Israel texts to warn of missile strikes

A nationwide SMS system for warning the public of an imminent missile attack was being tested in Israel on Sunday as new intelligence on a possible strike on Iran was leaked.

With front page stories in two papers suggesting Tehran had made progress towards the manufacture and assembly of a nuclear warhead, Israel's Home Front Command began final tests of a public warning system which is expected to be operational by September.

"The Home Front Command will today start conducting nationwide testing of the 'Personal Message' alert system, which will end on Thursday," said a statement indicating that SMS texts in Hebrew, Arabic, English and Russian would be sent to subscribers on Israel's three main networks: Cellcom, Pelephone and Orange.

The idea is that the SMS system could be used to warn the population of an imminent missile attack by Iran or Lebanon's Hezbollah militia, which could become a reality if Israel decides to mount a pre-emptive military strike on nuclear facilities in Iran.

When the blow comes it will be unexpected and sudden—I do not think the USA can keep out of it—our people will be attacked—maybe more attacks in the US herself. This will be the war to end all wars. The us needs to think of ways to pull our citizens out of Israel is it looks like a bloodbath. Next seven days should be most dangerous—or so my Ouija Board says....

With all of the cellphones around, that would be a critical system to have...as long as cell towers still existed.

While its a national system, it would be interesting if other people in the world could sign up for those alerts. Imagine sitting in a Chili’s restaurant in Podunk, SC, when the balloon goes up. You get a text saying Israel is being attacked. Talk about being on the edge of history.

I just wonder if Iran has a supply of heavy water because it can be use as a moderator in a reactor with natural uranium from which plutonium can be extracted. No enrichment required.
