Missouri GOP Senate Candidate should withdraw from Race Now (Vanity)
August 19, 2012 | pistolpackinpapa

Congressman Todd Aikin, the GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate from Missouri should withdraw from the Missouri Senate Race immediately over his stupid statement he made today re: "legitimate rape". To not do so, will assure six more years for Claire McKaskill in the U.S. Senate. What he said, in essence, when asked about abortion, was that a "legitimate rape" rarely causes pregnancy. Now, that comment is going viral over the internet.

I witnessed, first-hand, in 1990 how a "rape gaffe" by GOP candidate for Governor of Texas, Clayton Williams, who had a wide lead in the polls at the time, caused him to lose the Governor's Office to Ann Richards; in GOP-Red Texas.

Many of us Conservatives understand what he was saying and are in agreement. But, it was a stupid thing to say. For the sake of this Election and control of the U.S. Senate, Aikin should withdraw immediately or "Turn out the lights; the party's over.

Probably the only person in America who could get a pass on this, right now, would be Joe Biden.

Are you insane? This election is not about abortion, women’s rights or anything else the liberals want it to be. Its about the economy, jobs, national security/identity. His opponent is one who has destroyed the economy. So NO!

A quick “I mispoke” will take care of it.

Just don’t let it be ‘Maccaca’d’ by the media.

What is the law on this in MO???

The last time this happened was in NJ, some years ago, when a Dem candidate got irreparably tarnished, and the Dem Party got the courts to set aside a state law so that they could substitue a ‘ringer’ (Lautenberg) to save the election...

But I doubt that Pubbies have that option/luxury....

You’re an idiot. Jeez, sometimes I want to withdraw from life because of people like you. Put your big boy pants on and grow up.

Couldn’t agree more. not only was it an horrific comment, he now has handed the seat to the Dems. he is done.

Why on EARTH would the Mo Tea Party nominate someone this flat out stupid?? There are some wonderful, intelligent Tea Partiers in this nation and they picked him?

Even I’d vote for his opponent after this and I’ve never voted Dem in my life. This isn’t just bad, this is horrible. I prosecuted more rape cases than I can count. This fool has no place representing anyone for ANYTHING.

I agree. If this is still exploding in the press a week from now and tarring the rest of the Republican Senate candidates and the national ticket, this guy has to go. The problem is he is the “legitimate” winner of the Republican primary and no one can force him to step down.Unless they quietly offer him a job in prospective Romney administration to get him out of there...

He should, but he won’t. His self interest will get the best of him. If he bows out, he admits his own stupidity and will never have a political career again. If he stays in the race, he has more of a chance to win than no chance.
Might as well support him, get beyond the gaffe an onto the issues. Or perhaps, someone can give him several millions and a villa in St. Bart’s and he might get out.

Er, did you forget the pubbies did that exact same thing with Jack Ryan in Illinois? They pulled him from the ticket which led directly to Obama starting his career in the Senate. That may not have springboarded him directly to the presidency, since electing Obama required such a level of stupidity that whoever voted for him would’ve probably done the same even if he ascended to the presidency directly from his previous lofty position of community organizer.

Please Mechanicos; you are giving the American voter too much credit. It’s little things like this that the uninformed electorate zero in on and base their vote on. Besides, it has fired up women who might not have even voted and men who were raped as little boys who might not have voted for McKaskill. I’m telling you this: I’ve been heavily involved in politics since 1980 and this WILL cost him the Election. Read what I said in my Post about the 1990 Governor’s Race in Texas. He must withdraw or it’s over. I’ll even bet you money on it.

A quick "I misspoke" will take care of it.

The problem being Aikin is spending a lot of his time saying "What I really meant was...". This cuts into the time where he can get his message on the economy and jobs and defense out there. To date his quotes have provided McCaskill with a couple of commercials. This quote should be good for another one. God knows how many more he'll give her.

” Er, did you forget the pubbies did that exact same thing with Jack Ryan in Illinois? “

My bad - I did forget that one...

(Actually, I think I ‘blocked it out’, as I do most things involving the “Zero”..)

I’d agree it would be better if Aiken went away. Not sure at this point it will matter. McCaskill probably just got herself 6 more years and our goal of taking back the US Senate just became all the more difficult.
