I’ve been thinking about getting a job using my CDL after 0bama gets unelected. The best idea seems to be becoming part of a custom gain cutting crew so I don’t hardly ever have to drive downtown in some large city.

If I could work again the only way I would drive a rig would be either by the hour or salary. Something like point to point drop and return trip type of deal or a local point to point like what you are talking about I think.

When I drove I barely broke even on my living expenses and I didn't own the rig. Being gone for two weeks and sometime five-six of those days were spent sitting somewhere 500 plus miles away waiting on another load. I took a load to L.A. one time and I swore never again. It was the hardest place to get a load out of even with a reefer. Most loads outgoing were produce. I only got paid by miles driven.

BTW the two places I hated taking loads into was anywhere coastal New Jersey or within a 50 mile radius of NYC.

My b-i-l was an owner/operator, he made deliveries in the 48 contiguous states. His last delivery to N.Y.C. he had to go inside a business for 5 minutes, he asked a meter maid if he could double park his rig while he went inside for the 5 minute max time, she told him to go ahead. He was inside for less than 5 minutes, when he came back, he had a parking ticket on his wind shield, his side window had been smashed and somebody had stolen his brief case. After that he refused all deliveries to N.Y.C.

The few times I delivered to NYC I had a rule to never go in after dark. I would park in Allentown, PA and wake up about 4:00am and drive on in. I was driving back from a load up to Rhode Island to points south one night and hit NYC about midnight. I missed the G.W Bridge. Next place I remember was Harlem. I didn't let the wheels stop turning till I was out of Dodge LOL. I never felt safe in NYC day or night but I sure wasn't parking there to sleep.

I did have a security system though for when I slept. A good strong string that was tied to both doors and wrapped tight around my air horn cord.

I live in an area served by a VFD. It's better than 50-50 odds that they will be the first responders. That means they come from their home. On my Moms mailbox I have it on both sides and reflective. On the house would do no good as it sits off the road a bit. Besides it's the only house on that side of the road for half a mile. I have it on both sides of my mailbox as well just in case they miss it. They have to come back by again they ain't got no choice LOL. They can't see my house from the mailbox though.

I also have some radio code info for them to use forced entry in event of emergency call and check the front bedroom. It's a simple and safe way to inform them someone disabled is inside possibly alone without anyone else being the wiser. I also had the 911 Director enter it in the computer. My wife is an incomoplete quad and sometimes I need to run errands. She can use the phone to reach me, my mom whos close by, neighbor, or 911.
