Why Did Ted Cruz Win the Texas Primary?
Townhall.com ^ | August 14, 2012 | Phyllis Schlafly

Posted on 08/14/2012 5:53:40 AM PDT by Kaslin

To the surprise of the pundits, pollsters and predictors who think they are smarter than the rest of us, Ted Cruz won the nomination for U.S. Senator from Texas. A few months ago, he rated only 2 percent in the polls, but in the primary runoff, he coasted to a 14-point win.

His victory wasn't because he had more money or more prestigious endorsements or more valuable connections or more political experience. Maybe he defeated the establishment-backed candidate because he touched some hot-button issues that the grassroots care about but are ignored or even belittled by the mainstream media.

Take, for example, property rights. Most Americans thought our property rights were secure under the mantle of the U.S. Constitution, until they were shaken by the widely unpopular 2005 U.S. Supreme Court Kelo decision that authorized government to use eminent domain power to seize private property and give it to a private developer, if the new owner would be a bigger taxpayer.

Grassrooters and tea partiers have the old-fashioned notion that private property is a basic constitutional right and that publicly owned property is part of U.S. sovereignty and must not be handed over to the United Nations or other foreigners. Americans are naturally suspicious of the lengthy document called Agenda 21, adopted at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

The globalists didn't dare submit Agenda 21 as a treaty subject to U.S. Senate debate and vote, so they have been proceeding without public announcement to make deals with cities, counties and other local units of government. Claiming to promote "a more efficient and equitable world economy," the globalists' sales talk is wrapped in U.N. fantasies about sustainability, wilderness, climate change, land use, regulations to save the environment and global governance.

Translated into plain language, that means reducing the American standard of living and inducing us to transfer our wealth to foreign dictators who hate us. A globalist outfit called the International Council of Local Environmental Initiatives, usually referred to as ICLEI (pronounced ik-lay), has already lined up some U.S. cities to accept sustainability regulations.

Most Americans are rightly opposed to the U.N. dictating anything that interferes with U.S. property rights or uses of our land. The Republican National Committee voted unanimously to oppose Agenda 21 because it is a dangerous encroachment on U.S. freedoms and our private enterprise economy.

One of The New York Times' favorite pundits, Paul Krugman, tried to ridicule Ted Cruz about his criticism of Agenda 21 by blogging that Cruz "believes that there is a global plot, led by George Soros, to eliminate golf courses." Indeed, Cruz understands that Americans don't want George Soros (who has put big bucks behind this U.N. project) or any U.N. agency telling us how to use our own land.

ICLEI opposes paved roads (as a detriment to the expansion of the wilderness), and it would be no surprise if ICLEI went after golf courses. The "sustainability" freaks would argue that golf courses are a too-extravagant use of land and of water to keep the fairways green.

Immigration is another issue hot with the grassroots but ignored or distorted by the mainstream media and the so-called establishment. Immigration could be listed under many headings, including jobs, unemployment, rule of law, crime, American identity, sovereignty, foreign policy, and states' rights, and it surely is both a social and a fiscal issue.

Cruz has lined up on the side of those who want the rule of law not open borders, assimilation not amnesty. Thus, ending chain migration and reducing the numbers of immigrants until America does a better job of assimilating the millions of legal immigrants we have already welcomed into our country.

A third issue turned out to be an opportunity for Cruz to score points with the grassroots. Because Cruz boasts a compelling narrative about his Cuban heritage, his major opponent, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, challenged him to a Spanish-language debate.

Cruz wisely declined to fall into that trap. The American people support English as our national language and don't want politicians seeking our votes in any foreign language.

The mainstream media have been trying to pigeonhole the tea party crowd as people who are not smart enough to play on the national stage. It's probably been a big shock to some that Ted Cruz, a tea party favorite, is a graduate of Princeton and the Harvard Law School, clerked for Chief Justice William Rehnquist, and has argued nine cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Just another conservative who had to battle the leftist media and the milquetoast GOP establishment. This year is replete with conservatives who won by comfortable margins after “polling” close to the primary opponent (or in Wisconsin, the dems candidate).

