Editorial: Turn over Fast & Furious papers

Operation Fast and Furious is one of the worst law-enforcement scandals in American history. It began with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, a branch of the Justice Department, using a "gun walking" scheme to entice U.S. gun dealers – who are licensed by the government – to sell weapons to illegal buyers connected to Mexican drug cartels. The guns then were supposed to be tracked to the cartels' top leadership.

But the scheme backfired when guns sold during the operation were used to kill Border Patrol agent Brian Terry in 2010 and untold numbers of innocent Mexicans. Attorney General Eric Holder has refused to turn over crucial documents for an investigation by the House Oversight Committee, headed by Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista.

The House voted 258-95 on June 28 to hold Mr. Holder in contempt of Congress. To enforce that, on Monday the committee sued in federal court.

POLITICAL CARTOONS

45 cartoons on Ryan, Romney, and more

Mr. Holder and President Barack Obama contend the documents are protected by executive privilege. That position, however, doesn't make sense, John Eastman told us; he's a professor at Chapman University's law school. The House is asking for Justice Department communications. "But the White House is adamant it had no involvement in those communications," he said. "Which makes claiming executive privilege odd. They're claiming executive privilege for something they weren't involved in."

I have friends in California and Oregon who have never heard anything about the Fast and Furious scandal. News media just is not reporting on it. If this was a Republican scandal those involved would already be on trial for aiding in the murder of a Border Patrol agent.

That pretty much sums up the mental apathy of these two states, but I'll bet your friends can name Justin Bieber's latest hit or girlfriend, tell you what their favorite video game is and who Kim Khardashian is doing. There's no excuse to be an ignorant loser when social media and the internet can help anybody with a cell phone, a data plan and a curiosity to find out what's going on in the world. Expecting the old dinosaur media to tell you what's important is not what they are about anymore.

F&F is only one of the many scandals breaking as we are entering into the home run of the election season. Solyndra inquiry, now the inquiry involving the axing of the pensions of the non-union Delphi workers in favor of the unions.

The courts are going to be busy with perjury trials of many democrats (you’ll recall how giddy they were to go after Scooter Libby).

Re: Fast and Furious

What did Barack Obama know and when did he know it?

Curious that there are no “Woodwards” or “Bernsteins” this time around, eh?
