FULL INTERVIEW – Paul Ryan on Fox: “I’ve voted to send people to war”
The Right Scoop ^ | 8/18/2012 | The Right Scoop via Fox News

Posted on 08/18/2012 11:51:01 AM PDT by sheikdetailfeather

This interview covers the gamut of issues from Medicare to fair trade with China to Ryan’s foreign policy credentials – and a lot more. Probably the most noteworthy thing he said in this 12 minute interview was that in talking about his foreign policy credentials, he said this:

The way I would say about foreign policy is you know I’ve been in Congress for a number of years. That’s more experience that Barack Obama had when he came into office. You know, I’ve voted to send people to war.

hey, he’s a hawk. that’s an odd couple with the romney family who boycotted the military for whatever reason (is it a mormon thang?). but maybe that is what the doctor ordered for mitt.

The Mitt Romney line of males has a perfect record of zero uniformed service to America, since his family immigrated here 170 years ago, to serve Joseph Smith.

“(is it a mormon thang?)”

i’m sure you would prefer that to be the case, but i know a number of mormons who have served honourably in the military and one is now in Afghanistan. so, i don’t think it’s a mormon thing, but i do believe you seem to have issues with Romney being a mormon. would you rather we have 4 more years of that Muslim-hiding-in-plain sight BO, than a patriotic American who happens to be a mormon?

Good points!

Yes, I think it’s safe to say, people like ansell2 would much rather have Obama in office than Romney. Makes you just want to say: “WTF?”

So is Military service a requirement for being President in your mind? Since you seem hell bent in airing your personal vendetta against him may I suggest you join others who would rather Bi**h about what he is not (according to you) and go vote for the alternative. And to the Gary Johnson wack jobs this is no time for a protest vote. Is Romney perfect, no, but he is better than the alternative.

Second, Romney unlike the current Emperor will work with what I hope and pray to be a Republican controlled House and Senate. He will not create the rule by Executive Order and we can do this right with a balance, stop trying to put Obama’s crown on his head and think of what you are doing! And yes I am very well acquainted with the right of Freedom of Speech, so to those who feel the need to trot that out I say FINE keep helping Obama by being divisive!

Jim Rob, you know I have been a member since the Clinton times and I know you personally hold animosity to Romney but this eating of our own has got to stop. Either you are for change or against it, and acting in a divisive fashion is EXACTLY what the Democrats are counting on. I know Chicago politics, I lived there for many years and unless we can put aside our differences and work toward removing the current occupant of the White House and get on the road to turning this all around then we will get what many of you seem to want. Your candidate (insert name here) did not get the votes and Romney will be the nominee and Paul Ryan as a strong and capable VP. The People have spoken and no matter how much you wish for another alternative the choice is clear, even my fave Sarah Palin endorses Romney. She is a really smart woman and understands we are not gonna get there i one fell swoop. Progressives have been building towards this battle for decades, either we band together or we lose. A house divided against itself cannot stand!

Make your choice but for the sake of God stop with the hand wringing and doubt casting and help this to happen. Go ahead and flame me and give me all of your yeah butts... That time is over, either you are part of the solution or you are part of the problem!

The alternative is as Harry Callahan said “It’s a hell of a price to pay for being stylish”

You Choose!

Hmmmmm.....

I’m thinking of nearly twenty Mormons who served in the armed forces. So no, I don’t think it’s a Mormon thing.

Romney was on a student deferment during part of the Vietnam war. Part of many/most mormon's college experience is a two year missionary stint between sophomore and junior years.

I don't know if there is any kind of deferment for missionaries, or if it was covered by his student deferment.

But to answer your original question, no. Its not a mormon thing. The Jehovah's witnesses are conscientious objectors, is that who you were thinkinf of perhaps?

Look at this photo from the FoxNews homepage. Obamao looks deranged or possessed. Ryan looks like a college athlete.

I'm a military vet myself but I've come around on this whole "military service" thing with regard to our politicians. There was once a time in America where it was almost expected that males would serve their nation in the military before moving on to their careers. But with the advent of the all-volunteer military, this has fallen by the wayside. Over the past few decades, the military has transformed itself to where it has now become a career choice as opposed to an obligation. Therefore, we should probably not be so harsh on the younger politicians coming up that haven't served.

As my sons reached adulthood, I told them that the military was a great option but that if they chose to do so, they should commit themselves to a military career and as commissioned officers as opposed to simply enlisting. I say that as one who enlisted myself and made it to sergeant.

I would never recommend anybody enlisting unless they had few other options. I enlisted in the Marine Corps and served four years, making it to E-5 (Sergeant). It was a great experience and I'm glad I did it but only because I did not have many other options. My family was working-class poor so could not afford to send me to college and because my high school grades were mediocre, I wasn't going to get any kind of scholarship. So it was either scratch out a living as an unskilled worker in a tough neighborhood (where many of my peers were caught up in drugs, crime and worse) or join the military and see the world while acquiring a skill (as my recruiter put it).

On the other hand, becoming an officer in the military is absolutely a fantastic career choice. The difference between how officers and enlisted personnel are treated in our military defies description. Let's just say you don't want to be enlisted unless you have no other option.

But to become an officer requires a much longer commitment in time so if you go that route, might as well make it your career.

This is why we are unlikely to see many more presidents with military experience. An enlisted man has little chance to become president and a career officer will likely not be considered. Witness the recent cries about General Petraeus not having the necessary experience - which is an utter joke, by the way. Anybody making it to that level in the military has more executive experience than just about anybody else, not to mention broad experience in politics, diplomacy, team-building and knowing how to choose good subordinates and delegate to them accordingly.

Mormons seem to enlist in smaller numbers, with Utah being about 47th or so, but many do enlist.

My fathers family went to Utah 170 years ago and we have fought in every war that this country has engaged in and a few before we were a country.

Yours?

The Romneys immigrated to the United States 170 years ago, to serve Joseph Smith, after being converted to his religion, in England.

During that 170 years of American history, not one male in Mitt’s line has ever served, no draft, no war, no sense of patriotism, nothing, has ever gotten them to break that family tradition.

Mitt was evading the draft in France as his father campaigned as the anti-war candidate for president, against Ronald Reagan, when it came to Mitt himself running for president in 2008, he had all five of his military age sons with him, saying that they served America, by serving his campaign.

Thank you, sir. You hit the nail on the head. Sensible Americans should know that to bitch slap the Romney/Ryan ticket is to give credence to the King Obama dictatorship.

Once again, I stand with you.

Bull crap! I'm a very old vet but to make a statement is pure foolishness. Like saying that to Americans that never served are worthless pieces of crap and have no leadership. Just because the Constitution makes the President the commander in chief does not give non military no rights to the Presidency. There is more problems in running this Country than the military part.

The Mormon religion gave out their own deferments during the Vietnam War, and of course Mitt got one when he needed it, and a mission out of the country as his dad campaigned, saving some of the awkward questions of about his son and the war.

The Mormon deferments were plentiful enough, but were forbidden to black Mormons, no black Mormon ever received a Mormon deferment, they were on their own.

We don’t know what percentage of Mormon draftees who died in Vietnam, were black.
