The boat went undetected, but we know it was in the Gulf for a month?

(1) The Russians really weren't there, but they told us they were to freak us out.

(2) The Russians really were there, we didn't know, and later they told us they were to freak us out.

(4) The Russians really weren't there, but we told them they were, which really freaked them out.

Very stealthy to name that file “Skeptical-Cat.”

(GeorgeWashingtonsGhost) One would hope that we really DID know they were there but want them to think we didn’t know (Misinformation).

(Me) If we knew they were there, there would be no reason to let them know we could watch it, so you may be right.

LOL, that's like not raising an alarm when thieves have broken into your house, lest they become aware of the presence of an anti-theft device (which failed).

Poor analogy, assuming we actually were monitoring them and didn't let on. Misinformation is a common tool nations use to keep enemies and "frienemies" in the dark about their abilities.

Not when it involves a nuclear submarine which is capable of destroying several cities at once. A sane nation wouldn’t be dumb enough to let such a threat lurk so close to home. Remember, anti-missile systems won’t have the time to react when the launch occurs in home territory.

You say that as if there's an immediate threat the Russians will launch a surprise attack. They won't, because they have no reason to, and because we could still get our nukes off in plenty of time to make MAD a reality for them.

This is the same cat and mouse game we've been playing with each other for decades.

A sane nation wouldn’t be dumb enough to let such a threat lurk so close to home.

A sane nation isn't going to start a nuclear war, IE start a war that will result in millions of their own children being wiped out, for no reason.

Remember, anti-missile systems won’t have the time to react when the launch occurs in home territory.

All the more reason to not let them in on the fact that we could detect and destroy one of their super silent subs before it could launch, if it came to that.

Assuming that is what happened of course. I can understand the concern some here have expressed that we may not have detected it. I agree only that it's possible we knew it was there and didn't reveal that we could detect them.

If the submarine was a rogue (hijacked, say by Muslim Chechans), MAD no longer applies. For a very plausible scenario as the above, willfully letting a nuke sub into a nations underpants would be a phenomenally idiotic risk to take, for no real gains whatsoever.

Were they checking out MacDill AFB?

OK, that was a good point. I guess our leaders would have to count on our intelligence agencies to get the correct information to them to make the right call.

In the mean time, if this was a failure or weakness in our detection systems, I only hope our military is working on fixing it.

This disgracefuland dangerous incident, plus Obama’s cryptic promise to Putin, plus his open border policy, plus his infiltration of the US gov with Muslim Brotherhood agents, plus his Muslim immigration policy, spells doom for the homeland.
