Will Ryan Help Obama Win Jewish Votes?
Jewish World Review ^ | Aug 13, 2012 | Jonathan Tobin

Posted on 08/13/2012 5:02:39 AM PDT by expat1000

After Mitt Romney announced his choice for vice president, the consensus among Democrats is all they have to do to win in November is to mention one word: Medicare.

....First, those Jewish voters who are most vulnerable to Mediscare tactics were already going to vote for Obama. If you are the sort of person who truly believes the Republicans are going to throw Bubbe over the cliff, you probably were never sufficiently concerned about Obama's pressure on Israel and unwillingness to confront Iran to cross over to the GOP. The minority of American Jews who consider Israel's security to be a major influence on their votes are not going to be so easily bulldozed by the Mediscare routine. Voters who believe the president will sell out Israel are not the most receptive audience for a Democratic campaign based on the idea that Romney and Ryan will sell out the elderly.

So, basically, older jewish voters are only in it for themselves and don’t care about the good of the country or of Israel? Sounds about right.

Democrats are trying to set the stage for death panels to kill off old people. The dem you quoted is doing just that... Would you be equally awed if he had said, "college students ONLY care about their OWN financial well being.....not their grandmothers or their grandfathers".

Let's leave class warfare and generational hatred to the Democrats - they specialize in pitting groups against each other..

I guess this didn't fit into your pre-conceived ideas therefore you ignored it:

And there is another possibility that nobody on the left is prepared to even consider: a lot of those Jewish grandmothers and grandfathers who care about Israel may just decide they like Ryan a lot more than Obama.

Notwithstanding that, there is the old adage (I'm paraphrasing) that the young are concerned about universal values, middle-aged about families, and the old about themselves. I think there is a lot of truth to that regardless of religion.

I don't understand why Jewish Americans are so blind in their voting patterns when it comes to supporting Democratic politicians.

Blacks and Hispanics I can understand to a point, they are concerned primarily about the almighty handout.

Democrats are likely to be anti Semitic and are likely to stab Israel in the back while at the same time supporting the interests of Islamic despots around the globe.

The Obama administration has proven itself to be a huge supporter of Palestinian causes and has treated Netinyahu with disdain.

I hope my Jewish friends open their eyes soon!!!

Read “Ethnic America” by Thomas Sowell. It explains a lot. I don’t think the Jewish Vote will ever suddenly go Republican. But I think what will happen, and IS happening, is a gradual peeling away of more and more Jewish voters, particularly religious Jews and Orthodox Jews.

Right now, those Jews to whom Jewishness is a cultural heritage rather than a faith based belief, will remain in the Democrat camp.

Look, every group cares about themselves first...

Young people care about young people, old people about old people, Jews about Jews, Christians about Christians... That said, plenty of Christians care about Jews, Jews care about the young and the elderly, young people care about grandparents - all combinations of caring are true...

That whole manta about ‘only caring about’ is silly.

Our job as Republicans is to work for what’s best for the country. And that includes standing with the ONLY democracy in the Middle East - Israel. We stand with Israel because it’s the right thing to do - not NOT NOT because local Jews in this country vote with us. We’re not going to get the black vote either, but we’ll do right by the black community ... we’ll try to ‘do right’ by all Americans - regardless of how they vote.

I don't know if you caught this Sultan Knish article: www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2915503/posts

Abortion as a Liberal Jewish value has been a stunning success. In New York City, where Sanger first set up shop, 74 percent of all Jewish children are members of the traditionalist Orthodox religious group. Liberal Jews are already panicking over the prospect of a future Jewish population in New York City that is staunchly conservative and religious.

A recent survey of New York City Jews also shows a nearly even split between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama. 46 percent of New York Jews are planning to vote against Obama, and a majority of New York City Jews think that Romney would be better at fixing the economy than B.O. But it is only to be expected that the group for whom abortion isn't a Jewish value would come to outnumber the group for whom abortion is a Jewish value.

They will support the Democrats. For secular American Jews, who get their values from sitcoms and late night comics, the degradation of the culture—homosexual “rights”, unrestricted subsidized abortion, limits on the religious freedom of Christians—trumps the economy. And they no longer care at all about Israel. Their voting impact is minimal and, although their money is important, its always gone to Democrats. This conversation is a waste of time.

Thank you for that link.

In many ways, the liberal Jewish voting block mirrors “Cafeteria Catholics” and liberal Protestants. While Strict Catholics and Funadamentalist Protestants mirror Orthodox Jews in their values, voting records and world views.

Jews DESPISED Sarah Palin. Romney/Ryan are guaranteed at least a 10% boost on the Jewish vote this time around without her, plus Obama’s horrid record on Israel. That is worth about 500,000 votes (based on 5 million Jewish voters, and they ALL vote). Moreover, the four states with the largest Jewish populations account for 127 of the 270 Electoral votes needed to secure the presidency.

Jews DESPISED Sarah Palin.

Now that's either a foolish statement, or the Jews who actually did despise her are fools themselves. Do you think that Jews should despise her because she owns guns and hunts moose, as no less an authority on the issue as black Democrat Congressman Alcee Hastings claimed?

I'm Jewish and I liked Palin and still do. I'd be confident that just about all Jewish conservatives would agree with me. Frankly, I can't see any sane reason whatsoever why being Jewish should cause someone to dislike her, as if she were a female version of Adolf Hitler. The fact of the matter is that Palin is definitively pro-Israel and, if anything, is philo-semitic.

