DENVER (AP) -- There will be more whole grains on school lunch menus this year, along with a wider selection of fruits and vegetables and other healthy options. The challenge is getting children to eat them.
"We don't want healthy trash cans. We want kids who are eating this stuff," said Kern Halls, a former Disney World restaurant manager who now works in school nutrition at Orange County Public Schools in Florida.
At a School Nutrition Association conference in Denver this summer, food workers heard tips about how to get children to make healthy food choices in the cafeteria.

All you have to do is to go to your government ration store...just like Iran, Iraq etc. Won't that be fine!!
How will we pay for it??
You will be required to join a local union in charge of regional work. You will be told what to do and when to do it. The government will furnish you with scrip at the end of the day.
Uh, huh. I think your gonna get the former.
The article is down right disturbing. Food coaches? My daughter had a “food coach”- me. Good luck forcing kids to eat vegetables. One of things studied in my nutrition class was how to hide them or dress them up to get kids to eat them. And good luck with introducing them to new, culturally diverse foods. I can only think that the consultants to this program are affirmation action graduates that learned little about nutrition and children. Making a big issue out of food with kids also has the unintended consequences of producing eating disorders. I wonder if they’re covered under Obamacare.
Even her husband doesn’t like her healthy food. Give him a cheeseburger, fries and an ice-cream any day.
The problem lies in thinking you're going to "teach" kids this kind of thing in the roughly 20 minutes (30 max) that they have to stand in line, pay, get a seat, eat, clean up and return to class. If they haven't learned how to eat half-decent food early on and consistently, from whomever's raising them, all the healthy food in the world isn't going to make a difference. They'll make it through the day hungry until they get home (or wherever) to the junk they know will be waiting for them, and as said, nothing will benefit but the cafeteria trash cans.
Since when did ribs and french fries become health food??
I didn’t eat vegetables until I was in my twenties and learned to buy them fresh and stir-fry - thank you, Irene Kuo.
Now how do you translate fresh vegetables and stir frying into feeding three hundred kids in twenty minutes, four sittings? You don’t. You use frozen vegetables, and they sit in warming pans for a couple hours.
When my oldest grandson was in grade school, he ate hot dogs and mac and cheese for lunch and dinner 7 days a week for 2 years and then switched to chicken fingers and mac and cheese for the next four years. His fav thing for breakfast cold cheese pizza. Never been sick a day in his life. Now finishing college - 6’2”, weighs 180. Runs track, plays tennis and golf, straight A student, very polite hardworking young man. Still eats hot dogs and mac and cheese every night for dinner, except on Saturday when he has a steak and baked potato and Sunday when he has shrimp and pasta. He will eat beets and broccoli tops and drinks a glass of orange juice daily but no other fruits or vegetables.
If he ever gets married, perhaps his wife can get him to try something new, or not....
Michelle Obama does not look like she eats any of the puke she is suggesting as “food”.
There is a reason she looks like a wookie or they call her mooshel.
(cue the picture with the french president’s wife walking up stairs)
This is a likability ploy since Mr. Obama’s numbers are falling fast.
Now, Moochelle’s profession, before she surrendered her law license, was a lawyer and ‘rain maker’ for the hospital where she worked.
At no time did she study as a nutritionist or dietitian. Therefore why should anyone listen to this totally unqualified woman what constitutes ‘healthy” eating. Her dietary competence works so well that her husband hits the nearest fast food restaurant at every opportunity.
Easy answer. Slather everything with a vegetable puree’—Ketchup.
It's working just about as well as having Hillary bake cookies worked.
“When my oldest grandson was in grade school, he ate hot dogs and mac and cheese for lunch and dinner 7 days a week....”
