Both the Senate candidate & Gov. Romney need to exercise more care in how they address certain issues--or other people's comments. Both the Akin statement & the Romney comment thereon, could have been better framed--and in the case of the Akin statement, better avoided.

We must, where possible, consistent with principle, avoid tearing ourselves apart--or affording others an opportunity to do so. This is not the typical election.

How weird! Not a single word in the article about his reply later that same day...
(Rep) Todd Akin's out with a doozy of a response to his interview

Must have been pretty good since no mention is made, don't you think?

The guy obviously misspoke.

I see no evidence he misspoke; I think Akin meant everything he said.

in my opinion...if it is rape...take care of it the same or the next day....thats it.

I know lots of you dont agree with that....if it was my daughter or wife...that would be my suggested method.

after I find and kill the perp, that is.

All Mitt said was “clarify your position”

Really? Was that before or after he said "inexcusable"?

He engaged in dicta, he said some stuff that wasn’t necessary to his main point. He opposes abortion after rape, so fine. Then he got into that pregnancy after rape is rare, and why.

It just wasn’t necessary he ran his mouth too far. Should anyone therefore vote for a full on abortionist? No.

US elections are like this, let’s face it, they get decided on odd stuff that comes up and which no one cares about in the future.

Man up, apologize for the words and move on. We need that seat !

Then you need a new candidate. Sorry to say it, but this comment is "Macaca" on steroids with warp drive and phasers on overload. If Akin stays it will play nationwide in every cycle between now and November and has the potential to poison condidates both up- and down-ticket. This one is a game-changer, and not in a good way.

Indeed. McCaskill is one of the stupidest people in Washington (Biden, Boxer and Murray have the lead) and Akin found a way to look even dumber. Now that takes skill.

Last time I checked, “inexcusable” means inexcusable, not clarify your position. I doubt if Romney will appear on the same stage as Akin.

If that is how Akin feels about rape, he should have spouted off before the primary, not after. I am hoping that Palin’s choice Sarah Steelman becomes the nominee and Akin should drop out. He is a walking dead man, should we go down with the ship?

You know damn well it was after the fact.

Romney only said use some damage control, you have a FLAPEX on your hands.

“When was the last time Baraq’s or one of his supporters ever disavowed any outrageous statement uttered by a fellow traveler?”

I think Mitt did exactly right today, disapprove and move on... otherwise this darn thing would breed itself nationally in the MSM for weeks. At least now it is strictly state senate problem, which is bad enough!!!

Senator Ron Johnson (Wisconsin) just called for Akin to step aside. He is a Tea Party guy himself. What a shit-storm this has become. So totally unnecessary..

My position is that I am against abortion and it is a deeply personal matter even in the case of rape.
God Bless the Woman who despite rape brings the child to term and raises them, or puts them up for adoption.
That Woman is a Saint.
Most folks aren’t Saints, and I can understand how someone in that position could not cope.

I seem to recall the remark was along the lines of “may as well lay back and enjoy it”. I think it was the incumbent governor and it did a lot to swing the election to Richards, she of “Poor George ...” fame at the ‘92 DNC (later beaten for reelection by George Jr.). The difference between Democrat morons and Republican morons is the latter are always made to pay for their stupidity. Not fair but a fact of political life. There wasn’t much else Romney could say about this. Better to cut dead meat away early than let it fester attached. And yeah, that’s one Senate seat we needed to get back that’s probably gone.

Here - why don’t we just hand the election over to the American left?

As was pointed out several times in the multitude of "media firestorm" articles here yesterday, women who are victims of a "legitimate" rape, not consensual sex that is later reported as rape, are usually given an abortifacient when they're examined in the hospital.

Just one reason why women who are actually raped usually don't have children.

Quite the day for Willard. He throws a pro-life candidate under the bus and signs off on abortion in the case of rape and incest.

It's pathetic that "conservatives" are working with liberals to destroy a conservative candidate that has been leading in most polls.

Ain't Romneyism wonderful? He and his fellow RINOs are turning the conservative movement into a joke.

Agreed. This is not a miss statement, it's an admission of being a complete (and ignorant) fool.

Akin has no place in high office, none.
