Book: Sandusky report terms incomprehensible to Paterno
CBS Sports ^ | August 17, 2012

Joe Paterno had to be prodded by his family to read the grand jury report regarding Jerry Sandusky and did not understand some of its graphic terminology, according to a new book.

The book, Paterno by Joe Posnanski, was purchased Friday by the Associated Press in advance of its release next week.

In the book, Posnanski describes a scene at Paterno's home, two days after Sandusky had been charged with child sex abuse last November. Paterno's family and a close adviser were trying to explain to the Penn State coach that there was a growing sentiment Paterno must have known for years about the accusations against Sandusky.

The book quotes Paterno as shouting "I'm not omniscient!"

The book also indicates Paterno didn't comprehend all the terms in the report, asking his son what sodomy meant.

According to the book, later that night Paterno's son, Scott, told his mother that she should brace herself for the possibility that Joe could be fired.

Sue Paterno responded, "Scotty, that will kill him."

Paterno was fired by school trustees two days later, on Nov. 9. He died in January at age 85 of cancer.

Sandusky, Paterno's longtime defensive coordinator, is jailed and awaiting sentencing after being convicted in June on 45 criminal counts involving 10 boys.

Didn’t he attend Brown to become a lawyer? He knows what omniscient means but not sodomy? Come on.

It's hard to believe that he failed to follow up, though.

He did. That follow through is found in the Freeh Report pgs 66 - 79 and it wasn't him who failed to follow through.

Is it possible that a person could be so wrapped up in a sport like football while leading a conservative family-oriented life, that he wouldn’t comprehend what was going on with Sandusky and little boys?
Yes, I believe it's possible. http://www.renewamerica.com/columns/otoole/120805

Irregardless of Joe Pa its just unfathomable that a college coach like Sandusky would even have perv sex with young boys and no less mess around with them on campus. On the other hand gay marriage has nearly become a holy sacrament to these liberal run universities. FUBAR!

Sounds like a good description of the democrat party platform.

So Paterno knew that Sandusky was showering with little boys, and knew that there were witnesses to some pretty bad events, and he brought it to the attention of his bosses, but they didn’t follow through. So Paterno did his part, right?

And in spite of knowing this.... he continued to allow Sandusky to have full access to the PSU athletic facilities through 2011.

And poor old Joe was just a naive old man who didn’t even know these types of acts were possible. Riiiiiiiight.

I think many knew about Sandusky. He was never offered a head coach position at any other university dispite that winning record. Why ?

Paterno

Is it any wonder that people begin to act like they belong there when placed on a pedestal.

Your contention would be correct if Paterno was born a senior citizen. But it stretches reality to think that for the entire time he was alive he was oblivious. Paterno was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, and spent time in the US army. He would have had to have been deaf and blind not to have heard of sodomy somewhere along the way. If true that he never heard of such things, Paterno would have been a pinball player not a football coach.

The Paterno family are as shameless as their patriarch. They need to be ostracized.

So I guess when Paterno was told that someone saw Sandusky repeatedly thrusting his pelvis into a boy's rear end, that it was just some kind of silly game or something?

I suspect Paterno was such a powerful intimidating figure and getting up their in age that no one wanted to confront the guy and put their career in jeopardy I suspect the coaching staff were concerned about their career path that they knew enough about Paterno to not rock the boat and hope for the best. I am just guessing their was a deep denial factor too that someone from his era like to be exist in.

People said much the same thing about Pope John Paul II with regard to the homosexual invasion of the seminaries since the 60s and his 27-year papacy in which it flourished under his nose. He is said to have dismissed wanting to hear anything about it from senior advisors because during the Nazi era in the Poland of his youth, false accusations of homosexuality were enough for Communist overlords to ruin the careers of local officials and have them carted off to the extermination camps. Yet I hear no one on FR calling for him to have been jailed.

I lived in an Italian Catholic parish in Pennsylvania for a long time, and enjoyed the neighborly company of the many devout Catholic family men and grandfathers there. Given Paterno's age, I can completely understand his inability to fully grasp what he was dealing with. It is an imagery so disgusting and foul that he may not even have wanted to spend an unnecessary millisecond on it.

Read Rick Reilly’s article on this subject at ESPN. I never heard of Reilly before this, but he sums up his and the other media’s idol-worship of “Papa Joe”. Real journalism can be awesome

Curley did change his mind apparently in 2001, but that was after talking to Sandusky’s charity CEO — child psychologist Dr Jack Raykovitz.

The control freak sickos sure stick together. You know a person could easily go on the dark internet get a proxy and look up child porn anytime they wanted.....
makes you wonder why it’s still there when *websites are taken down every day for no reason...

And in spite of knowing this.... he continued to allow Sandusky to have full access to the PSU athletic facilities through 2011.

His access to the facilities with kids was cut off after 2001. As a matter of fact when the administration was negotiating Sandusky's retirement agreement back in 1998 Paterno specifically requested that none of Sandusky's 2nd Mile kids be allowed into the football facilities for liability reasons. He was overruled.