That’s why I don’t believe the polls showing the race as close as it is - especially now that a genuine conservative is on the ticket.

Ted Cruz easily beat the Lt Governor David Dewhurst because of the incessant stupid ignorant “Chinese lawyer” negative ads by Dewhurst.

Besides Dewhurst is an old white rich guy establishment dude with no ideas -—kind of like our Senator John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchinson whose main accomplishment in life was as a cheer leader at UT!

and the Dewhurst campaign was flat-out sleezy right out of the gate. It was continuous attack ads against Cruz. It looked fishy from day one.

To be honest, I think Dewhurst shot his own foot off. His was genuinely the most ridiculous and underhanded campaign I’ve ever seen. The ads he ran were just indefensible.

I was always a Cruz supporter ... but never really disliked Dewhurst before this campaign. He’s to the left of me ... but a lot of people are to the left of me. If I disliked people for that, I’d hate everybody.

Dewhurst proved to a lot of people that he just wasn’t worthy of a Texas Senate seat.

Yep. Dewhurst campaigned like a Dem, so he lost like one.

Ted Cruz won because he actually BELIEVES what he says and the other guy did not!

That is the simple fact!

I have worked as a Texas election official for twenty five years and I have never seen a run-off turn out as spirited and large as the one for Ted Cruz. After looking at the totals on the day end tapes we run in the seven precincts I watched over Cruz beat Dewhurst 60% to 40%.

Modern polling data is published to shape the electorate’s opinion, and to effect turn out. Like they say the only poll that counts is the one on election day. The media and ruling elites are using these polls to discourage us Tea types from actively politicking and shaping the the agenda towards our founder’s beliefs, screw ‘em.

Because Dewdrop is a lying SOB and his adds proved it?

Because Dewdrop couldn’t think his way out of a paper bag and proved it in the debates?

Because Dewdrop says he is a conservative when it is convenient?

Because Dewdrop loves sanctuary cities and if he had his way there would be a state income tax in Texas?

Because Cruz outsmarted Dewdrop at just about every turn?

Because some people are finally asking why someone would spend $24,000,000 of his own money for less than a $200,000 a year job?

Don’t get me completely wrong. I don’t like lawyers but once more we chose the lesser of two weevils.

Dewdrop is to my left but so are a whole lot of people, I don’t like them much at all either.

The dirty Political Ads of David Dewhurst, drove voters to vote for Ted Cruz, plus he had grassroots Tea Party support.

Obama is using the same dirty Political Ads against Romney/Ryan, and this will drive base and Independent voters to Romney/Ryan on November 6th. Romney/Ryan also have grassroots Tea Party support...........

Indeed! Bears repeating!

Because he cares so much for his constituency? Country? /s

Ted Cruz won because Texans are fed with lying career politicians. Doo hurst outspent Cruz about 3 - 1 and still lost by 13%. Those negative ads hurt more than they helped.

Of course, because he cares so much about his constituency and his country.

Silly me, I should have thought of that. After all, he is a brilliant businessman and built Falcon Seaboard. At least he says he did and said it repeatedly in the debate. “I built a company from nothing.”

Never mind that is was actually a company based on a company previously built by his partner.... “ In 1981, Dewhurst and Mr. Ted Law re-established Falcon Seaboard, a Texas-based diversified energy and investments company in Houston that Mr. Law had founded in 1935.”

Good job Dewdrop.

I see that he also married a Bivins the second time around. Never hurts to marry into the family who owns interests in one of the largest ranches in Texas with some of the best minerals in the Panhandle on it.

Again, good job Dewdrop.

Correction to an error I made, he isn’t a lawyer but he does not say what his degree is from University of Arizona.. he did get a batchelors degree in something though he does not seem to be proud enough of it to say what. However he is proud to say he played basketball and belonged to Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. Yahoo.

With any luck he will vanish from the political scene and return to breeding angus cattle and riding horses. I hope he does not get hurt while engaged in either activity though one sounds more hazardous than the other.
