He would also like to put together 24-hour emergency packs for the elderly and disabled who have trouble doing their own shopping.

"I'm prepared, my neighbors are prepared. I know everybody is not and we need to get that point across," said DeLong.

It's not just talk, DeLong walks the walk. He keeps two backpacks in his car at all times full of tools and first responder items that could come in handy -- a hard hat, thermal blankets, face mask, snacks and water are just a few of the items.

Surely, Dell, IBM, Academy, Home Depot or some other Austin business could bump that 24 hour emergency pack to a 72 hour one.

People did this kind of thing before FEMA, and they will do so long after FEMA has been forgotten.

Disaster preparedness is the ultimate insurance policy!

Still ... I’m torn about having a “go bag” on standby. On the one hand, it would be sensible to keep a few days worth of survival supplies ready, if evacuation is required.

I’m just not too sweet on the “evacuation is required” part. I’m hard-pressed to come up with ANY reason to evacuate, least of all if “government officials” call for it.

We live in an area with poison gas wells, and we are also prone to wildfires. The two main reasons we would have to “bug out”.

Agreed it’d take something major to make me head for the hills but we did do that once during a flood and that was mainly because I didn’t want to get stranded with a very sick kid.

Where this teen is, there isn’t much other than a tornado or WWIII that would cause an evacuation. But I do find it commendable that he’s thinking ahead.

Not being familiar with the area, I can guess two more easily....major gas leak or industrial accident resulting in a HAZMAT incident.

For example, the only mandatory evacuation there’s ever been where I live was due to a chemical leak/spill at a nearby carpet mill.

Youth involvement: what some would call a new FEMA initiative with online paper dolls that will prolly be rolled out in public grade schools nationwide.
