Former Disney worker expected to sue over head scarf dispute
LA Times ^ | August 13, 2012 | Kate Mather

A former Disney employee is expected to announce Monday a federal lawsuit against the entertainment giant, saying she was harassed and unfairly removed from her hostess job after refusing to remove her head scarf while at work.

Imane Boudlal, who is Muslim, said she had worked at Storyteller's Cafe in Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa in Anaheim for two years when she began wearing her hijab to work in August 2010. Boudlal said she was told wearing her scarf was a violation of company policy, and she would either have to remove it, cover it with a hat or take a job working out of public sight.

Boudlal, now 28, refused. She has not worked at Disney since Aug. 21, 2010, said Mark Rosenbaum, an attorney from the ACLU of Southern California who is representing Boudlal.

The hihab is a garment that is occupationally hazardous making the wearer a danger to self and to others. Imagine that material getting caught up in a gear system etc. If Muslims insist on wearing their 'religious garbs' when working, they must sing a waver that they will not sue in the advent of an accident. The warning should carry over into health care....."you have been warned that your costume could be dangerous to your health" The responsibility is yours.

One more Muslim being pushed forward to complain that the world is not Muslim.....a silly law suit. Frankly as a nudist, I should not have to wear clothes to work..........

We don’t wear hijabs in America! If you don’t like it, go back to the sewer you crawled out of. You won’t be missed.

This is a nuisance suit. The expectation is that Disney will quietly settle this. Only Disney is renown for maintaining grooming & personal appearance standards. So maybe not?

Do you mean to say for two years she didn’t see the religious necessity of wearing a hijab and then it occured to her to “test” her employer under the guise of some faked religiosity?

Wow, can there be a counter-suit for abuse of the judicial process?

Dress code is still dress code. If a business wants a particular image they have that’s right. What’s next? Will she get a job at Hooters and then complaint she isn’t allowed to cover up like it’s 10° outside and she’s forced to serve beer and bar b q pork?

How would you like to see someone in a hijab, boarding the service stairs, to clean your airliner, prior to your departure?

United 1492, Monday 20 Aug, Seattle to Denver.

At about 5-6, 180, he/she could have carried anything on board.
Coming from the tarmac, who knows what security checks may have been avoided?

Imane Boudlal, who is Muslim, said she had worked at Storyteller's Cafe in Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa in Anaheim for two years when she began wearing her hijab to work in August 2010.

So, for 2 years, she either hid her affiliations, or felt it was ok for her to work her job without her scarf.

Then, suddenly, without warning - she opted to change her 'uniform' and demands her employer support her decision. Just a silly question, if she had made this condition known (wearing a head scarf) known at the onset of her employment - would Disney have hired her? Probably not.

When you agree to work and accept a paycheck - you perform the job when, where and how your employer tells you to do it. If not, then you need to give your employer notice that you are not willing to honor the terms you agreed to when you accepted the job. 2 weeks notice is customary and expected.

Why is it that liberals lecture us about separation of church and state, and imposing religious values in society and all that? But then in a case such as this, we have to bend over backwards and change standards to accomodate someone’s religion. How does this make sense????

Before you hire on at any big company they explain the dress code and you sign an agreement to abide by it. It appears that she hired on with the intention of breaking the dress code to gain money and attention. if she wins I can't help but wonder how what percentage of her jackpot will go to terrorist organizations.

Disney will quietly settle this

They'll move her to an appropriate theme site where she will be in costume.
