Rasmussen: Ryan favorability 39/25, 52/29 among … seniors
Hotair ^ | 08/12/2012 | Rasmussen

Posted on 08/12/2012 7:37:40 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

The media has talked about Paul Ryan's budget as an albatross that would hang from Mitt Romney's neck with or without Ryan on the ticket, and the assumption has been that Ryan himself will also be a net negative for the GOP in November. Democrats tried to proactively damage Ryan's standing with voters by depicting him pushing an elderly woman off of a cliff in May 2011, when Ryan first proposed his comprehensive, long-term budget reform package in May 2011. Rasmussen Reports has reminds us that a July survey showed Ryan's favorability as mainly positive, albeit with a significant number of likely voters who need more time to make up their minds:

Mitt Romney announced this morning that Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan will be his running mate.

Earlier polling found that 39% of all voters had a favorable opinion of Ryan, while 25% offered a negative review. Thirty-five percent (35%) express no opinion of Ryan. The congressman is relatively unknown to the nation at large. Only a third of voters have a strong opinion in either direction.

Wisconsin is a state both sides consider key to the presidential election. Right now, President Obama has a modest three-point lead over Romney in the state, and it remains a Toss-Up in the Rasmussen Reports Electoral College Projections.

Scott Rasmussen has explained why Romney’s roll-out of his vice presidential pick is as important as the choice itself. “Most Americans will learn all they know about the new name on the ticket during the week the candidate is introduced,” he wrote in a recent newspaper column. While 69% of Republicans have a favorable opinion of Ryan, 42% of voters not affiliated with either major political party have no opinion of him one way or the other at this point.

Let’s take a look at the demos from that July poll. What leaps out from that survey is that Ryan actually does better among independents than any of the other presumed short-listers, save Condoleezza Rice, who wasn’t really shortlisted at all. Among unaffiliated voters, Ryan scores a 36/22 favorability, compared to 31/29 for Bobby Jindal, 26/28 for Tim Pawlenty, and a dismal 15/16 for Rob Portman. (Rice was 63/19 among indies.) Ryan also scores best among women, albeit with a narrow 29/25 edge.

For even more counterintuitive results, look at Ryan’s standing among seniors. Despite the attacks on Ryan over his budget plan, he’s easily the most liked of the short-listers among likely voters 65 years of age and over, with a 52/29 favorability rating. His “very favorable” rating of 31% in the 65+ group is more than 10 points better than the other shortlisters in the Rasmussen survey (again, save Rice). Jindal did well, too, with a 44/28, as did Pawlenty with a 40/30 and Portman at 37/26, but Ryan’s draw among seniors outpaced all of them. Ryan has plenty of room to be defined in either direction with 35% of voters overall not having an opinion, but that’s only true of 20% of seniors — and Ryan already has a majority of them on his side.

Looks like the Ryan choice was both bold and pragmatic. It still means that Romney and Ryan have to aggressively push to define Ryan themselves, rather than allow the media or the Obama team do it first.

Update: Commenter Florah Duh reminds me that seniors actually liked Ryan’s plan best, according to a Gallup poll in 2011:

A new Gallup/USA Today poll contains a counterintuitive finding: the age group most receptive to House Budget Chair Paul Ryan‘s plan to deal with the budget – seniors.

The poll finds 48 percent of seniors (those 65 and over) support Ryan’s plan over President Obama‘s plan, while 42 percent back the president.

That’s the highest total among the age groups tested – a 47 percent plurality between the ages of 50 and 64 backed Ryan, and a 45 percent plurality of those between 30-49 backed Ryan. But young voters overwhelmingly sided with Obama by a 23-point margin, 53 to 30 percent.

Maybe that’s because seniors knew better than to believe that the current trajectory would protect their benefits in anything but the short run.

Questions:

1) At what age must one be to be considered a Senior?

2) What percentage of the voting public are seniors?

3) How likely are Seniors to vote compared to other age groups?

Okay, so why are we playing around with voter ID laws that will make it difficult for some seniors to vote? I know my elder relative is a lifelong conservative and she does not have the proper form of ID to vote now. Luckily she has someone, me to take her to get the proper ones, but what about those who don’t have anyone, and WANT to vote against Obama?

The Truth will set you free...just tell them the truth about Obama’s “little blue pills” for seniors and how OBAMA IS the WORST President for every citizen, especially seniors in this country. Hammer Obama on “his” economic disaster, lay out the plan to help this nation get FISCALLY back on track, and hit those swing states HARD! I feel more confident about Romney with his picking Ryan...many people may feel pleasantly surprised 2 years from now (it’s going to take time to stop the boat before we can even change course...)

Romney campaign - let Ryan be Ryan. Get him out in front of the camera. His words are believeable because he believes them himself. People will get that. And it will make the Dems’ strident and hateful attacks all the more ridiculous and off-putting.

On another thread yesterday, based on this same survey, I stated that I doubted enough people know of Ryan, to produce the pro and con percentages reported in the lead article on this thread.

In the article it says 25% did not like Ryan and 39% did.  That's 64%.  Not so fast...

Later yesterday, I ran into this.

