Odious remarks by GOP Missouri Senate candidate Cong. Todd Akin about how few pregnancies result from "legitimate rape" have done more than outrage people across the country and doom Akin's bid to move up from the House.
It motivated the Romney campaign - - already trailing among women voters in recent polls - - to distance itself from Akin by assuring voters that Romney and Paul Ryan - - the "Romney-Ryan administration" - - should they win in November, would not oppose raped women's access to abortion.
"Governor Romney and Congressman (Paul) Ryan disagree with Mr. Akin's statement, and a Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape," Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said.
You'd probably say that sounds reasonable and humane - - except it was just three days ago that PolitiFact devoted a lot of space to this issue and found that while Romney backed abortions in cases of incest and rape, Ryan did not.
And had been an abortion opponent throughout his entire political career - - backing an exception only when the life of the mother was at stake - - thus earning a perfect score from a leading anti-abortion organization on this basic tenet of conservative ideology and practice.
News coverage of Ryans first congressional race in 1998, as well as statements he made to the National Right to Life Committee, a leading anti-abortion group, show Ryan has taken a stricter anti-abortion view than Romney.
The only anti-abortion exception Ryan favors is situations where an abortion is needed to save the life of the mother, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. The National Right to Life Committee concurs, based on information the group says it collected in 1998 and 2000 from Ryan as a candidate.

"Governor Romney and Congressman (Paul) Ryan disagree with Mr. Akin's statement, and a Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape," Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said.
Then we learn that Romney supports abortion not just in rape cases but also in incest cases:
found that while Romney backed abortions in cases of incest and rape, Ryan did not.
Now we know why Romney did not sign that pro-life pledge.
And we also discover that Right to Life, in endorsing Romney, has violated their own standards.
In short, those are loopholes so large that you could drive a fleet of trucks through them. Because it all depends on how you define those words.
Rape: "spousal rape"? "date rape"? Is rape rape just because someone says it's rape?
Incest: a consenting adult practitioners of incest really not responsible for the life of a conceived child? Is incest to be strictly defined as 1st cousin or closer? Or is 4th, 5th, 16th cousins eligible if the claim is simply "incest"?

So — let me guess — you’re going to vote for Obama instead, because his “all abortion, all the time” is preferable to Romney’s odious views?
Are you interested in Romney’s views or not? After all, you’re voting for him.
Should we hide what he believes???
Once again, we find that telling the truth is a gaffe.
The problem with Romney is that we really don’t know what he believes. In Mass he took a very different line than he does now on so many things that it is hard to find out what the real Mitt Romney believes. Personally I think he is a Republican Bill Clinton/John Edwards who has no core convictions and will say whatever he thinks people want to hear in order to get elected. I’ll vote for him against Obama but he is an even worse candidate than John McCain.
Honest response, Woodsman. I respect it.
I agree. Romney is Clinton in so many ways.
But of course! And, to assist those still-squeamish conservatives, just in time for the November elections! The official Romney Liberal Issue Blinders®! Available in many fashionable colors! Only $19.95! Available at your local GOP office...
Akin did mean to say that the rate of pregnancies from rape is low, and he attempted to distinguish between violent rape and unsubstantiated claims of rape.
Those are both legitimate, but as you say, it’s not permissible to talk about them.
What it did do, though, was finally flush Romney out.
Actually, though, Romney will see this as being to his benefit. He gets to claim being a rape, incest, life of mother exceptions type of pro-lifer.
More importantly, it tells us that Romney will appoint justices who will keep abortion legal so that rape and incest exceptions are covered.
Of course not. Nor should we be surprised at the leftist R0mney trying to corrupt the conservative Ryan, rather than learning from him.

