California is the Golden State, home to surfing, Hollywood and Silicon Valley, but it appears likely to become something else entirely for GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan: a political punching bag.
Romney took a shot at California last week when he told an Iowa crowd that he likened the nation's most populous state - and the world's eighth largest economy - to Greece, the international symbol of fiscal irresponsibility.
"Entrepreneurs and business people around the world and here at home think that at some point America is going to become like Greece or like Spain or Italy, or like California - just kidding about that one, in some ways," Romney told a laughing crowd.
Tea Party darling Sarah Palin, the 2008 GOP vice presidential candidate, went one better - lauding Romney's choice of Ryan on her Facebook page with an eye-popping 1,200-word roundhouse punch at California.
"When I think about the direction our country is rapidly drifting in, I can't help but look at California as a cautionary tale," Palin wrote to her Facebook followers. "The Golden State once boasted the entrepreneurial innovation of Silicon Valley - the American creative engine."
Palin then praised Romney's choice of Ryan and said that, by comparison, "Obama's vision for America will make the rest of the country look like California, minus the beautiful scenery and warm weather."
She ticked off a litany of nightmares in the Democrat-controlled state: "$100 billion taxpayer-funded bullet trains," "out-of-control environmentalists," a government that is "hostile" to small-business job creators, "permanent high unemployment" and an "abysmal real estate market."

Leatherback sea turtle in line for honor as the official marine reptile of California.
Truth hurts sometimes.
Seems its more a shot at the pathetic leadership who keep getting elected in CA.
Honoring sea turtles...
The libs who rule CA like the fact most people in that state have no earthly clue as to the fiscal dungheap they`re heading to. They might better understand the looming disaster if someone explains it to them in Spanish.
What leadership ?
Truth hurts Cali— I should know I live here.

California may be a financial and cultural basket case, but it has an enormous block of electoral votes; I wonder if there’s any chance the Republicans could win them...?
I wonder if theres any chance the Republicans could win them...?
Arnold won so I guess it is possible. He was the one who ruined California though so I can understand the distrust of Republicans. Maybe a conservative should get a shot.
California was screwed before the terminator came along.
Why not focus that attention on Cook County, Illinois?
Democrats have controlled this worker’s paradise for decades and look what they’ve done for the people. We’ve got all of California’s idiotic regulations, political corruption and high taxes, but none of their great weather.
The economic and political climate of Cook County is Obama’s model for the nation.
If the Republicans want to show how screwed up California is they need merely to point at Californias politicians. Pelosi, Boxer ,Feingold, Waters, Pig man Waxman, Babs Lee,and a host of other Democrats.
“......Arnold won so I guess it is possible. He was the one who ruined California...........”
He was the latest in a list of Leftist screwups we’ve had “ruling” California. Pat Brown, Jerry Brown, Gray Davis, Schwarzenegger, Jerry Brown now again. I imagine the latest round of Jerry Brown was the idiots that weren’t here before, or that don’t remember must have thought he had experience. YUP! LOTS of experience screwing up this State. The other major factor is the quality of the lies out of Brown are very good.
So, which one of us freepers gets to help you pack? Somebody get funfan a job in another state. A right-to-work state preferably. :)
I think that's coming later. Ryan, if used correctly, can hammer on why the other midwest states (Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, and even Michigan to a degree) are doing a lot better in comparison to Illinois.
And point to California cities filing bankruptcy -- democrat controlled cities (as all the blighted cities across the U.S. are -- CONTROLLED by progressives -- for generations).
