Living In Community

August 18, 2012

Texas Ranger baseball player Josh Hamilton has battled the demons of drug and alcohol addiction. So when his team won their playoff series in 2010, Hamilton was concerned about the postgame celebration. He admitted that it’s not good for a recovering alcoholic to be in the midst of a “rainstorm” of champagne. But something beautiful happened. Instead of champagne, his teammates stocked the locker room with ginger ale so that Hamilton could be included in the celebration. What a great picture of community and putting others’ needs above your own.

This is what Paul meant when he commanded the Philippians to count others as more significant than themselves (2:3-4). Being united to Christ made the Philippian believers members of the same family and gave them a special bond. Thus their attitude toward one another was to be expressed in practical ways: unity in love, sacrificial service, and discovering how to help others even when they didn’t realize they needed help. The motivation for this type of normal Christian behavior is the example of Jesus Christ.

Like Hamilton’s teammates, let’s carry each other’s burdens. When we selflessly love our neighbors, we are expressing our love for God.

Beautiful lives are these that bear
For other lives their burden of care;
Beautiful souls are those that show
The Spirit of Christ wherever they go. —Abbott
Christlike love is seen in good works.

Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. —Philippians 2:4

It’s time for Frederic Chopin: The Vienna and Early Paris Years. On 2 November 1830, Chopin took the stagecoach from Warsaw to Vienna. By the time Fred got to town, Beethoven had been dead for three years and Schubert for two. Beethoven had been the musical lion of Vienna, and his funeral had been an occasion of state. Interestingly enough, Fred never took a liking to Beethoven’s music. Schubert had been buried by family, friends and musical associates, but it would be 25 years before anything more than a few of his songs would become known. Fred probably never heard Schubert’s music.

Instead, Chopin declared that Bach was his favorite composer. It’s unlikely that Fred heard the 1829 revival of the “St. Matthew Passion” that Mendelssohn staged in Leipzig, which started the great Bach revival that continues today. Bach’s music was unknown to the general public, but professional musicians held his keyboard and organ works in high esteem. Fred probably was familiar with his inventions and his collection of preludes and fugues. What is funny is that there is very little of Bach in Chopin’s music.

The real influence was bel canto opera. The idea behind bel canto was that vocal technique – and pyrotechnics – were more important than plot and the actual quality of the music. This was why Rossini’s operas had replaced Handel’s in the repertory, and composers like Donizetti and Bellini were kings of the opera house. What Chopin did was treat the piano as an opera singer. The wonderful ornamentation that Fred wrote for piano came straight out of the opera house.

Chopin had barely arrived in Vienna when word came of the November Uprising against Russia back in Poland. Fred’s friends in Vienna journeyed back to Poland to fight, but Fred was already suffering from the early stages of the tuberculosis that would eventually kill him.

At age 21, Chopin’s work for 1831 showed that he had reached a high level of professionalism. None of the works from this year went into the desk drawer. All were published. The first was a set of mazurkas. The first mazurka in B-flat is a piece that every child pianist is forced to tackle. It’s still fun.

5 Mazurkas (B-flat, A minor, F minor, A-flat, C), Op. 7
