dozens of Marxist-Leninist publications.