And this points out another issue that a good nutritionist knows- kids go on food jags where they will eat only one thing, eat very little for a while, etc. The best way to deal with it is not to make it an issue. I think I ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches every day for nearly a year in high school. Food should not be so focused on as an issue with kids. It’s fine to point out the (poorly designed) food pyramid, tell kids fruits and veggies are healthy, but to make it such a focal point is not good. And the article said they weren’t giving out recipes. If they want kids to eat more vegetables then that’s exactly what they should be doing so they can be incorporated into a diet and not just be a lump of peas on their plate that will not be touched. I think that’s why we have classic family recipes like Chicken a la King and pot roast. Mashing up pot roast veggies, covering them with shredded meat and gravy work like a charm with my daughter. Picking peas and carrots out a casserole- rarely. It’s almost a no brainer. It just seems almost, if not completely, criminally misguided.
This soon won’t be an issue as We The People will be sending Moochelle back to Chicago with her Marxist God. Fumigating our White House will be a priority, ya think?
Don’t be silly, folks. The target is obesity. The goal is achieved if the kids won’t eat anything ....
if you want skinny kids, follow barry’s choom example. do alot of drugs, it will keep your weight down,
you will be too busy copping a buzz than to worry about eating.
might even try some “coke” too. & that is not a soda.
what a great example. please do not let our grandchildren to read his books.
let’s stick to the lives of Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Hamilton, Lincoln, Reagan, et. al. (Adams, surely and alot more, i am missing alot here)
It would be totally disgusting to have our kids read about the obamanations early life.
blessings, bobo
“if you want skinny kids, follow barrys choom example. do alot of drugs, it will keep your weight down,”
So will HIV, which is a distinct possibility for a lifetime member of a Chicago, Gay bathhouse.
Probably easier to just get a new first lady.
“You didn’t make that sandwich!”
Or worse yet (but more likely in an institutional setting) canned! I can't abide canned vegetables, especially the green ones. Ever notice that sickly brown-gray-yellow-green color canned peas, spinach or green beans are? When they're that color, the flavor and no doubt the nutrition are equally disgusting.
She has campaigned against obesity and has championed health eating.
But when First Lady Michelle Obama met celebrity chef Paula Deen she apparently ate like a horse!
The TV star told the Washington Examiner that she and Michelle had more in common than you might expect.
She said:
“She probably ate more than any other guest I’ve ever had on the show”
“She kept eating even during commercials.”
Thanks for the ping!
Minding OUR freaking business for us is a "likability ploy"??? I can't imagine that making them any more likeable to anyone, even lefties. Well, maybe childless lefties, of which I admit there are many.
They had Hill bake cookies?? I could have TOLD them that was a doomed effort. The only thing having that witch make cookies is going to do is give people creepy thoughts of Hansel and Gretel.
Oh, yes, for Good Housekeeping the first time Bill ran for President.
Oh, OK, that early in the cycle when few knew who or what she was, I can see it. Now it's more like [shudder] "Collectivism -- it's what's for dinner!"
You notice the TV exposes never show the trash cans after lunch at those model schools. They show the kids (acting for the cameras) just loving the crap. Ask them off camera and you get a different story or better check the trash cans for the real story. If they were such great lunches, why do many of them ban the kids from bringing their own lunches? I know as a kid, I would be making a fortune selling black market Twinkies on the sly. Finally, I took peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to school for 12 years. If we were lucky, we got a bologna sandwich every once in a while. We did have fruit and vegetables (from our garden) and the old standby 2 cent milk. Didn’t die, didn’t starve and greatly appreciated the extras when we got them.
PS. Grape jelly most of the time as it was much cheaper than my favorite strawberry jam!
When mooooooooochele stop ordering 10 big macs, 8 large fries, 6 apple pies and a large diet coke as a midnight snack then maybe they will listen, nah they still won’t listen and she is to stupid to know that.
I don't see what the problem is. Just issue a decree that all children will eat their kale or their parents will face criminal charges--with the possibility of losing their custody of the community's cheerdrins.
Must have been in her “headband” epoch. Ah’m not gon’ sit around home bakin’ cookies and bein’ all Tammy Wynette, Stand By Yore Man. Immediately preceding the “Rodham” era, which preceded the “Hillary!” period. When you think about it, the woman has managed to get herself in the history books, and has made herself eminently, thoroughly qualified to be POTUS, G-d forbid.
