A local food fight is causing a lot of squawking in the Village.
The ruckus began when Dan Cathy, president of the Atlanta-based restaurant chain Chick-fil-A, criticized gay marriage. N.Y.U.’s Weinstein Residence Hall, which is currently closed for summer break, serves food from this company.
The Village location is the only Chick-fil-A franchise in the city.
Hillary Dworkoski, a former student at N.Y.U.’s Gallatin School of Indi-vidualized Study, caused a lot of clucking by circulating a petition at www.change.org, urging N.Y.U. to stop doing business with Chick-fil-A.
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who is openly gay, stirred the pot last month when she used Council letterhead in a message to university President John Sexton, asking him to cancel ties with Chick-fil-A. More feathers flew because she opened by mentioning her official capacity “as the Speaker of the NYC Council, and on behalf of my family.”
If Quinn had her way, students might have to gobble up other offerings at the Weinstein dining room on University Place, like Quiznos subs, fruit-filled pancakes and “Grab n’ Go” items like sushi.
N.Y.U.’s decision on the subject is pending. In a statement, a spokesperson said, “The recent remarks attributed to Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy about gay marriage are out of step with N.Y.U.’s views on this matter, and with our practices.” As to the school’s next move, the statement said, “The University Administration will ask the University Senate to take up the issue of Chick-fil-A’s status on campus again when it reconvenes this fall to make a recommendation on how to proceed.”
In a written statement, Steve Robinson, Chick-fil-A executive vice president of marketing, said, “We value everyone and strive to treat all people with a caring spirit.” An online press release for the company says, “Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.”
Mayor Bloomberg doesn’t feel it’s government’s duty to flush Chick-fil-A out of the city. On WOR Radio’s “The John Gambling Show with Mayor Mike,” Bloomberg said it was inappropriate for “government to look at somebody’s political views and decide whether they can live in the city or operate a business in the city or work for someone in the city.”
Similarly, Gregory Angelo, chairperson of Log Cabin Republicans of New York State, representing gays and lesbians within the Republican Party, cried “fowl” at the effort to ban the chicken chain.
“I do not want elected officials making the choice of how or where to spend my money,” Angelo said.
Tina Montenegro, an N.Y.U. doctoral student in French literature, said the owner of Chick-fil-A stating his opinion “is free expression.”
Marion Nestle, a professor in the nutrition department at N.Y.U., said, “It seems to me that there are two issues here. Should N.Y.U. permit franchises on campus from fast-food companies with distasteful views about sexual preference? And should N.Y.U. permit fast-food and beverage companies to be on campus at all?”
Nestle said such fast-food companies market themselves to poor families and children both here and in developing nations.
“The Chick-fil-A issue is a good reason for N.Y.U. to reconsider all of its arrangements with fast-food and soda companies,” Nestle stated.
On another gustatory note, radio host Gambling said the chain’s chicken sandwiches were tasty. The mayor chimed in, “Never had one, I didn’t know about them until I read about them in the paper.”
The L.G.B.T. Center on W. 13th St. declined comment on the politically incorrect poultry place.
However, Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum of Congregation Beit Simchat Torah, the local gay and lesbian synagogue, said, “As individual consumers, we should express our values through how we spend our dollars.”

I have only eaten at Chik-fil-a a few times............we just got one in town about a year- 2 years ago. My husband loves it. Saturday I was doing all my errands in town and it was moving in day for our local university and town was slammed. I decided to go the the CFA drive-thru. They were completely packed, but the service was EXCELLENT! They should seriously consider hiring out their reatsaurant trainers because the other fast food places have workers who seem barely alive( & barely clean!).
Anyway, long story short, I have seen many people here extol the spicy chicken sandwich & I got it. It was really DELICIOUS! Can any CFA devotees tell me their opinion of the strips & nuggets. They will be my next choice when I go again.
It’s clearer than ever now - although it was always fairly clear - that their tolerance and diversity extends only as far as their own ideology.

When did Dan Cathy “criticize gay marriage”? I thought he expressed his opinion on traditional marriage.

They see nothing ironic in nations called People’s Republic of xxx.
I really don’t want to give ‘them’ ideas, but watch them turn the CLOSED SUNDAYS policy against Chik-fil-A along the lines of I eat 7 days a week so anything us lil darlins are offered should be open 7 days a week, if not 24 hrs a day because “We are special, after all we are College Students” .....etc...etc..

