It works for the mob.

And their economy is in better shape than ours right now.

I;m Machiavellian about things. To me the end usually justifies the means.

I’m educated, not a hayseed.”

Palpatine, I get it that you're focused on only one of the three legs of the conservative triad. That's okay. We need allies where we can get them.

I don't grant your premise “You socons would rather have a third-world economy but no abortion and gay marriage.”

What I don't think a lot of libertarians understand about social conservatives is that we believe with strong family values and personal self-discipline, a third-world economy can become a first-world economy. Without those values, the strongest economies will be destroyed.

I was a secular conservative before I was converted to become an evangelical Christian, and I'm not going to yell at people when they agree with most of what I believe and in most cases will vote for my candidates in the general election, just like I'll vote for your candidate in most cases, because after the primary whichever one wins is nearly always better than the Democrat.

Take a walk into a different world, and look into our thought processes for a moment.

Consider this: Sodom and Gomorrah probably had a great economy, too. Genesis 13:10: “And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.”

Most of the time, God doesn't rain down fire on evildoers. He lets the consequences of people's sins destroy them.

For social conservatives, we generally believe that socialism is a symptom of the breakdown of personal self-discipline and families taking care of their own, looking instead to the government because we won't or can't take care of our own problems.

I'm not asking you to agree with my beliefs, but I am asking you to understand why we believe the way we do.

When all is said and done, neither economic conservatives, national defense conservatives, or social conservatives can win on our own. We all need each other.

Let's try to remember that.

Finally, I'm (mostly) ignoring your comment about education versus being a hayseed. I think with fourteen years of graduate school between me and my wife, we have some credibility when it comes to education -- lots of social conservatives are very educated people, too. I also know very well that lots of people with degrees are fools, and while I do not attack education, I don't emphasize it, either, except when I have to deal with people who seem think social conservatives are by definition uneducated.

Personally I’m doing fine. You’d be surprised how much money a concert artist makes.

I want tons more. I want to make a pile to set up a few things like a scholarship fund for deserving young pianists when I die.

Can’t do that now, not as volatile as the market is.

That 8% is a lie, its close to 18%.

Ain’t it the truth?

This man has taken up waaaaaaaaaaaay too much time. There are people with a lot of power who are actively trying to destroy our country and this jackass is babbling about an undefined principle that cannot be met by anyone.

NO one will ever be pure enough for the purists- I guess except for this guy.

Principles, my A$$.

I know, that's why I said the vast majority are employed. Whichever stat you use, that's true. Besides, I'd like to be able to win elections even when the economy is doing good. So don't poo-poo the value of having a coalition party on different issues. That's how the Democrats do it. Learn to compromise and for God's sake, see the folly in bashing people who are supposed to be your allies and whose votes you need. Unless you want the Democrats to be elected after we fix the economy and we have a good economy again.

Great point. Single mothers are one of the top constituencies of the Democrat party. Without having a spouse to support them, they naturally look to government largesse. And they specifically exist in such large numbers because the moral values and stigmas in our society have broken down to tolerate promiscuity, premarital sex, cohabitation and divorce.

This is off-topic, but I'm glad to see a conservative classical pianist at the concert performance level. To perform well with classical training requires tremendous personal self-discipline and anyone who can do that has a gift I definitely don't have — but which I can definitely admire.

You're being utterly ridiculous. Any politician running for office holds press conferences.

This man has taken up waaaaaaaaaaaay too much time.

The GOP infighting against him is what's giving the media more of an excuse to cover him. By asking him to drop out they created a will-he-or-won't-he drama that lasted all week. And now the media can continue analyzing the tension and reaction to him not dropping out. The GOP themselves blew this up into a national issue when they should have continued their campaign against the Democrats relentlessly and put all the focus on McCaskill by correctly saying she is the real problem for Missouri and the country, not one misspoken sentence by Akin.

Actually- as angry as I am with Mr. Akin- I find him instructive. I’ve discovered it’s wise to learn from the mistakes of others. I’ve been known to spout off about stuff I’m uninformed about on occasion - as did he..but thankfully I have friends and family who have called me on it:)

What I’m learning from Mr. Akin is just how terribly destructive pride can be- it can and does blind us from ALL reality and in the end provides cold comfort- as this unfortunate man will discover- whether he wins or loses this race. He is quite full of himself and his righteous indignation at this moment- but pride goeth before the fall.

The fact is that there is still no science to support the Akin “shut the whole thing down” position.

Even if women subjected to rape and a resulting pregnancy were as stressed as the experimental mice - the majority would still not miscarry.

http://www.ajog.org/article/S0002-9378(96)70141-2/abstract

Here is a link to the study I referenced. The miscarry rate was 11%. Sure zealots who want to believe the “shut the whole thing down” conjecture are going to raise doubts about the validity of the data - they would OBVIOUSLY rather believe one Dr. with a political agenda (head of the National Right to Life) who didn't actually have any data.

I repeat - there is no data to suggest that rape victims can “shut the whole thing down” - even if they live under constant stress and recrimination and post traumatic hell - the majority are not going to miscarry.

Instead of pretending that the 30,000 women who get pregnant due to rape every year do not exist via inventing or exaggerating a biological mechanisms; or concluding that if it was “legitimate rape” the stress should be enough to cause miscarriage - the correct pro life argument is that the roughly 50% of those that end up getting aborted is 15,000 innocent victims - not that they shouldn't exist or else their mothers were not the victims of “legitimate” rape.

Oh, yeah, after making the whole thing all about him and his pea-sized brain and mouth large enough to hold his foot, and having given MO to the Dems and given McCaskill the Senate seat, he’s just any old pol holding a press conference.

If we lose this election, it will be thanks to a certain jerk in Missouri.

I couldn’t be anything less than a conservative.

My first piano teacher fled Stalin’s Russia and she used to tell me horror stories......hear me? HORROR stories.

According to your definition of the word “conservative.” But today you’ve been all over the forum bashing “socons” in the most stringent terms I’ve ever seen anyone do on this forum, and explained how the country would become a “libertarian paradise” if they all disappeared off the face of the earth tomorrow.

Because in my book there’s no such thing in reality as a “social conservative”

They’re just the same old fundamentalist idiots that provoked the Scopes Trial in the 20’s.

“They’re bitter, angry. moralistic martinets who are secretly afraid that someone somewhere is having a good time.”

That’s an incredibly shallow view. There isn’t much of a dividing line between law and morality. There need to be stigmas attached to certain behaviors that are related to having a “good time” but that are actually damaging to individuals and to society. The immature person says “I want what I want when I want it” and would do long-term damage to themselves and to society because of short-term pleasure.