Unemployment is worse in 44 states! That is my observation.
This discussion is a waste of time.
The return from the abortion culture is in small steps.
God won’t judge me for the unemployment rate, but he will for taking life with due process.
CORRECTION: God won’t judge me for the unemployment rate, but he will for taking life WITHOUT due process.
My guess is that Romney doesn’t care much about abortion one way or the other and probably won’t act on it at all. He is trying to form the most non-controversal stance at all so that it doesn’t become a big issue or distraction in the campaign. Same reason he took the stance he took in Massachusettes... path of least resistance to shut down an issue he doesn’t care about and sees as a wedge issue. I am not defending him by any means, just stating where I personally think his head is at.
And it starts...
Has Obama changed his position on Infanticide?
Do you believe abortion is infanticide?
Oh good, another tangent that diverts attention away from the terrible state of the country under Obama. Thanks Mr. Akin!
So all those ads by Obama are lies, then, right? We in Florida have been barraged with ads trying to scare women telling them Romney opposes abortion EVEN IN CASES OF RAPE AND INCEST.
So Romney-Ryan are liberal on abortion. That isn't going to be decided this presidential term, people! In fact, the States have been doing a much better job of proscribing abortion; there are no more abortion clinics in KY, for example, because of a new law requiring abortionists to have hospital privileges.
We need Romney/Ryan to DISRUPT the Obama regime. We need Romney/Ryan for a very specific set of jobs, related to economic freedom. Overturning Roe v Wade ain't among them. Not now.
“Unemployment is worse in 44 states! That is my observation.

The all or nothing Purity Caucus wont stand for this!
Besides you realize that Obama isnt all that bad? We can stand 4 more years if it means we can be pure in our hearts and minds. And if he gets out of hand we can scream for impeachment with slogans on poster boards or we can start CWII!
/Purity Caucus logic
That jerk needs to step down asap and let Steelman run and win.
But your response to NT wasn’t honest. At it wasn’t even responsive—it was evasive/dismissive ... so one more time:
“So let me guess youre going to vote for Obama instead, because his all abortion, all the time is preferable to Romneys odious views?”
In the words of the immortal Meatloaf, ‘What’s it going to be boy—Yes? or No?’
I agree with you, but not everyone agrees with us, and Romney isn’t playing to lose.

