St. Louis police respond after crowd swarms church for rumored food vouchers
St. Louis Post-Dispatch ^ | Aug 15, 2012 | staff reports

ST. LOUIS • Police were called to a church in St. Louis this morning for crowd control after an unexpectedly large crowd gathered on rumors of applying for $500 food vouchers.
.
.
Two ambulances arrived to treat a diabetic woman as well as an older woman who fell in the street. Police had to put crime scene tape across the front door of the church to discourage people from trying to get in.

Some members of the crowd became irate after they were sold fake applications for the vouchers.

Several attendees said they had been waiting in line for their chance at the voucher since last night and as early as 4 a.m. Once the church doors opened, the crowd rushed in.

Attendees were given applications for UPside Visa cards and were told they would receive a debit card in the mail that they must keep activated for $1 a month. The $500 food vouchers would arrive along with the cards, Walker said.
.
.
Church volunteer Mary Moore was surprised at the response.

"They rushed the building so hard, that (organizers) had to shut it down," she said. "Word of mouth got around and it got out of proportion."

Sonya Gray, 49, of Overland arrived at 8 a.m. and decided against submitting an application after seeing the crowd.

"It's out of control," she said. "Nothing got organized. This is crazy."

Carla Webb, 50, of St. Louis, arrived at 7 a.m. and submitted an application. She was frustrated by the way organizers handled the event.

"They've got it totally disorganized," she said.

See! See! NGO's can't handle this kind of important wealth redistribution.

Only FedGov is smart enough and organized enough to run a scheme like this. If we only re-elect Barry for life, we'll all get food vouchers!

(Do I really need a /sarc tag?)

It’s pretty easy to discern who is there to get something for nothing.
I wonder what percentage of people there were truly in need of food.

Church volunteer Mary Moore was surprised at the response.

Why? Of course the scroungers are going to come running. "Free handout" is all they live for.

From the pictures, some of those present should have been in line for a free “Abersizer” exercise device (industrial strength). I really think “FREE” was the incentive for them to leave their chit apartments and their big screen tvs and go to the church.

Buying the applications should have been their first clue that something wasn't quite right. (Of course, people buy and sell food stamps all the time, so this is no surprise.)

I don't see any of them wearing rags. You'd think they'd buy food before they'd go shopping for new clothes.

There's a big difference between those in NEED and those in WANT. It looks like these people have been found wanting.

They should have announced that the new $250 Air Jordans were about to go on sale, 2 blocks down the street. It would be fascinating to to how many of these, “impoverished”, “hungry” people would have stayed around to try to get food vouchers, rather than join the new stampede to buy the $250 sneakers.

If they are not already, the cops should use these types of fake promotions to catch fugitives, scofflaws and illegals. Send them notices that they can pick up their “free” whatever, right next to the county jail and then round ‘em up.

Haha. Come for free money ... leave with less than you came with. Serves ‘em right.

Go to work.

Hmmm, I wonder if they'd get up that early to apply for a job?

Hunger doesn’t seem to be the problem. It’s interesting how they are upset at the people giving them free money, like they earned it by showing up.

I wonder who sold them the fake applications? Other Amish?

This story is so sad.
I wonder how many people wouldrushh the church if they were taking job applications.
Dependency is a drug. It’s so tragic.
