Wayne Brady Apologizes For Trig Palin-Jeff Ross Joke

This letter has taken me a few days to compose because of the conflicting emotions that I've experienced since the day of the Roast and it's subsequent airing. The environment of the Roast is a comedic (hopefully), tasteless (mostly always), affair that encourages everyone to out-filth each other. Not normally what I'm known for, right? But, when I was invited, I jumped at the chance to play outside of my perceived "norm" and have fun. The Jeff joke was written for me and at the end of the day I take full responsibility for saying it. It wasn't meant as a slam to Trig and at the time I didn't see it that way.

I could defend it as a performer, but I would rather apologize from the bottom of my heart as a father. I understand how a parent, who loves their child, who tries to nurture and shield them when they cannot defend themselves, would take offense.. I have many times experienced this feeling. I've had awful things said about my daughter.. Violent and most times racial stabs. Being in the spotlight I have built a thick skin to these sorts of things. My daughter ( who's now old enough to understand ) is another story. That being said I write this letter with sensitivity and a strong stance of responsibility for my actions.

I thank everyone who's expressed their opinion for reminding me that my voice is heard... It's easy to forget sometimes in front of cameras and lights.

To the Palins, please know that no malice or harm was meant. To the other families who were touched negatively, I hope you'll be able to accept this apology as well.

I've always said that people in the public eye should be held responsible for what you say and I'm no hypocrite. Thanks for reading and letting me express my side.

And we just lost a frequent participant today, Phyllis Diller.

I met her when I was very young. She was in her late 40's back then and was a very beautiful woman. They made her up to look bad. Another actress I met who was popular I met at a party in the Rainbow Room when I was very young. I was kinda drunk and she was a little Jewish woman who was telling me the funniest jokes. Lordy she had a foul mouth. Her name was Estelle Gettleman AKA Estelle Getty from the Golden Girls. She was insanely funny and looked very young compared to how she looked on TV.

I have ran in to other celebrities. Ann Margaret when I was very young. A stunning woman at the time. I once sat in a room with Buddy Hackett who was a wonderful person. Since there were kids around including me he would not tell any off color jokes. Another fellow I met who was extremely nice was Bob Hope. He had the kindest eyes. Let's see, who else? I met Arnold Schwarzenegger when I was a kid really before he became famous. The women loved him. He is shorter than you would expect. I got a bit drunk with Dennis Rodman once. He is insane. A nutcase. He had gotten off a go-fast boat and had shorts on. He had the oddest calves. His legs looked like something that you would see on an insect. I hung out with Jay Leno one night. He is a very cool guy but just one of the guys. Met Hank Williams awhile back who is so talented he is spooky. He can pick up anything and play it.

I just ran in to these people over time. No rhyme or reason to it...

When I was a kid the roasts were on television and contained nothing but riotous humor without the filth...Lucille Ball, Bob Hope, Dean Martin and all the rest...especially Don Rickles.

None of these guttersnipes have any class at all, and they are certainly not funny when all they do is see how may times they can make a sex joke with the f-bomb in it.

I miss Lucille Ball and all those of her era. It is a sign of the times, Mr. Brady, that you are in the game of outfilthing us all.

It is that for which you should apologize to us all.

I had the displeasure of being invited to a Friars Roast once. It was so dirty, pornographic and nasty I didn’t understand half of the jokes! I do remember giving Aretha Franklin a cheer after she threw the bird at a comedian who was making the worst fat jokes about her.
