NYT's Maureen Dowd: 'Hysterical' Paul Ryan's Moderate Mien Hides 'Full-Tilt Virulence'
NewsBusters.org ^ | August 2012 | Clay Waters

Maureen Dowd really, really dislikes Paul Ryan, resenting even the man's moderate demeanor for hiding what she is sure is "full-tilt virulence." Her Sunday column for the New York Times, "Beware a Beautiful Calm," not only extensively quotes that well-known political commentator Tom Morello (of the left-wing rock band Rage Against the Machine, which hasn't released a studio album since the year 2000), but diagnosed Ryan as psychologically "hysterical."

What happens when you realize you are the machine you’re raging against?

Tom Morello, the Grammy-winning, Harvard-educated guitarist for the metal rap band Rage Against the Machine, punctured Paul Ryan’s pretensions to cool in a Rolling Stone essay rejecting R&R (Romney ’n’ Ryan) as R&R (rock ’n’ roll).

“He is the embodiment of the machine that our music has been raging against for two decades,” Morello writes, adding: “I clearly see that Ryan has a whole lotta ‘rage’ in him: A rage against women, a rage against immigrants, a rage against workers, a rage against gays, a rage against the poor, a rage against the environment. Basically, the only thing he’s not raging against is the privileged elite he’s groveling in front of for campaign contributions.”

....

...Ryan looks like a bonus Romney son, as Dan Quayle did with Bush senior. Republicans find the tableau of two rich white guys -- same shirts, different generations -- comforting. With W. and Cheney, the usual order switched and the vice-presidential candidate played the role of surrogate dad.

Where Ryan is like Cheney is in tone: at first blush, the Wisconsin congressman emanates a thoughtful, reassuring reasonableness, talking to reporters and sometimes Democratic lawmakers. Cheney’s deep voice, like the headmaster of a boys’ prep school, seemed moderate and measured, too, at first. But it is deceptive. Both men are way, way out there.

It is, to use a phrase coined by French doctors, la belle indifférence, or “the beautiful calm” of hysterical people. But the closer you look, the uglier it gets.

Just as Cheney, hunter of small birds and old friends, once defended cop-killer bullets and plastic guns that could slip through airport metal detectors, so Ryan, deer hunter, championed concealed guns and curtailing the background check waiting period from three days to one.

Just as Cheney was always willing to cough up money to guerrillas in Nicaragua and Angola but not to poor women whose lives were endangered by their pregnancies, so Ryan helped pay for W.’s endless wars while pushing endless anti-abortion bills, like one undercutting an exemption from the ban on using federal money for abortions in cases of rape or incest, and narrowing the definition of rape to “forcible rape.”

Dowd concluded:

Beyond the even-keeled Ryan mien lurks full-tilt virulence. A moderate demeanor is not a sign of a moderate view of the world.

Although I suppose nothing the NYTimes does should surprise me, I was very mildly surprised when the Times didn't can MO'D a couple of years ago, when she plagiarized a blog. Her writing is so cutesy and superficial, and her tone has become so hysterical, that she is no longer really useful to the left. To more expertly conceal their bias beneath a facade of calm intellectualism, the Times should replace Dowd with someone even more politically liberal who doesn't wear his heart on his sleeve.

Mean Maureen

By Dana M. Perino

October 16, 2010

One night her name came up at a dinner attended by members of both parties. Someone told a story about how at a past dinner she’d been a guest and had been droning on and on in a catty way and that one of the men at the table wrote on a cocktail napkin and passed it to another. It said, “What happened to her?” Sigh. Who the heck knows?

Perhaps she was a mean girl. Or maybe mean girls picked on her. Not in high school, but in adulthood — and now she can think how powerful she is by writing catty columns on America’s most liberal editorial page.

MoDo would look a lot hotter, and much more appropriate, in a straight-jacket. The cheese slipped off her burger a long time ago.

Maureen Dowd is a HYPOCRITE and a journo-ho...

The audacity to quote another HYPOCRITE and Music-ho...Tom Morello...who states about Paul Ryan

"“He is the embodiment of the machine that our music has been raging against for two decades,” Morello writes, adding: “I clearly see that Ryan has a whole lotta ‘rage’ in him: A rage against women, a rage against immigrants, a rage against workers, a rage against gays, a rage against the poor, a rage against the environment. Basically, the only thing he’s not raging against is the privileged elite he’s groveling in front of for campaign contributions.”

Tom Morello, who's 'ICON' is none other than "Che Guevara"...

From 'Humberto Fontova', who writes at Babalublog about 'who' Morello really is...

"A Rock group (RATM) boasts that the central inspiration to their "irreverent" music and image is the co-founder of a Stalinist regime that outlawed Rock Music, Graffiti and "disrespect to authorities"--all under penalty of forced labor, torture and firing squad."

"Union activists" (RATM) have made central to their music and image a Stalinist who outlawed strikes under penalty of prison and firing squad."

"By no means can Cuban workers go on strike!" declared Cuba's "Minister of Industries" (Che Guevara) on June 26, 1961. "Cuban workers must adjust to life a collectivist social order!"

"Peace activists" have made central to their music and image the boastful blusterer of the following:"

“My nostrils dilate while savoring the acrid odor of gunpowder and blood!...Violence is inevitable! To establish Socialism rivers of blood must flow. The victory of Socialism is well worth millions of atomic victims!”"

"(Harvard-educated) Tom Morello also professes immense pride in his black heritage. The icon on his guitar and amplifier went on record that:"

"The Negro is indolent and spends his money on frivolities and drink. The European is forward-looking, organized and intelligent...The negro has maintained his racial purity by his well known habit of avoiding baths." The regime Che he-co-founded jailed and tortured the longest-suffering black political prisoners in modern history. "

“He is the embodiment of the machine that our music has been raging against for two decades,”

There are people who actually talk like that in public?

First, Maureen calling anybody hysterical? I love irony.

Second, you all are probably eventually going to get sick of hearing this...but nothing says raging against The Machine quite like drawing huge paychecks from Sony for twenty years.

She must be getting talking points from somebody in Obama's camp. This is going way, way back.

Phil Crane also voted against the measure (1988) -- it sounds like it was a libertarian thing.

Curiously, no plastic guns were being manufactured at the time when the ban went through.

Both Maureen Dowd and Paul Ryan are Irish Catholic. Seems to me Ryan represents everything good that Dowd has abandoned: a deep Catholic faith and a deep commitment to reason and rationality. Dowd lives in the here and now and follows the whims of her feelings.

I think Maureen just needs to get laid.

It’s amazing what a couple of years without getting any can do to a woman., makes them mean.

One night with the high hard one would probably make her as sweet as sugar for a couple of days at least.

Maureen Dowd really, really dislikes Paul Ryan...

Correction - Maureen Dowd really, really dislikes all Republicans and she especially hates the conservative type... and has even more hate if they're male.

As far as I can tell, that's her ONLY claim to fame. She's good at hating us. Period. Bitter, bitter, bitter woman.

I heard she drinks too much because she doesn’t like the way her life has gone—no man in her life, never been married, and no kids. Ya’ think maybe she did too much male bashing and it finally rubbed off on her persona?

She has the easiest job in the Country, short of Sports Radio Host.

1) Wake up.
2) Write article reinforcing a negative stereotype of any Republican threat as Stupid, Evil or both.
3) Go to cocktail party with other high profile liberals.
4) Repeat.
