As a result of the Midwestern drought, global prices for corn and other staple foods have increased dramatically. Corn prices are up by half since May, while soybean prices are up by over a quarter. With the drought only worsening, traders are beginning to talk about something entirely unprecedented: double-digit prices for a bushel of corn. Meanwhile, under the president's environmental mandates, 50% of this year's crop is being burned up to produce ethanol.
When global grain prices rise, it is always the poor who suffer the most. Of course, Americans, who spend an average of 18% of their income on food for home consumption, will be hurt as well. But for the poor in countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Ethiopia, increased grain prices are a matter of life and death.
In fact, almost one billion people worldwide will go to bed hungry tonight, half of them children. On average, 5 million children die of starvation each year before reaching the age of five. This year, that number will be much higher. For poor children at the margin, a large increase in grain prices is nothing less than a death sentence.
Death by starvation is not a pretty sight. It is the sight of a three-year-old child, sitting on the bare earth, listless, her belly swollen, too exhausted even to swat the flies from her face. There is an empty bowl lying there on the ground next to her, but she pays no attention to it. Even at three years of age, she knows what her future holds in store. She stares out into the distance, completely impassive, hopeless, and resigned. That is what the President's ethanol mandate means for children in the world's poorest countries.

If the poor suffer it is their fault. If they had purchased grain futures as a hedge, the food price rise would be of no real consequence.
So why aren’t these people farming?
And blacks, who support Obama passionately, suffer the most.
I agree wholeheartedly with the title of this article..
So, lets ask a simple question...
Why is the price of grain rising?
Cost of fuel (regulations and taxes)
Cost of equipment (regulations and taxes)
Cost of compliance with regulations
Cost of additional taxes
Cost for reduction of purchasing power of the dollar
The answer is simple... the government has done it
and the republicans own the house of representatives
fancy that
And which of these countries, and others just like them, don't hate the USA? We are supposed to feel bad that we can't give their poor food while their leaders steal most of the aid and order a new fleet of luxury cars for themselves.
More BS crap, E-15 gas (4gal mandated minimum purchase) is due out soon, and that’ll eat-up even more acres of corn and grain. Acres which could and should be going to food production, domestically and for exports. And it’ll ruin hundreds/thousands/millions more engines. Heck, they can just eat some bark and grass, instead, like the NORKS.
For decades Americans have shown the world how to grow more food than they can possibly eat.
So much food that they can BURN it to heat their houses, power their carS AND STILL HAVE TOO MUCH GRAIN!
They have rejected our ideas and methods.
There is a price for stubborn stupidity.
LET THE BASTARDS STARVE TO DEATH.
Everytime you fill your tank you kill an innocent somewhere in the world. Maybe we should all buy Dolts from nobama, no?
0bama's motto: "Let 'em eat dog".
The price of the produced food, however, is necessarily higher. Yes, we can produce more food, but the average Third World peasant does not produce enough value to be able to buy the food he needs to stay alive. Nor can the West afford to subsidize them any longer. We are broke.
CORRECTION: ‘When global OIL prices rise, it is always the poor who suffer the most.”
Which is WHY grain prices rise.... M O R O N
Did you even read my post?
We showed them how to produce MORE food than they could possibly eat.
They gave us the finger.
F ‘em, and LET THAT BASTARDS STARVE, I WANT TO BURN OUR GRAIN TO WARM MY HOUSE.
Drill Baby Drill
Obama has brought us severe drought and the world starvation unlike anything that our world has seen in history. Only when he is out of office will our farmland see rains and only them will the children of Africa fill their bellies as they did prior to Obama seizing office.
If the poor were the least bit creative, they would find a way to drink ethanol instead of eating .... but wait, ethanol is poison .... possibly a way to reduce the population from 6 billion to 1 billion desired by the progressives.
It does make one wonder what happens to the tons and tons we send overseas?
> possibly a way to reduce the population from 6 billion to 1 billion desired by the progressives....
Hmmm. I don’t think that they want 3rd World populations to die out.
Just a certain ethnic class...
Count me as one that is appalled at your attitude. I’m sorry, but the utterly horrific deaths of innocents, even by the hand and policies of tyrants, is not something to gloat about.
Please...no lectures on what they “deserve.”
Yes...I read your post. Mine was intentional sarcasm about the general issue.
