Via the Examiner, a golden moment from “Morning Joe” in which McCaskill walks the vanishingly fine line between being deeply offended at the thought of Akin representing Missouri and yet not so deeply offended that she’d want to see him disqualify himself immediately. If you’re depressed by all the Akin coverage today, let this thought comfort you: The Democrats worked very hard, and spent a lot of money, to make sure he was her opponent in November. They banked on him screwing up spectacularly, and now he has — so spectacularly and so soon, in fact, that this might blow up right in their faces by landing a steadier, sturdier Republican candidate on the ballot in his place.

In the weeks before the August 7 primary, McCaskill and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee aired ads that ostensibly attacked Akin, but actually boosted his candidacy. The ads called said him a “true conservative” and questioned if he was “too conservative,” hardly a negative in a GOP primary. One radio ad ended by noting that Akin “has been endorsed by the most conservative leaders in our country: Michele Bachmann and Mike Huckabee.”
McCaskill did air ads against all the Republicans in the race, but only the Akin ones included such glowing testimonials. With a wink and a nod, Democrats placed their bets that the conservative congressman would be her weakest foe in the fall, even if they’re never publicly acknowledged it.
According to WaPo, the combined $1.5 million that McCaskill’s campaign and Democratic groups spent in the last weeks before the primary “attacking” Akin as a true conservative was more money than his own team spent on ads over the course of the entire campaign.

It doesn’t seem likely that anyone can step in and save this race at this late date. Especially in Missouri where vote fraud is the norm.
Another reason to show him the door...Claire wants him to stay.

What is all this establishment talk of Jim Talent replacing him on the ballot? That makes no sense when there are two conservatives that ran neck and neck with him in the primary. It would seem to me that choosing Jim Talent might really piss of the base and then we still lose the seat.
What is the big deal about Talent? Why do people want him on the ballot when he didn’t even run in the primary? Something stinks and it smells like GOPe.
The pubs are on fire to snuff out Akin but wouldn’t dare even ask Obama if he was ever a citizen of Indonesia, let alone define what a natural born citizen is. So I am no longer Republican and they will never see another dime from me ever.

I agree. I think it would look better to just toss a coin, between Brunner and Steelman. Easier for all the parties to accept the outcome. Installing some old-guard establishment geezer out of a smoky back-room isn’t particularly a recipe for enthusiasm these days. And it would be a slight against two candidates who actually made the effort and put a lot of work into their campaigns.
Very true. After this, no Republican who says breathtakingly stooopid things about rape will be safe from the crosshairs. Which, by the way, is the way things have always been. I'd like to see a single standard converged to mean both parties, but we can only control the ones on our side of the aisle.

Akin said something stupid...but when you have the Liberal PhonyCons all pushing for him to drop out...something is not right. Even more disturbing is how liberal “Conservative” talk radio is becoming.
Talent lost the seat because of that idiot Rush Limbaugh going after Michael J. Fox for allegedly feigning his Parkinson’s symptoms.
Talent is a loser.

There’s nothing wrong with calling out one of your one when they screw up badly, its the difference between the right and left, higher expectations and actual standards.
Let’s keep two things separate.
How conservative he is has zero to do with how stupid he is. There are smart and stupid of every political stripe. Don’t mix the two and say someone is smart or stupid because he agrees or disagrees with you.
That “idiot” was correct about Michael J. Fox. Fox admitted it years later. He had been varying his meds, which is common, and deliberately chose to tape the spot when he was in a bad way. But “going after Fox” at the time might not have been the best political move.
