Funny you mention the geese. I saw a HUGE flock this morning on my way to work — south SF Bay near Alviso (right adjacent to the bottom of the Bay). It was unusual to see them this early.
Chemult has an average January low of about 20F, only a few degrees below the forecast for the coming nights!
So did I. Kinda reminds me of the intense snowstorm that passed through a place in northern Oklahoma two or three years ago that dropped the temperature to -31 degrees below zero for a short time. I thought it was an error but it was confirmed as being just that.

Up here in Northern MN the trees are turning fall colors in spots the local tribes told me they haven’t seen this in many years... It IS sporadic, but the fire maples are starting to turn here as well as are other species...

I moved here in 79 and think this last decade was the worst weatherwise since then.
I have the Puget Sound Energy bills, and they detail average temp this month vs last year this month, going back about 4 years worth, and there is no doubt the last 3-5 years have been MUCH cooler than average!
And I plant gardens every year, and this year the yield is the best it’s been since about 1997.
PS I live south of Auburn at the north end of Pierce county.
As much as I don’t like long periods of cold winter, I would welcome one this year just to kill the mosquitoes here in Dallas. It’s been brutal after last year’s mild winter.
It’s been right cool up here in NW Oregon, so the fact that there is a freeze warning in the high desert doesn’t surprise me.
I hope it’s close to the annual forest fires we have, and will help those folks.
Unfortunately, according to our local news it appears that your mosquitoes are moving south to Houston.

A freeze warning isn’t always a general affectation. Low lying areas can indeed wax colder than the general forecast temperature.
Did you live in Minnesota in 1996 when the state record for cold was exceeded by 1 degree at -60F?

My family usually starts hearing crickets around our place in early August. We started hearing them in mid-July. (The "old wive's tale" suggests that when you hear your first crickets you can count 6 weeks before your first frost.)
Everything seems accelerated this summer.
The local geese have been flocking up into bigger flocks and making their treks out to the corn fields earlier as well.
I was at the Highland Games in Baker City, Oregon two years ago (August 27th), and it was snowing in the mountains surrounding the city. The high in Baker City was 50 that day, and it was raining and windy. Not my idea of summer weather (except in San Francisco).
One of my co-workers was on a hunting trip nearby that weekend, and she said that it got into the high 20s at night, so this kind of weather in SE Oregon is not unprecedented.
Where I'm headed later today (about 4,250 ft msl), tonight's forecast is 6 degrees lower than the all-time recorded low for the date in 1910.

My weather forecaster is Myrtle, my neighbor’s turtle. So far, she hasn’t built her winter hidey-hole.
And I’ve not seen a wooly creapy crawler, a sure cold weather sign.
I’ve seen several rattlers, which means there’re bunch of rats and mice close by.
And my corns don’t hurt, so I’m forecasting six more weeks of 95 degree weather! (Hee Hee)
