A Walpole baker appalled that welfare abuse now seems almost as American as apple pie is putting her whoopie pies where her mouth is in a dispute with the Braintree Farmers Market, refusing to take EBT cards for her baked treats." I dont think American taxpayers should be footing the bill for peoples pie purchases, said Andrea Taber, proprietor of the Ever So Humble Pie Co. in Walpole, who peddles her wares at the Braintree market on Fridays and now finds herself in the middle of the states raging fight over welfare benefits.

i guess she regards her ‘humble’ pies as luxury items
Moochelle Obama is a hypocrite. Didn’t she say that Americans need to eat healthier? Well, start with the welfare freeloaders. No free sweets for them on my dime!
It’s free! Swipe yo EBT.”
Good for her. No way food stamps should be used for anything other than the basics.
pie isn’t one of the four basic food groups? like potato chips, cheeseburgers, and ice cream?
She was on Howie Carr today for an hour. Her pie shop is 2 miles from me and I’m going over there this weekend.
Where my pie? LOL
Perhaps with your money, junk food is ok, but not with mine.
Everybody wants some pie...
Dear Ms. Taber,
I was sent the link to your businesses web page recently by a friend, and was most impressed that your website had messages of support in word and deed for our troops (25% off, God bless you!) admiring your support of our troops without knowing why he sent me the link.
But I did not know you were embroiled in a controversy about EBT cards (only finding out tonight) with the misuse of these types of entitlements being of great interest to me these past several months. I hear you have taken what I deem to be the appropriate stance, and will support you by purchasing your products wherever I can. (being a scratch pie-maker myself, I am always eager to test my fare against people who know what they are doing!)
I understand this has nothing to do with any kind of discrimination against people who are underprivileged, and everything to do with the appropriate use of government money, money which you have paid through your hard work in building your own business. I hope to meet you and shake your hand someday, as people in our world today seem to be as full of talk as they are empty of action.
If I can ever be of assistance in any show of public support for you, or financial help if you have legal difficulties for making this stand, do not hesitate to contact me via this email address. I may not be able to give much, if it comes to that, but I will give what I can in your support. I can't tell you how uplifting it is to see someone take a principled and correct stand, even to their own financial detriment.
And, since I live close enough...I hope to taste those pies soon!
There is a sign at the self check-out counter of my local store that says EBT card purchases are limited to $60 cash back.
So now they can buy their cigs, booze and weed.
She’s probably a couple of miles from my house, too. I’m going there!
Vacuum pack, freeze and ship in styrofoam core box...I’ll take three large ones...apple, cherry and peach.
I’ll supply the ice cream...
(in one swift motion, die-hard Republican owner snatches pie from Obama)
Die-Hard Republican Owner: "NO PIE FOR YOU!"
HEY! You forgot beer!
Andrea Taber, along with sons Daniel and Timothy, manufactures ready-to-bake.
Twenty-five years as a nurse had left the Sharon resident burnt out on the profession and casting about for a new career. She decided to focus on her lifelong love of baking, and in 1999, Taber began baking pies out of her kitchen as she made the transition from health care. In 2001 she decided to do her own thing, which led to the opening in 2002 of Ever So Humble Pie Co. in a century-old industrial building in East Walpole.
It was a big move, and a scary one. I could have made serious money (in nursing), but I was just burnt out, she said.
“Good for her. No way food stamps should be used for anything other than the basics.”
I know that McDonald’s does NOT allow EBT’s...but Burger King, Pollo Loco, Subway, jack in the box and the rest of these losers, they do.
My top 3 burger joints: In N out, Chick Fil A and Fatburger, they don’t., so I give my dough to them.
If I can ever be of assistance ...
Brought tears to my eyes. You are wonderful. We need to stick together and suppport each other.
Movement is happening here Folks.
Chick Fil A
Tea party wins.
Woman baker in Mass rejecting EBT cards
Caterer for Dems wearing I build my Business t-shirt.
The Internet Reformation marches on.
Don’t you need to sign up, register, and pay fess to accept EBT payments?
Let Michelle pay for their pies..
Interesting form of Atlas shrugging. It would be nice if more businesses followed her example. Imagine a nation-wide trend of business owners no longer accepting EBT cards.
Saw that happen today at a Walmart in Wyoming (traveling). Young kid with expensive Oregon State sports ware on buying a 97 cent pack of gum and got twenty dollars in change, cold cash using his welfare card.
What a crock of sh@t.
Howie Carr’s Podcast of the interview with the Baker, Andrea Taber.
She is sacrificing profit for principal. That is laudable in this day and age. That is very rare. It is a rare thing to see someone in a struggling business in a down economy turn down an opportunity to increase sales volume just out of moral principal. Amazing. She could be profiting off government money, yet she refuses.
I would call her “heroic”. Her sacrifice definitely has a nobility of purpose.
Subway food is healthy. I and my family eat there so much people think we are part of the staff.
Chicken places are healthy too.
Burgers and pies are full of fats, which give them their taste. However, pies are expensive to make and have to sell at a much higher cost than does regular food.
I think the issue here is not one of what you eat, but about the abuse of food stamps re what their original purposes were.
One answer lies in getting poor/welfare/needy people to start their own pie businesses where they live (creates jobs, money, self-esteem, promotes the dignity of work). That is where govt money should go, i.e. to set up a small business (hey SBAdmin. where are you?), put people to work, create a new tax base, and provide a need (I always need a pie).
I’m surprised the reds who run Massachusetts haven’t stepped in to help the poor get a new start. Oh, I forgot. Obama would say that they didn’t “create” a business; someone else did. Sorry, no money for you!
No wonder these people are stuck on welfare.
[And if you want to see who is eating pies in the Obama family, just look at Michele’s butt).
“[And if you want to see who is eating pies in the Obama family, just look at Micheles butt).”
Why would I want to look at Moo-chelle’s face?
Not only that, but they sell the cards for cash and then proceed to buy whatever they want. :-(
I’ve heard of some of the most grievous abuses of the cash equivalent EBTs, but food stamps are self limiting because they are issued in quotas. Buy too many pies and you won’t have anything left that month for peanut butter sandwiches.
I worked for a large supermarket chain in MA for a few years. In stores in/near major cities (Springfield, Boston, Worcester, etc.) it was not uncommon to see people buying $40+ dollar cakes, deli platters, etc. with EBT cards.
I always wanted to ask if I was invited to their subsided apartment in the ghetto since I paid for it.