In a poll taken earlier this week by CNN, 54 percent of respondents said they didn’t know enough to form an opinion, good or bad, about the congressman, first elected to the House in 1998 at the age of 28.
LINK

CNN thus reports that only 46% of the populace knows enough about Ryan to form an opinion.  How did the folks who produced the lead article on this thread come up with a group of 64% that knew enough about him to form an opinion?  Are the writers of this article making the case CNN's figures were off by 18%?

Okay, so why are we playing around with voter ID laws that will make it difficult for some seniors to vote? Luckily she has someone, me Jesse Jackson, to take her to get the proper ones, but what about those who don’t have anyone, and WANT to vote FOR Obama?

Just changing a few words changes the whole argument. Liberals WANT loose voter ID laws, precisely because it aids in voter fraud.

You said "so why are we playing around with voter ID laws that will make it difficult for some seniors to vote?"

Voting is a right and a RESPONSIBILITY. Some things in life are just a little bit difficult. For those who truely care about this country, getting proper voter ID shouldn't be considered THAT difficult.

On the other hand, those who EXPECT OTHERS to take care of their every WANT and NEED, view any and every slight inconvenience as "difficult". It's those that liberals prey on. Either to vote for them, or to FAIL at their rights and responsibilities, thus making it easier to commit voter fraud.

So....Who do you want voting? Somebody who's WILLING to go through the "difficulty" of getting proper ID, or someone who THINKS its "too difficult" to get proper ID, and that voting should be easier than getting a welfare check?

“Seniors” are not of one mind, nor are they short-sighted enough to place their own personal self-interest above what is best for the nation (even if you accept that Romney-Ryan are “bad for seniors”). This age group includes many of the greatest generation and their children (boomers) and everyone in between WWII and VietNam who grew up with traditional values and have seen what has happened since they have been largely abandoned.

Democrats cannot help but put each voter in a category and then conclude they will vote in a predictable way. I believe we will see that “senior” (however you define them) are going to put Country First and not just react like trained rats who feel their food pellets are being taken away.

All we need to do is remind seniors that Obamacare cuts $500 billion from Medicare.

I've never met the senior who couldn't figure out how to get a voter ID.

Reminds me of the story about the Texas woman (liberal) who flew to Washington DC to testify that it was too difficult for her to find a place to get an ID in her Texas home town. The only people stupid enough to believe that a woman who was smart enough fly to Washington to testify was too stupid to find a DMV office was the press. They actually bought it until they noticed thousands of people rolling on the floor laughing at them...

I'm a senior - I know seniors - and the story about seniors not being able to get a voter ID is a lie. Dems go out to nursing homes and sign up people who can't talk or remember their names -they do it because when democrats commit voter fraud they VOTE THE PEOPLE WHO DON'T SHOW UP. The 'dead' are voted as an accidental byproduct of the way dems cheat.

In the old days dem 'poll workers' would take a stack of punch cards ( of the people who didn't show up) and put an ice pick over the chad area they wanted punched and hit it with a hammer. A few hundred chads would drop out - and those folks - people who stayed home for whatever reason - would be counted as votes for democrats.

I'm sure the New York Times will be able (with the 'help' of the DNC) to find some seniors to interview who can't figure out a way to get an photo ID, and 'salt of the earth' types etc... but it'll essentially be a lie...

Here's where you and I come in. I want to contact Tea Party organizations, 912 Patriots groups, Freedomworks and Americans for Prosperity, and get them involved in something VERY IMPORTANT, and I hope you will do the same. It will be up to us to make sure seniors are registered to vote, that they get the transportation to the polls, that they have a flyer in their hand with the talking points on who Paul Ryan is, what he stands for, his policies as it pertains to Medicare, and the removal of obomacare. Ryan is solid, likeable and articulate..and he has a sound fiscal budget and a plan of action...he's an excellent choice.

The conservative organizations I've listed above have to start working on issues..and not just rallies. We need to organize a grid within our neighborhoods and contact seniors to inform them and offer them assistance and a handbill with the facts about what Paul Ryan can do for seniors...there are seniors living in independent apartments, assisted living, single family homes, and they need to be contacted. There are seniors living in independent living apartments with secure entry provisions, making it impossible to go door to door to instruct and inform seniors. It will be up to the seniors living in the above mentioned facilities to make contact with their neighbors and pass the information on. I encourage everyone to contact your local Tea Party group, 912 Project group, Freedomworks and Americans for Prosperity groups and tell them we need their help to reach an important group of voters who need our help, and we certainly needs theirs as well...this country needs their help, many of these seniors are veterans...survivors of the “greatest generation”

What do you say folks...let's give these folks our help...is this doable?

I totally agree with you...

If you have a relative/neighbor/friend who doesn't have the proper forms of ID with which to vote, HELP THEM BY TAKING THEM TO THE OBTAIN THESE FORMS AND GET THEM REGISTERED. This is no arm chair war we're fighting, we have to get up off our behinds, show some initiative and help out others who need it. Don't suck up that BS that ID’s are unnecessary and/or difficult to obtain. Get out there and get one, and help others who need help to do the same.

Right, your senior has no ID on which to base her Medicare card. She can make it in to get her benefits and see the doctgor, but can’t make it over to DMV to register and get a state ID. What ever happened to requesting an absentee ballot. Harry Reid said that the best lifeline for those abandoned seniors is their junk mail.

This is TOTAL BS and it needs exposure.
