Renewable energy is their pipe dream. No cost is too great. No failure causes them to take a second look. Somehow they believe that if they just keep cramming these crap technologies down our throats that they'll eventually work.

The key legal term, in there, by the way, is “renewable”, ie. meaning whatever they deem to be “Renewable” and enforcing compliance toward that goal.
This is government regulation of its own failing investments which will invariably lead to corruption in order to make itself look good on the books, like the Amtrak disaster.
Politics and business are the worst of associations, and it is even worse than government welfare to some businesses... because, really, it is business which pays for government, initially.
