WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama's campaign offered Mitt Romney a deal: If he releases a total of five years of tax returns, Obama's team won't criticize him for not releasing any more. Romney's campaign quickly rejected the offer.

Obama's campaign manager Jim Messina made the offer in a letter Friday to Romney campaign manager Matt Rhoades.

I don’t know why Romney issued the 13% statement. All that did was put the issue back on page one. Releasing the old returns is not a good option. My guess is that they may run 300 pages each..judging by all the items that could be included..that is plenty to give the ammo on all sorts of class warfare issues. Tell them to get bent on the latest deal.

How about a counter-offer?

If Obama releases his college transcripts, college application forms, financial aid application forms, SAT scores, LSAT scores, draft registration, passport records, travel visas, documents rescinding his US citizenship, and Social Security application, Romney will tell Donald Trump to "shut up". (Fret not, neither can nor will happen!)

How about this for a counter-offer?

“I release nothing more and you can all get yourselves to the Nether Regions”.

“I don’t know why Romney issued the 13% statement.”

Yep. If for no other reason than a lot of us paid a WHOLE lot more than 13% and if you add in tithing and donations to charity that’s even more than mittens was on the hook for.

Nailed it. One of Romney’s surrogates could/should get on TV and suggest such counter offers.

IS THIS A JOKE, the Onion? RR should not even respond. BUT RR should demand that America be shown the Clown's school transcripts, and his paperwork for entry into the USA when he was age 10. How did Indonesian Muslim Barry Soetoro leave America, and return as Barack Hussein Obama?

excerpt......"Fact 9. The only Legal Relationship he would have to his mother is that she was married to his Legal Father Lolo Soetoro, under Indonesian Law. He would be an Indonesian Citizen with an Indonesian Passport and an entry in Lolo’s KK documents. "

I’m sending Huckabee an email telling him that whoever convinced Romney to say he paid 13% tax rate has rocks for brains. Most people don’t realize that 13% is based on INVESTMENT INCOME - which is always taxed at a lower rate.

Now ... all it has done is open the door to more attacks.

When are the elites in the GOP ever going to get the message - the DEMOCRATS DO NOT LIKE THEM - AND ONLY PAL WITH THEM TO GET INFORMATION - information they can USE AGAINST US.

Geeeeeeez! The elites in the GOP are so obnoxious.

The Romney campaign already responded:

Hey Jim,

Thanks for the note.

It is clear that President Obama wants nothing more than to talk about Governor Romney’s tax returns instead of the issues that matter to voters, like putting Americans back to work, fixing the economy and reining in spending.

If Governor Romney’s tax returns are the core message of your campaign, there will be ample time for President Obama to discuss them over the next 81 days.

In the meantime, Governor Romney will continue to lay out his plans for a stronger middle class, to save Medicare, to put work back into welfare, and help the 23 million Americans struggling to find work in the Obama economy.

See you in Denver.

Thanks,

Matt Rhoades
Romney for President
Campaign Manager

Slightly off topic but if Romney actually did cheat on his tax returns, don't you think this would have come up in an IRS audit? I'm thinking surely that Obama has already had the IRS do a full audit on Mitt's taxes.

All Mitt has to say is that the IRS did an audit on his tax returns and found nothing wrong.

The Obama Admin is lagging in their negative attack campaign.

They need to get this Romney tax issue behind them (while looking like they won), so they can move on to the Mormon attack issue.

how did obama pay for his education? during the 2008 campaign, michelle complained endlessly that they had “just recently paid off” their student loans, and they were in their mid-40’s. how did obama finance his unsuccessful 2000 run for the US house? how did obama pay for the house in chicago that he clearly couldn’t afford at the time?

I would trade that information for tax return information.

Romney can hit this out of the park:

Release the details of your mortgage deal with Tony Rezko.
Release the details of your meetings with Bill Ayers.
Release the details of your deals with Ron Blagojevich.
Release details of your trip to Pakistan.
Release ANY college record.
Release the thousands of documents on Fast and Furious.
Release the secret deals you made with Solyndra.

Then we’ll talk.

"a lot of us paid a WHOLE lot more than 13%"

Ninety percent of the country likely paid a whole lot less than 13%. Remember that about 50% paid zero income taxes. Divide your total tax paid by your gross income, and you will be surprised how low the percentage is. You're probably thinking "marginal tax rate" and adjusted income which includes deductions, rather than total paid.