There's nothing antisemitic or anti-Israel about Paul Ryan, either. If there was, you can bet that the Jewish Left would be out there talking about it already.

That is worth about 500,000 votes (based on 5 million Jewish voters, and they ALL vote).

5 million Jewish voters has to be an overestimate, because there are between 5.2 and 5.8 million Jews in the country - depending on your source - and at least a million are probably under 18 or too elderly or incapacitated to vote.

Moreover, the four states with the largest Jewish populations account for 127 of the 270 Electoral votes needed to secure the presidency.

Of the four states with the largest Jewish populations, two of them, CA and NY , are so overwhelmingly 'Rat that the Jewish vote isn't going to make a difference in the presidential election outcomes there. Only in Florida, and possibly Pennsylvania and Ohio and a few smaller states, will the Jewish vote possibly be decisive in a very close statewide election.

I've been absolutely baffled by not just the disagreement, but outright hatred displayed by many Jews, especially Jewish women, towards Sarah Palin. When I'd ask about it, I never received any sort of a thought out answer. It was visceral, mostly driven by the merciless hammering of the media, as well as the so called entertainers. On more than one occasion, I got the "She's so dumb she said she can see Russia from her back yard." They didn't believe it was actually Tina Fey until I showed them on YouTube. Then, it was "funny."

I think a part of it was she was young, vivacious, intelligent, and independent. I think that many women, "city girls" especially, were put off by her love of guns, fishing, hunting, and the outdoors, as being "unlady-like."

I think another reason for most liberals' vitriol towards Sarah was her stance on abortion, her acceptance of Bristol's out of wedlock birth, and most importantly, her decision to have Trigg, a baby born with birth defects. She made the conscious decision to have that baby, showing that she REALLY stands by her pro-life values, and I think that for most liberals, it shames them. And that shame leads to their hatred.

Be honest, you're amongst friends, I vote three times, you probably vote more, so of course a Jewish population of 5.5 million or so produces 5 million voters. And that's not counting the dead.

More seriously. Perhaps the "Jewish" vote could be significant in a close race, but it's important to note that in those "big" states you mention, Florida, PA, Ohio the Jewish population are 3.4%, 2.3% and 1.3%. In a close race could that be significant, sure, but to focus on it from a political perspective kind of missed the point, the non Jewish populations are 96.6%, 97.3%, and 98.7%. Should Romney lose a close election, ant those are the states, it's not really about the Jews though we'll read that. BTW, should Nevada be in play, 2.8% there. Not sure it could be an issue anywhere else.

I am too, and I have never seen such venom and animus from my relatives towards any candidate for any office that they unleashed on Palin. There are two I still will not speak to, one due to her email campaign to our extended family bashing Palin, and my nasty replies to her. Rosh Hashana dinner 2008 was a nasty affair with extreme political division. This year will be totally different. Already the relatives desperately pimping Obama in '08 are either oddly silent, or grumbling about his Israel backstabbing. This is a real opportunity for Romney if he knows how to seize it.

Pamela Geller of the Atlas Shrugs blog was a member of Jews for Palin.

However, I think most Jews are against Sarah Palin and not for good reasons either. The adoption of Liberalism as a religious faith by many of my co religionists has not been good for America or for us Jews ourselves.

I think that many women, "city girls" especially, were put off by her love of guns, fishing, hunting, and the outdoors, as being "unlady-like."

It's a matter of cultural differences and parochialism and narrow-mindedness on the part of those "city girls." Even "city people" should be able to fathom that Americans, even women, from the wide open spaces of the rural and small-town West, into which Palin was born and raised, commonly enjoy those pastimes without having any sinister motives attached to them.

I think another reason for most liberals' vitriol towards Sarah was her stance on abortion, her acceptance of Bristol's out of wedlock birth, and most importantly, her decision to have Trigg, a baby born with birth defects.

There seems to be a big gap between what liberal women, and especially liberal Jewish women, say and do about abortion. I've met a number of these types who will rant about "a women's right to choose." They can speak out oh so vociferously. But, to the best of my knowledge, I've never met a Jewish woman in my life whom I know to have actually had an elective abortion. Maybe you could explain this phenomenon.

Nevada too.

Yes, I'm aware of the increasing Jewish population of Nevada and so is the Republican Jewish Coalition.

SJackson posted that the Jewish population of Nevada is 2.8%, which, because Jews are older statistically than the general population and tend to vote more, means that the percentage of Nevada's votes cast by Jews may be 4 or 5%. So yes, could make a difference in a tight race, but I think we're only talking 6 electoral votes there.

People who complain about the small percentages of Jews voting for Republicans should keep in mind that we also vote with our purse as well.

Sheldon Adelson, the Lauder family, and many, many more down to the Jewish small biz owners and families donate a LOT of money to conservative PACs and Republicans.

Any Jew (my people) who are living with all senses functioning must vote for Romney, (I am not naive - I know the majority will not). I am a Conservative, Republican Jew and I supported Palin - I like seeing her haul around a 12-gauge shotgun, does not bother me in the least.
Palin is not Presidential material but given a few more years she may be. Right now we must support R&R.

You state there are between “...5.2 and 5.8 million Jews in America”. The question is, are the majority capable of stepping outside of the knee-jerk reflex “Republicans are greedy Capitalists and remind me of Nixon” stereotypes? I think not. We have a lot of work in front of us.
