Legitimate rape became a Twitter trending topic in the U.S. this afternoon after liberal blog Talking Points Memo posted a video of Rep. Todd Akin claiming that victims of legitimate rape are unlikely to become pregnant.

McDonnell smear job take two. Did not work in VA, will not work in MO any better
What does any MAN know about “legitimate rape”?? They should try it some time.
True that.
Watch the video...it’s painful.
What a dumbass.
Even if he used the term “legitimate rape” as the opposite of false rape claims, that was still a stupid comment.
On both sides of the aisle, the American political class is increasingly composed of people too stupid to make it in private industry - if the report on what this guy said is true, he’s a prime example.
why say anything about it?
there is a video of it.
@Todd Akin, GOP Senate candidate: Legitimate rape rarely causes pregnancy
First of all, from what I understand from doctors, (pregnancy from rape) is really rare, Akin told KTVI-TV in a clip posted to YouTube by the Democratic super PAC American Bridge. If its a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.
Main issue in a forcible rape is not resulting pregnancy. The main issues are physical abuse and mental torture forced upon the victim. Pregnancy has medical solutions, mental trauma does not have easy solutions.
He was responding to a question "what about in the case of rape". That doesn't make it any less stupid.
Poor choice of words which well may hound him to defeat!
You get these ideas when you drink beer or bad wine and watch sci fi tv shows.
We’ve already GOT plenty of stoopid people in Washington, don’t need this one. Even if he is a Republican.
How quickly can the GOP replace this numbskull? He was up by 11 pts for crying out loud. All he had to do was keep his mouth shut until the election and he wins. Sheesh.
Same as any WOMAN knows about war.
Men get raped. Check out any prison with men in it.
There are about 2 pregnancies for every 1000 cases of forcible rape, not statutory rape.
This is mostly a red herring be the LEFT.
Ugh. This country is full of buffoons. Seems like most run for office.
So, no, you don't need to know anything about sex, it's mechanics or its mis use to get along in industry. What you do need to know about is SEXUAL HARASSMENT and you'll want to study up on that so you don't get sued.
BTW, sexual harassment has nothing to do with sex.
Dana Loesch comes to his defense

Is it true? I have heard that true rape victims ARE unlikely to become pregnant....not that it is impossible, but highly unlikely.
I’m no expert, obviously, but I’ve heard that...
He deserves to lose so our dear friend Claire can keep her job.(snicker)he.. he... All during the primary she ran ads in favor of Akin because she knew he would be her best chance to win. So the tea party candidate lost and we have him now.....:(
His name is Akin, and if you think six more years of McCaskill would be better than him, you need to revoke your membership in the world of conservatism...no matter how uncouth the statement.
How many of those used the "morning after" pill or equivalent to "prevent pregnancy?"
The moron is more or less accurate that pregnancy is uncommon among rape victims, but even a moron should know that discussion of the issue is walking through a verbal minefield.
Well, he just stepped on one of the mines.
Leave it to Republicans to pick this dimwit for a easy pickup against the most vulnerable Dem. The other two would have blown away McCaskill.

Hope to hell this isn’t a “Maccaca moment.” We’re SO screwed if it is! Six more years of listening to that harpy Ma McCaskill...
I like Dana Loesch a lot. One of my favorites. But I disagree with her here. This was a beyond-horrid comment by Aiken.
Brings back memories of Clayton Williams here in Texas. I was looking forward to having a strong Republican/businessman taking the reigns, and getting on his bandwagon. But then he told that ‘rape’ joke, which I found sickeningly offensive, and I washed my hands of him.
Anyway, it certainly looks like MO should have heeded Palin’s advice and gone with Sarah Steelman.
I just can’t understand...all Akin had to do was ride it out! Up 11 points in polls! Just hope he isn’t subject to more Bidenisms...
Whatever he was trying to communicate, he haws just committed political harikari.
MEGA DITTOS!!!!!
Honestly, it sounds likes something that Biden would say.
If he had, nobody would care.
I saw the video. It may not be as bad, but he should kept his mouth close. It is so easy to trip yourself up.
Who would have thunk McCaskill (down by 20 in every poll) would have this thing wrapped up by August.
The dumbest thing I have ever heard.
Painful is an understatement. So the good people of Missouri chose this idiot over Steelman?
GOP chances of winning control of the Senate appear to have been dashed by this idiot.
When I was in Catholic school, 7th or 8th grade, in the 1970s, I was told that pregnancies don’t usually result from rape because the woman will miscarry because of the stress. It took a few more years for me to figure out that this was wishful thinking, and would not be a good argument against abortion in cases of rape.
I wonder if this candidate was fed the same line when he was younger, and never re-examined it.
Rape of males (as with Sandusky or Dahmer) seldom results in pregnancy.
Rape of premenarche girls seldom results in pregnancy.
Rape of post menopausal females seldom results in pregnancy.
Anal rape seldom results in pregnancy.
Oral rape seldom results in pregnancy.
Women with hysterectomies or full tubal ligations don't tend to get pregnant from rape.
If you compile the statistics lumping all victims of rape together rather than strictly healthy women of child bearing age experiencing penile vaginal rape...then yes, you can artificially create the perception that rape is less likely to produce a pregnancy than other intercourse.
It will be a lie, of course, but you can interject it and hope nobody calls you on it.
I can find a doctor who will tell you that whatever herbal concoction I want them to endorse causes men to grow bigger genitals and women to grow larger busts. If you don't look at the underlying methodology well...
Charles Jaco is a leftwing asswipe...I can tell you that. He hates conservatives almost as much as Ed Schultz. He is no friend of Constitutionalists....so keep that in mind....he and the rest of the pro-Obamugabe media will twist and extrapolate anything a McCaskill opponent will say to make them look bad.
Akin did seem to reference what doctors told him...maybe Jaco ought to check with some doctors to see whether what Akin said was accurate at all.
And maybe we ought to quit listening to the jerkoffs in the liberal media.
Yep. McCaksill was actually pulling for him. Who knew this was out there (or is this recent?).
Anyone who says this is “nothing” is not living in reality. This has the potential to take down more than him with the way Dems demagogue.
How long and how often did we attack Whoopi on here for her “rape rape” comment? Can’t justify the same thing in one of our own. Just stupid. Hope there’s time for recovery.
Come on, people...wake up and smell what the liberals are cooking....this is all going to be done to every Republican on the ballot...words twisted to sound worse than the actual quote, out of context, etc...all to keep the liberals in power and to keep the Senate from turning to a point where we can overturn Obamacare.
Quit falling for the media spin, dammit!!
First of all, from what I understand from doctors, (pregnancy from rape) is really rare, Akin told KTVI-TV in a clip posted to YouTube by the Democratic super PAC American Bridge. If its a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.
Knowing WHEN to stop talking is important in politics. Instead of “running off at the mouth” he might best only have made his first comment - what doctors say about the incidence of pregnancy resulting from rape - and left it at that. That might have prevented any great excitement about his comment.
