LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- An autopsy report released Monday lists the death of a man shot in the head while his hands were cuffed behind him in an Arkansas patrol car as a suicide.
The state crime lab report, signed by three medical examiners, said the muzzle of a gun was placed against the right side of 21-year-old Chavis Carter's head when it was fired.

Is Captain Renault in charge here?
Is Deja Vu the proper term ?
I see Vince Foster’s forensic team is still in a job.
His family should:
1. Sue the gun manufacturer
2. Sue the handcuff manufacturer
3. Sue the gun and handcuff manufacturer
Some things never change.
But committing suicide by gun while cuffed is a bit hard to believe to say the least.
The Police Chief involved said the dash cam supports the story. Fine. Release the damned video then.
The ODD things about this are:
Officers found Carter slumped over in the seat, and assumed he shot himself.
You would think they would have HEARD the gunshot.
They searched him twice and found no weapon. What did they find after he shot himself ?
Typical Arkansas suicide...../s? My inlaws are from the area. Hear those kind of storys all the time.
At least he didn’t die of ‘natural causes’ like James Milan, another Clinton crony who was found decapitated.
Did he access Obama’s passport, college or birth records? How about his Man’s Country registration application?
During my military training at a police demonstration in Orlando I saw handcuffed people perform stunts that had to be seen to be believed. Some of the stunts were performed by amateurs (like jumping through cuffed hands to place your hands in front of you). The lesson was don’t fall into a trap by thinking handcuffs totally disable a suspect.
A limber young person of small stature could slip the handcuffs under his butts d end up cuffed in front. It’s quite a trick but just possible mid the gun were available in his pocket hd could shoot himself in the head.
I don’t believe for a moment that that is how this happened.
This is either one of the most poorly written or one of the most cleverly written articles (in the AP).
I haven’t seen all the videos, nor all the evidence, but from what I did see, there seems to be a complete lack of motivation on the part of the police to kill Chavis Carter.
There is not enough in the story or video that even begins to explain what happened.
Many years ago I was dealing with a guy who was a known criminal tho he was not charged with anything at the time.
One guy I talked to was the Mayor of Columbia, Alabama. He had been a star quarterback at Ole Miss in his younger days.
Anyway he told me the guy had a girlfriend, acquaintance or some relationship to a girl who was killed by gunshot. He said the funny thing is that it was ruled a suicide despite the fact that she had been shot with a .25 and a .45.
I always suspected corruption but never did know all the facts.
Perhaps he shot himself in the head BEFORE they cuffed and stuffed him, and it took him all that time to die. Ya, that’s the ticket.
I would be interested in your alternate explanation.
Also, he fired the gun three times. Worst suicide case in memory.
And his gun had a James Bond Silencer on it.
A drive by by a rival gang member
A murderous cop
That’s two. Until the dash cam video is released, they both sound more likely.
After seeing his photos, I don’t blame him for not wanting to return to prison.
I almost believe it. Why would the cops shoot him in the back seat? If they wanted to murder him, pull him out of the car and shoot him trying to escape? I’ll wait for the video. It just seems too stupid to use as an alibi, so it might be the truth.
Video of the stop here ...
The real issue is why a gun wasn't found AFTER two pat downs???
I thought of that too. Maybe not a rival, but a dealer who was worried that the 'kid' might rat him out. Question is how would a bystander be able to get to the police car and shoot a weapon without anyone hearing it? Secondly, how would be get the bullet to pass through the glass without breaking it ?
A murderous cop
Maybe. Based on the DASH CAM VIDEO (which seems to stop before Carter shoots himself), I don't see a bunch of 'hopped up' cops who can't wait to shoot somebody just for fun.
Until the dash cam video is released, they both sound more likely.
The demo video is bull hocky. When cops put cuffs on you they are so tight that it will cut your hand circulation. The cuffs will not slip up your arm, the cuffs will not go past your wrist bone and will allow only a tiny amount of movement of the hands. In the video provided it is simply silly to see the cuffs ridding up the forearm of the cops in the portrayal, silly and sickening. If you let me put the cuffs on I’ll guarantee they won’t be moving around like they did in the demo.
I’m not saying that it is impossible for the guy to shoot himself, that I don’t know the answer to, but the video demo is just plain silly.
Agree. Release the video.
Or maybe they haven’t had time to edit it yet.
To point out the rather disgustingly obvious, it would seem that the conclusive evidence here would be if the decedent’s feces was on the gun. If that is the case, all the rest is possible.
The gun is described as a “.380-caliber Cobra”. I gather semi-automatic as opposed to Derringer style. It is typically purchased as a small, concealable gun.
Lots more details:
The “tightness” of the cuffs has little to do with the ability to maneuver your hands. The factor determining that is the spacer between the cuffs. If that is the standard distance and the distance used on the the guy’s hands, then the JPD needs to review their cuff design.
Still I don’t see how they could miss a gun with two pat downs.
I had a friend that found himself in a nightmare scenario in Conroe, Texas, in the pre-concealed carry days.
He was handcuffed to the bench, inside the police office, but he still had a pistol hidden in his pants.
He said that he was quite concerned about how things would work out.
Two searches. First cursory search did not find weapon. Put him in the cruiser— he stashes the pistol. Second more thorough search— for sure not on him now. Cuff him put him back in... he picks up off floor and bends down and kaboom. It could (and apparently did) happen. All this with outstanding drug warrant known to the officers.. at least if any part of the article is correct.
What a waste, who were those guys in the truck hurting?
In Charlotte, a man named Calvin Christmas was cuffed and put in the back seat of a patrol car. He had been frisked by the policeman but ended up shooting the policeman in the back of the head with a gun he had well hidden and killed him. I remember this as the retrial happened when I first moved there. Everyone voted for the death penalty.
Except for the one black woman.
So he got life in prison instead. The jury sent flowers to the family as they were all so upset.
You got to love the hitters who were trained across the river in DC...
Are there THREE Fahmy Malak medical examiners now in Arkansas?
***Also, he fired the gun three times. Worst suicide case in memory.***
I remember a witness against Billy Sol Estes who shot himself several times in the stomach with a .22 rifle. Suicide they said.