He does not have a job like most of us so the tax percentage he pays will be on investments which is taxed lower than regular income I believe. Just like Warren Buffet. There is no wealth tax yet otherwise he would have paid alot more. I really could care less how much he paid in taxes.

No, not a good idea. Obama will then release forged copies of his college transcripts, like he did his birth certificate, and then Romney will be obliged to turn over 5 years of tax returns. That would be a trap for Romney.

I’ll tack on a 2nd bad idea... I’d rather Romney did release the taxes, looked right into the cameras, and said, “As with ALL Americans this country provided me with opportunity. Not a hand-out, but an opportunity to prosper if I sought out to earn it. I worked hard, took risks, maybe even got lucky here and there.. and I made a buttload of money. LOTS of it. I’m rich as hell! I damn sure didn’t want to pay a lot of taxes on it, who in their right mind would? When only 1/2 of American’s pay ANYTHING and when so much of Federal spending goes to such stupid, wasteful things it would be equally wise to just toss my earnings down the toilet. Tell me all about the GSA blowing money on a lavish party and I’ll tell you there’s Americans that will pay taxes their entire lifetime and still not put much of a dent into the cost of that party. Tell me about billions going to American hating HAMAS, of millions to fund abortions in CHINA, or tell me about failed stimulus programs... and then come crying to me about not having enough of my hard earned dollars. Screw you!”

But very fortunately for Mr. Romney... my career choice doesn’t involve writing speaches or public policy statements.

Mitt should call a press conference, and with a solemn face say...”It’s true. I’m here to admit that Harry Reid is right. I did not pay ant taxes for 10 years.......from 1947 to 1957. Now shut up.”

Donald J. Trump ‏@realDonaldTrump

.@MittRomney shouldn't give additional tax returns until @BarackObama gives his passport records, college records & applications...

The chances that Zero will release documents that show that he denied that he was an American citizen are nil. So there is no chance of this "trade" ever happening.

If Romney releases them at all, it should be as PDF files, exhibiting the same kind of layering and evidence of tampering that Obama's BC does. The sections that have been tampered with should have information that agrees with what is on the physical documents. If questioned Romney should admit they were tampered with, and then offer to produce the physical documents for comparison - provided Obama does the same for his records.

All Romney needs to say is this: "Over the last three years, this President has shown no compunction whatsoever about using the IRS and the Department of Justice as his personal town sheriff; endlessly harassing his opponents while letting guilty people go free, all the while stonewalling and hiding any evidence of their crimes.

"If there was the slightest evidence of impropriety, I would have been on their target list. I paid the entirety of my legal obligations to the Federal taxing authorities, and there is not one American alive -- including the President -- who pays one dime more than the law requires."

Romney ran for President in 2008, and having lost the nomination set his sights on 2012. Do you think he is stupid enough to to have tax problems when he has been preparing to run for president since at least 2004?

I’m sure Obama already has access to Romney’s tax records—the IRS is part of the executive branch—and knows if there is something in there which can be used in political attacks. The problem is how to leak it to the press without creating an uproar over how the information got leaked. Maybe that will happen nearer the election—then Holder can appoint a reliable Obama supporter to investigate the leak.

What? Does anyone think that the ‘Progressives’ will object to a leak? There really doesn’t have to be anything big in Romney’s tax return, but if the opposition can plant the seeds of something evil, that’s all that’s necessary. Alinsky would be proud.
Such a study of propaganda, surely they studied at the Reichpropagandaleitung.

But the MSM would completely ignore these items and any other release that hurts their Man. Ultimately, any deal with the 0bama camp is a losing proposition. Romney cannot win on this issue and he needs to RIGHT NOW stop talking about it. These are taunts, and the best way to fight a taunting enemy is to ignore him.

I can just see the Obama campaign now. They’ll run a commercial with “It’s true. I’m here to admit that Harry Reid Reid is right,. I did not pay any taxes for 10 years.” Period. The “from 1947 to 1957” will never make the cut.

There had to be some reason but it did seem to come out of no where.

This so obviously a trap. Obama's campaign itself might "drop" the issue but you can bet his party and the "independent" PACs will not.

Paul Ryan's 2010 & 2011 returns were released to the Milwaukee newspaper. He and his wife paid over 20% in 2011 and around 15% in 2010.