I love the nuggets for so many reasons... they have more of the delicious coating - they are easy to eat while driving :) you can get just 4, or 6, or 8 depending on how hungry you are.... The strips are delicious,too. Very, very tender - they are the tenderloin of the chicken breast. I prefer them on the salad - with house dressing. Back to the nuggets - the sauces are wonderful and make the nuggets - my favorite is the chick-fil-a sauce - but the polynesian is yummy.... you can't go wrong with anything on their menu. Try it all!!!
Why not just let the students take a vote ... with their dollars? Each dollar spent at Chick-fil-a is a vote for; each dollar not spent there is a vote against.

Why don’t they just get to the root of their complaint and ban conservatives? Or easier yet, ban white people? That way they will know their precious campus is completely bigot-free.

"In that spirit ... [Christianity] is about a personal relationship. Companies are not lost or saved, but certainly individuals are," Cathy added.
"But as an organization we can operate on biblical principles. So that is what we claim to be. [We are] based on biblical principles, asking God and pleading with God to give us wisdom on decisions we make about people and the programs and partnerships we have. And He has blessed us."
Some have opposed the company's support of the traditional family. "Well, guilty as charged," said Cathy when asked about the company's position.
"We are very much supportive of the family -- the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that.
"We operate as a family business ... our restaurants are typically led by families; some are single. We want to do anything we possibly can to strengthen families. We are very much committed to that," Cathy emphasized.

Let's imagine that conservatives were like liberals for a moment. Let's imagine a major conservative (or someone like Rush) called for the firing of every liberal wherever or whenever they expressed their opinion. Say you like Obama; bam, you're fired. Express support for welfare or gay marriage; bam, gone. Promote feminist claptrap; you're outta here!
There are more of us than there are of them. Outside of Hollywood, universities, and the news media (who all do fire you for being conservative!), liberals would be terrified to speak up.
But we're not like liberals, conservatives want to be "fair." So we don't do that. But maybe we ought to consider fighting fire with fire...
Someone who probably realizes that the only reason that today's rabble who cry "Hater" and "Intolerant" can do so because 40-50 years ago, these "intolerant" people they raid against thought that all expression, including obnoxious speech from that generation's rabble, showed be valued.

Unfortunately, it is because he does not PROMOTE gay marriage that he is labeled a hater. It’s as simple as that. No other way to interpret it; says a lot about the PC liberals and the gay agenda.
I think we all can raise both hands on that.
Maybe it is high time - because liberals have presupposed this sense of fairness, and used it to their advantage and to our detriment.
Ever notice how the left loves 'petitions'... petitions where names can't be verify. Mickey Mouse and Goofy have been known to sign a few times...
Why are liberals ashamed to show their faces? Why don't liberals do the kind of protest conservatives did at Chick-fil-A? BECAUSE liberals tried that - and with all the free publicity they weren't able to get more than a few dozen people to show up around the county. Their numbers of lies, the names on the petition are lies, liberals are liars. Period.

If an atheist doesn't believe in God, what is there to fear from that perceived non existent God? Why should one care what one prays for? There's no one listening.
The problem here ISN'T about gays and their "rights". Its ALL about silencing Christians.
You see, this gay "rights" issue ISN'T about gays vs straights. There are MANY straights who are not Christians, who still oppose gay marriage. In fact, I would say that just looking at numbers of "practicing" Christians in this country vs overall population, and then looking at the split of those accepting or opposing gay marriage. I'd say that Christians who hold to "traditional" marriage, are a smaller group than those non-Christians who also hold to traditional marriage.
What does one say to the group of non-Christians who also support traditional marriage???
From all indications, those opposing same sex marriage outnumber those for by over a 2:1 margin.
IF half of those opposing same sex marriage are non Christians, then the argument is SIMPLY one half of society believes in it, the other half doesn't. Its one half of societal opinion vs the other. Both halves would have equal footing.
The problem is Christians view marriage is from God. They view a redefinement of marriage as an afront to God who created man and woman, and the relationship they are to have.
That is why this isn't about gay "rights". This IS an ATTACH specifically against Christians and their beliefs and the practicing of their faith.

If university student don’t want Chick-Fil-A, just don’t patronize them. Let your fellow students, faculty, and staff who want Chick-Fil-A eat there. That is (or at least used to be) the American way—NOT banning, boycotting, and bullying!!!!
Maybe you can LEARN something—why people WANT Chick-Fil-A—why your campus Christian fellowship groups will eat there after their services, Bible studies, etc. Are these people REALLY “hateful bigots”, or is there something else going on?
Can you trust “gay liberation” and “human rightser” groups to give you your information? What gives the Southern Poverty Law Center the authority to determine what is a “hate group”? Is the whole “hate group”, “hate speech” and “hate crime” business really valid, or an intellectual, moral and legal fraud?
