‘Machine Gun’ Kelly: buyback takes 509 firearms off streets
New York Post ^ | August 21, 2012 | Jessica Simeone

A powerful Calico 9mm — with a 50-round magazine — was among the 509 guns taken off the streets at a Queens gun buyback and laid out yesterday at Police Headquarters.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, looking like a modern-day Eliot Ness in a sharp pinstriped suit and French cuffs, handled some of the more powerful firearms while showing off the deadly cache, which he said cost the city about $85,000.

“We think it’s money well spent,” Kelly said, as he surveyed the haul, which included an AK-47 and a TEC-9.

Jessica Simeone had to run out and buy a new set of kneepads after writing this slavering puff-piece

And wipe off her chin. There appears to be no dividing line between the government and the media any more.

I’m really getting tired of NYC

I've been fed up with those people for years. It isn't any coinicidence that hard left anti-gun pro-tax government worshipers keep getting re-elected by large margins there. The vast majority of the NY electorate thinks that way too.

It doesn’t even begin to touch the root of the problem.

What problem?

Au contriare, people likely to sell guns to a “buy-back” have higher odds of having inherited something valuable, the prior owner (spouse, parent) having paid a great price for it (money or personal risk), then having died the ignorant recipient have no idea what it is or what to do with it and “just want it out of the house”.

An ugly old Sten Gun brought home from WWII (and duly registered) doesn’t look like much, but (thanks to US Code 922(o)) is irreplaceable and could easily fetch a five-digit price. Engraved/inlaid work can also have high price and significant artistic value. These things do happen.

Even most of the mundane crap turned in have pawn value exceeding the “no questions asked” price of a “buy-back”. Then there’s the point that the true crap turned in in is worth nowhere near as much (rusted-beyond-repair frames, missing major parts, etc.) as taxpayer money wasted thereon - but others have addressed that.

What problem?

Why people kill each other. It is a moral problem. Consult Genesis for the case history of Cain and his brother, Abel.

Can’t have that nasty 2 cylinder internal combustion engine. Not green you know. Maybe a 2 cylinder Stirling external combustion, burning methane from cows?

If they want to get firearms off the street perhaps they’re first focus should be the police department

Particularly the NYPD. In the recent (justified) shooting of a perp outside the Empire State Building, two cops fired 16 rounds, hit the perp and dropped him like a poleaxed steer, but also wounded 9 bystanders, 3 of them hit by actual bullets, the rest by fragments and possibly shrapnel from objects hit by bullets. But the cops were only EIGHT FEET, less than 3 yards, from the bad buy.

In the video, one cop appears not to even be aiming at the bad guy, but somewhere else entirely. Even Bloomie seemed to confirm that at a press conference last week, saying the police may have shot AT some individuals. That's what it looked like to me as well.
