E-MAIL SHARE FONT-SIZE 8/23/2012 8:37 AM ET (RTTNews) - First-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits unexpectedly showed a modest increase in the week ended August 18th, according to a report released by the Labor Department on Thursday.
The report showed that initial jobless claims edged up to 372,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 368,000. The modest increase came as a surprise to economists, who had expected jobless claims to slip to 365,000 from the 366,000 originally reported for the previous week.
Additionally, the Labor Department said the less volatile four-week moving average crept up to 368,000 from the previous week's revised average of 364,250.

IOW, just LAST WEEK 372,000 poor souls lost jobs with NO replacement job, so they had to file for unemployment benefits.
Aw Jeez, where’s my pic of Jack Carson.
playing the ‘unexpected’ game, I’m gonna be drunk by noon.
Unexspec....hic. Unesphect...hic Unex...hic
- The Kingfish
ROFLMAO....that was funny!
As expected, Bush’s fault.
...have you ever seen such a surprised group of media financial guru’s....they are always surprised “unexpectedly”
when bad numbers for Odungo appear
More Serfs for obastard.
More rot for America.
The jobs aren’t coming back without fundamental change back to some of our former principles of economy, business, trade, government and God.
With all the bad press the word “unexpected” has gained over the last 3 years, I was amused they had the nerve to put it in their headline!
I just HAD to post it. I couldn’t help myself. LOL.
Dear Media: Numbers going DOWN would be unexpected. Numbers going UP are the norm. Get it right or hand in your “observer of what’s happening” license!
Republican President = EXPLODED!
Democrat President = crept up
Republican President = LEAPED!
They keep doing the same $hit week after week expecting things to improve when the boat anchor is still in the White House.
There's a definition in there, somewhere, of insanity.
I know we all sort of laugh about these reports, but there is something very unseemly, even sinister, in a Bureau of Labor Statistics that is so blatantly political.
Once upon a time, soon after AlGore invented the Internet, children in school were taught the only websites to be trusted had a “.gov” or “.edu” suffix. Now we know that, with a few exceptions (eg, NIH, CDC and others in the public health arena) we cannot trust a lot of “.gov” or “.edu” websites to provide impartial information.
I remember when the BLS was viewed as an apolitical, reliable source of information. Not any longer. The BLS has become a de facto propaganda arm of the Obama Campaign, something we here feared when the Obama White House tried to take control of the census last year.
To which the Democrats will say, it’s much better than the almost 800,000/mo. when BO took office.
Of course, they don’t explain to the uninformed that the ONLY month that unemployment was that high was Jan. ‘08, when business owners realized that the clueless voters had elected a Marxist as president, and he was taking office Jan. 21. They knew they would have a very tough time with Leftists in charge, and they were right.
Trending up .....any bets on when it gets to 400,000....
My pick....last week of October.
And the deficit grew by another 1.1 Trillion dollars for the year! How Obama’s poll numbers stay as good as they are is a complete mystery. I suppose his propaganda team really is that good. Meanwhile the GOP is stepping in every bit of quicksand they can find.
It must be Thursday!
previous week’s revised figure of 368,000
Along with “unexpectedly” comes the usual revised figure without any mention it is UP from the official figure dispensed last week which was unexpected at that time.
One news article, AP I believe, said this shows there is an indicator of a slow employment recovery. They are wrong, it is a further piece of evidence the press is so far up the backside of this president they may as well be his naval.
Cutter: Obama Has Created More Jobs Than the Reagan Recovery

Hopefully this isn’t a cause for more easing by the fed. They seem to have a hair trigger. You hear me Fed? Stay off the crack!
If, every time the word “unexpectedly” was used when describing the “rise in jobless claims”, everyone in the country were expected to drink a shot, we’d be one wasted nation right about now.
Seriously, isn’t that MEME becoming tired by now, even for the MSM?
Just a “modest” increase. They’ll have to resurrect the old “GOP in White House” style book for after January 20, 2013.
Democrats have trillion+ dollar deficits cause they can't do math.
372,000/wk = ~1,500,000/mo.
I am so shocked ... didn’t see this coming!
When it goes up, it’s unexpected.
When it goes down, it’s unexpected.
When it stays the same, it’s unexpected.
These ‘econo-misseds’ never expect to get it right, I suppose...........
I just read someplace — gotta find it — that at some meeting they indicate they will do another QE.
A Republican president would have been hounded from office more than a year ago with this economic record.
Near term: don’t spend ten cents on ANYTHING that you don’t need until the end of October. Every retail sale of ANY item is just another vote for Obama.
For the past three years they've been using the same old tired terms to try to put a positive spin on a never ending stream of bad economic news: healing, recovery, modest improvement, postive trend, momentum, etc. It's all window dressing for their guy in the White Hut.
I've got too many friends either own small businesses, including stores, or work for them.
However, I don't think a bad economy needs anything more to remain bad than Obama's promise to let the Bush tax cuts expire.
We have a new Qualifier too.....’modestly increased’.
So sick of the media in this country.
“clueless voters had elected a Marxist as president”
Man....I hate being right all time (only joking). But......I am right about this, as gasoline prices rise, unemployment goes up. That is the way Obama continues to destroy the USA economy and new job increases. That any sane American can vote for this America hater, Obama is far beyond me!!!
“unexpectedly”?
These gub mint projectors are worse than the weather man.
“Aw Jeez, wheres my pic of Jack Carson.”
If you are referring to the pix of the guy with his head in his hand saying “Jeez, not this **** again”, I don’t think that is Jack Carson. I have been trying to figure just who it is though.
I just spent $300 repairing my dryer and I bought some Romney/Ryan window stickers, is that allowed? ;o)
Oh, wait, that was last summer. This was supposed to be “Recovery Summer II: Electric Boogaloo”.
Why would anyone think the polls showing him ahead or close are any more legitimate than these BLS numbers?
Great points!
Where are the reporters pointing out the hourly rise in the cost of gas...oh right, there’s a RAT in office. That “reporting” only occurs when a GOP is POTUS.
:-)
Just wait until Romney/Ryan win and watch the sudden re-emergence of...THE HOMELESS AT THANKSGIVING!
And speaking of bias....ever notice the news reports of a shooting always picture a gun in the corner of the screen but if there is a stabbing they never picture a knife?
Unexpectedly? That’s unprecedented!
Try watching the news on ABC/CBS/NBC/PBS and your question will be answered. The ability of the media to "shape the news" is still very strong. The difference between Drudge and my local liberal newspaper is stunning.
The media is Obama's propaganda machine.
The only reason to keep up with these jobless claims is to get drunk!
Preious week claims were 366,000 and revised up to 368,000. Expect the new number to be revised up to 375,000...at the very least.
“Yahoo headline is that “Jobless claims rise as labor market HEALS slowly”.”
My headline would be that “Yahoo eggheads can’t admit that they have been on the unintellectual side of the issues all along now, and are generally clueless about reality”.