What are we to believe?
I'll still support him because we KNOW what we'll get with Obama and Romney has ALWAYS been a big supporter of Israel. I promise you'll want to support him for that reason alone.
Then we have Paul Ryan and Romney couldn't have picked a better VP candidate save Allen West.
In the end, we may just have to take a leap of faith.
Since the end of the primary season Romney has outed himself as:
Pro-Abortion
Pro-Gun Control
Pro-Homosexualism
As if this is relevant at all, unless there’s a 50-50 vote in the senate should he become VP.
The "rape exception" is nothing more than another "and then you can kill the baby" laws that is used for allowing unrestricted abortion.
Akin was answering a question....the people making a mountain out of it are: mercenary liberals who will try and make hay off of any gaffe AND pants-wetting conservatives who give the liberals encouragement.
>> Should we hide what he believes?
No, of course not.
Now, a question for you: should we work our best work to get an anti-Obama elected? Or should we strive to keep Obama?
Should we post ALL of Romney’s views, or just the ones that show him in the worst light?
By the way: what do you make of all the pro-life groups that have endorsed Romney/Ryan? Should I listen to their advice, or should I go a different way?
If you’re aware of any pro-life groups that have endorsed Obama (or Virgil Goode, or Tom whatshisname, or Ron Paul), please let me know.
Of course my response to NT was honest. His was just another in a long line of accusation about being an Obama supporter by those who hate to have Mitt’s dirty laundry aired in public.
Say anything against Mitt and you get accused of being an Obama supporter. I’ve been asked and have answered it hundreds of times.
To be clear: I would never vote for Obama or Romney.
In fact, those who push a candidate they know will lose a percentage of their base that could well be decisive are the ones whose motives should be questioned.
They are clearly Obama supporters.
Romney is lying about Ryan’s position. Ryan’s position mirrors the Catholic Church and the Pope’s position. Romney is trying to force Ryan to compromise his core beliefs to put on a united stand against life and in favor of abortion and homosexual rights.
When Ryan himself actually comes out and says he thinks Abortion is OK in the case of Rape or Incest or the “health” of the mother, then we will know that Satan has won over Ryan just as he has won over Romney.
Let us pray that the evil spirit that drove Romney to be a solid supporter of the homosexual lobby and the Abortion industry does not destroy the soul of Ryan.
It’s prudent to point out that RomneyCare in MA covers abortions far more broadly than ObamaCare.
We've heard all of the "it doesn't matter if a person is pro-life or not" crap before.
An innocent American is murdered EVERY 24 SECONDS in the United States. If that isn't relevant I don't know what is.
I cringed when I saw that statement from the Romney camp.
They could have been much more vague without putting Ryan on the spot like that.
You can condemn Akin’s statement and express empathy with rape victims WITHOUT directly contradicting your running mates convictions.
What a mess.
I thought that was what the ‘morning’ after pill was all about?
Women have been getting around the issue long before Roe v Wade with a D & C in the first trimester.
Except for accidents and self defense....there is NO defense for murder.
Amen, Brother!
Ephesians 6:
10 Finally, brethren, be strengthened in the Lord, and in the might of his power. 11 Put you on the armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the deceits of the devil. 12 For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood; but against principalities and power, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places. 13 Therefore take unto you the armour of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and to stand in all things perfect. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of justice, 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace: 16 In all things taking the shield of faith, wherewith you may be able to extinguish all the fiery darts of the most wicked one. 17 And take unto you the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit (which is the word of God). 18 By all prayer and supplication praying at all times in the spirit; and in the same watching with all instance and supplication for all the saints: 19 And for me, that speech may be given me, that I may open my mouth with confidence, to make known the mystery of the gospel.
It’s not relevant to the position he’ll be taking. He can make no change whatsoever to abortion law as vice-president unless there’s a 50-50 tie. Ryan is clearly pro-life and can be judged on his record in congress. Romney and his advisers are trying to get everybody on the same policy page (which is totally stupid but whatever).
Romney should have told them that the question was below his pay grade. Now, let’s talk about the economy . . .
Answer, no I will not vote for fubo...
I will not vote for mcromney either...
I will vote for the one that most closely reflects my views and beliefs....
If you vote for someone that does not reflect your view then you are merely lying to yourself...
or your views and beliefs are just not as important to you as having your “team” win...
once you cast your ballot for mcromney, you in fact giving your support to everything he stands for, including..
gun control..
abortion on demand..
gay rights..
liberal justices..
cap n trade..
and so on and so forth..
in other words, you are giving your defacto support to the liberal agenda..
You are, in fact, electing a socialist, and no, our socialist is not better than their socialist.
a socialist is a socialist, regardless of the vp choice..
So, I ask you, are you on the side of socialism, or not?
inquiring minds want to know...
All of his views should be reported, NT. He wants our votes, so I want to know all he believes and evidence for or against what he says.
The National Right to Life, which opposes abortion for rape or incest, endorsed Romney who does support abortion for rape or incest.
I assume that they have gone the route of many who have chosen what they believe to be pragmatism over their principles.
While I understand that, and I don’t fault legitimate, conservative ABOs, I choose not to follow that same route. My choice, my vote.
And, yes, it is possible to vote for Virgil Goode in Ohio since he is on the ballot. And, no, I doubt that any national right to life group will endorse a minor party, although I think that decision would be misguided.
how long before the 2016 cheerleading of palin/ryan or ryan/palin begins ??? will we even have to wait til november ???
“Akin was answering a question....the people making a mountain out of it are: mercenary liberals who will try and make hay off of any gaffe AND pants-wetting conservatives who give the liberals encouragement.”
Let me be clear. I am not harping on Akin because of his view of abortions related to rape. He could have easily answered the question by standing up for life. I am harping on him because of his complete and outlandish ignorance and stupidity with regard to basic physiology that he apparently uses as a basis for his views.
I saw nothing "odious" about what Akin said. His comments re: the rarity of pregnancy in cases of extreme stress (i.e. a rape, famine, and for crying out loud, even someone who is stressed about trying to get pregnant) are correct.
And I happen to agree that we should not punish one of the innocent parties if a pregnancy results from rape. Punish the perpetrator.
I've stated to those who are pro-abort, "Okay, lets keep abortion legal in cases of rape and incest and make it illegal otherwise. The only caveat would be that, starting at the point of requesting the abortion, the victim will be required to cooperate with the police in finding and punishing the guilty person or persons." They always try to change the subject, because that's not really why they want abortion to be legal.
