My maiden name was Pirkle, sometimes spelled Pirckel. My ancestor (he was a single man) got here just in time to fight with Washington. He was actually with Washington. My ancestors eventually mixed with some Cherokee so we are mostly Scots and Cherokee. LOL The Cherokee came from my paternal grandmother’s side. Dad thinks we have some Dutch mixed in also but I haven’t found evidence of it unless my ancestor was part Dutch and mostly Scots.

So modern minimalist architecture is "less sophisticated" than gothic architecture?

So the minimalist movement in art is "less sophisticated" because it's less complex than previous styles?

And, since you mentioned engineering, do you really think complex is better? I guarantee that the engineers who designed that tank spent many hours asking themselves "how can we simplify this; how can we use fewer parts; how can we make this less complicated?" In engineering, the simple solution to a problem is usually the most "sophisticated," because it has fewer failure points (something you want to reduce in a tank). "The Holy Grail is reducing the number of moving parts, which will allow us to build lighter, smaller instruments"--from NASA document."

...you'd have to be retarded - in the literal sense that you've never grown out of reading comic books and still giggle with bubble-mouthed delight whenever anybody jiggles a key ring in front of you.

You demonstrate the attitude that causes so many people to despise classical music devotees. "You don't agree classical is the best? You're a retarded; you're a mental child." Maybe you should consider why classical devotees continually stoop to this level to defend classical music. I'll give you a hint: when people start losing the argument based on the facts, they resort to the they of name calling you just engaged in.

As the last aboriginal warrior tribe in Europe, the Scots (especially the Highlanders) were highly enthusiastic about intermarrying with the Cherokees, who were kindred spirits in every sense.

The same Highland ancestor (who changed his name from MacGregor to McGee) is supposed to have married a Cherokee lady. So I guess I have more Cherokee than Fauxcahontas Warren. :-D

I certainly look more Cherokee than she does. But it could just be the Black Irish/ Black Scot.

As between minimalist and Gothic, give me Gothic every time. At least for the purpose intended; one of the most valid criticisms of modern Catholic architecture is that the minimalist approach does not function as intended: to give an echo of the glory of God. Mostly they just look like bus stations. And the customary flat roof always eventually leaks.

I grew up in a house designed by a disciple of FLW, and yes, the roof leaked. My experience of the minimalists is that the 'form follows function' has given way to 'I'm going to create an artistic statement, and to blazes with anybody who tries to live in the thing.' Since their artistic statement seems to be large empty spaces and flat planes, what you wind up with is both ugly and useless.

But, by golly, it's not complex!

Fixed it for you.

Chopin does this, too. He uses the minimum notes to create the maximum effect. The art/engineering that he uses to do this is highly complex and sophisticated.

I dare you to have the intellectual curiosity to see the whole thing through.

That’s amazing! My ancestor ended up somewhere in North Carolina in the Blue Ridge mountains and eventually the family moved all over the Appalachian mountains. Most of the immigrants from that time and location did mix with Cherokee. Whew! Talk about a wild bunch of mountain folk; Scottish Highlanders and Cherokee. LOL Even as late as my grandfather and great-grandfather I can remember them using the term Lowlanders to describe anybody that didn’t live in the mountains. :-) I guess it explains my taste in music.

Ummm...you do realize that the comments you made supported my point (that classical is not superior simply due to complexity level), don't you? Anyway, thanks for backing me up.

Bach is complex. Very complex. In fact, he is the composer more than any other whose work evokes mathematics. The temptation is to play him mechanically - but that's wrong. And that's the beautiful contradiction of the best classical music - it's complex, but the human element triumphs over the complexity.

I still think Glenn Gould has the definitive interpretation of Bach's keyboard works: Prelude & Fugue in A. (Yeah, he was more than a bit odd, but who cares? he played like an angel).

A former choirmaster of mine used to say that when singing you had to have a heart of fire but a head of ice. Another saying of his was, "Close enough for jazz . . . but not for classical."

Flatlanders. That was what my mountainy relatives called them (and us . . . we moved to Atlanta!)

My cousins have a big barbeque and family reunion every October, and they always have a local bluegrass band to play. Quality varies a bit, depending on who shows up, but it's always fun.

One thing I have noticed, though, is that on the bluegrass music it would not be a problem for my husband to jump in and play guitar (even I might be able to, though not on the lead solos - husband is a MUCH better guitarist) or for me to do the vocals. But I would as soon jump off the church spire as try to sub in for our music director on the organ, and I have studied piano since I was 6. The classical stuff is just a couple of orders of magnitude more difficult. And our music director is REALLY good. International level good.

I should add that my Number One problem is that I do not practice.

HaHa! I’ve heard the term flatlanders in my family too. Bluegrass is wonderful. I could listen to fiddles, banjos and old guitars all day! Mandolins too!

The great Bill Monroe on mandolin.

(I really do prefer the old-timey musicians.)

The blacks run Atlanta - the jobs in ATL are part of a racial spoils system.
